Coastal erosion is particularly damaging in underrepresented communities that are unable to meet building and zoning regulations due to limited resources [Lam, 2014]. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a probabilistic assessment of hurricane-induced coastal erosion for sandy coastlines along the eastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico. However, the current USGS product incorporates an empirical equation with inputs of beach slope and deep-water wave height and period [Stockdon, 2006] to predict the wave runup. Though this is appropriate for open coast sandy beaches, it is not valid for the rocky and reef lined coasts of Puerto Rico due to their complex bathymetries, steep slopes, and large bottom roughness. To expand this tool to Puerto Rico, the USGS has created 1-dimensional XBeach [Roelvink, 2009] models around the island.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ... In this study, the mesoscale meteorological model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting), the third-generation stand-alone wave model SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore), and the coastal deformation model XBeach (eXtreme Beach behavior) are combined to calculate the short-term coastal deformation caused by high waves during the approach of Typhoon No.21 (Paolo) in 2017 to the Seisho Coast and Niigata Coast in Japan (Nishida and Shibayama, 2020). The model is then applied to predict future patterns of coastal erosion. Potential countermeasures to prevent future coastal erosion are then examined. The construction of detached breakwaters, which are currently used as a countermeasure against coastal erosion in many parts of the world, is often opposed by local residents due to the changes they can produce on the fishing environment and landscape. Therefore, it is often desirable to stabilize the beach without constructing structures offshore. Thus, gravel nourishment is proposed as a countermeasure against the short-term erosion that can be caused high waves, and its benefits and impacts were verified through numerical simulations.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ... The physics encoded into the deep neural networks are the wave energy balance equation and dispersion relation. Insights into the model capability are gained through application of the NWnets to a laboratory experiment of wave transformation over a circular shoal. If the bathymetry and discrete measurements of wave height are available, the NWnets model is capable of simulating nearshore wave transformation. Moreover, the extended NWnets can be used for depth inversion if the bathymetry is unknown. Two methods for simultaneously estimating water depths and surface waves are presented. If surface wave number and limited wave height measurements are available from remote sensing platforms, the first method employs wave numbers and scarce measurements of wave height as training data. The second method utilizes scarce wave height and limited water depth measurements as training points to reconstruct bathymetry and wave fields. The results show that both methods are capable of simultaneously mapping the bathymetry and waves when the locations of training points are appropriately distributed.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ... This type of structure can be designed to be effective, while determining a very small impact on the environment (Dai, 2018). In principle, a regular lattice of reversed pendula (i.e. the breakwater) can be seen as an approximation to a mechanical metamaterial with interesting properties related to its periodic structure. The tethered floating breakwater we are studying has been designed as a finite lattice of submerged inverse pendula. The objective is to determine the efficiency of a regular two-dimensional lattice of spherical pendula. To isolate the one-dimensional behavior, a single array of reversed cylindrical pendula anchored to the bottom and excited by long crested waves has been tested.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ... The earthquake generated a tsunami that affected a region in the Aegean Coast of Turkey from Cesme Alacati in the northwestern part to Gumuldur coast in the southeastern part. The tsunami caused a change in the sea water level, inundations, and severe damage to marine vessels and coastal structures. Especially, floating docks in Teos Marina, Seferihisar were highly damaged due to tsunami hydrodynamic forces (GEER, 2020). It was observed that the mooring chains and fairleads were broken, and the pontoons were dragged offshore. Moreover, the aluminum frames of docks and the moored ships were damaged. The literature survey shows that although the effect of tsunami-induced currents on the floating docks with pile guides is investigated (Keen et al. 2017), there is not any study that calculates damages on the floating docks with connected units and the mooring lines and the assessment of the damage due to the tsunami-induced currents using a hydrodynamic numerical model. In this study, the effect of tsunami-induced sea-level changes and currents on the floating docks of Teos Marina are investigated by numerical hydrodynamic modeling.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ... This green infrastructure includes natural habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs, shellfish reefs, saltmarshes, and seagrasses - all of which have been demonstrated to maintain shorelines, balance hydrology, buffer land from storms, improve water quality, and provide recreational and aesthetical values. Concerns arise when built infrastructure damages such beneficial habitats, as can happen if designs are inadequate or poorly planned. The result is that much of the current narrative around gray/green infrastructure has created a false and dangerous dichotomy: green infrastructure is labelled a ‘nature-based solution’, while gray infrastructure is portrayed or perceived by certain stakeholders as the opposite (sometimes implying that engineered solutions are not long-term solutions at all, but rather short-term solutions that can pose long-term problems). Coastal structures can stabilize shorelines, prevent erosion, and create space for colonization by mangroves, seagrasses, corals, and other foundational marine species. The structures themselves can contribute to improving water quality, creating the enabling conditions for ecosystem recovery.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ... In some areas the erosion rate is several meters annually, leading to significant loss of coastal barrier island area. The bulk of the coastal barrier systems in Texas is undeveloped. However, barrier island loss is no longer able to go unnoticed as there is ever-growing recognition of their intrinsic value to coastal habitat and economies and their role in coastal storm resilience. Projects with significant merit and sediment needs are being identified for funding, which could result in a firstcome- first-serve extraction of the easily available and less costly sediment resources. Without proper management, the complexity and cost of future projects will naturally escalate, leading to a reduction in investments due to lower returns. The following questions need to be addressed: how can lower returns be avoided to incentivize investment and maximize coastal restoration efforts in Texas? And what can be done to galvanize support for beneficial use (BU) placement of beach-quality dredge material to minimize its removal from the littoral system? What can be done now to inform and leverage the existing and future knowledge so that management decisions lead to better outcomes for the environment and Texas constituents? A well thought out and executed plan maximizing returns and coastal resilience will enable other regions to more easily replicate the success.","PeriodicalId":497926,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ...
