Rodríguez","doi":"10.1016/S1135-3074(10)70006-5","DOIUrl":"10.1016/S1135-3074(10)70006-5","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Background</h3><p>In the Andrés Eloy Blanco Municipality (AEBM), Lara State, malnutrition is not perceived as a public health problem, although it was the municipality where: the first case of Kwashiorkor was described, the first center for nutritional recovery was founded and the locality where the First National Conference on Nutrition in Primary Assistance took place. The Universidad Centroccidental “Lisandro Alvarado” (UCLA) develops the project “nutrition, basis of the sustainable development for the AEBM: it was creating culture for to live in health” whose aim is to reach the sustainable development of the AEBM by using the nutrition as a base for that development.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>The goals reached by the project in the promotion of the sustainable development of the municipality by the integration and participation of communities, the UCLA and other institutions in the cooperative working are presented. Chronic diseases are also among the leading causes of mortality in Venezuela. The “5aday” initiative is being promoted in the country since year 2006 by the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV). The UCV has been trying to disseminate the campaign and get support from other institutions and sectors of society interested in increasing awareness of the health benefits associated to consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as a of physical activity. This paper presents some strategies employed to promote the campaign in the country, taking advantage of opportunities offered by the existing legal framework that have enabled actions at community level. There has been also support from the area of social responsibility of companies. Serra-Majem","doi":"10.1016/S1135-3074(10)70010-7","DOIUrl":"10.1016/S1135-3074(10)70010-7","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>In community nutrition, sustainability refers to the ability of the program or intervention to continue over time in line with local and global economic, human and environmental resources.</p><p>We can differentiate the sustainability into two major conceptual areas: The sustainability of community nutrition programs, understood as autonomy and self-financing or external independence, and the sustainability of agricultural, livestock and nutritional policies with respect to the environment.</p><p>Food production exerst distinct effects on the geophysical environment, such as the degradation of species, the emission of toxins, air pollution and water consumption.</p><p>The changes in diet related to reducing animal products and increasing vegetable comsumption not only produce benefits for human health and on the overall utilization of land, but can also play a decisive role in the policies of climate change mitigation. As a result, in recent decades has driven the development of community strategies of nutritional surveillance and health promotion through healthy eating habits and giving rise to community nutrition.</p><p>The main practical functions that are developed in a community nutrition unit are to identify and assess nutritional problems of the community and to design, organize, implement, and evaluate nutrition intervention programs including occupational environment-oriented strategies, school-based interventions and programs targeted to high risk groups or to the general population. The community interventions aim to gradually adequate the nutritional pattern towards a healthier profile. Rivera-Dommarco","doi":"10.1016/S1135-3074(10)70005-3","DOIUrl":"10.1016/S1135-3074(10)70005-3","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Background</h3><p>26% of school children in Mexico are overweight or obese (OW/OB), which means a 33% increase in 7 years.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To design, implement and evaluate a strategy to modify the school environment in order to promote healthy lifestyles through physical activity and food habits to prevent OW/OB in children in public schools in Mexico city.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>Formative research to diagnose the environment and design the intervention. Evaluation by means of an experimental design in randomly selected intervention and control schools.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>School environment contributes to energy imbalance, promotes consumption of energy dense foods and beverages and limits the opportunities to practice physical activity. Strategies focused on food habits, physical activity and communication were implemented during two school years in 16 schools. The intervention reduced the offer of energy dense foods, increased the availability of fruits, vegetables and water to drink. It is developed through social projects in poor communities. This is possible through the joint institutions, organizations and companies who are committed to working with, to and from the community. The programme has several components: food and nutrition education, nutritional surveillance, participation, food security, environment, institutional coordination, and service management which are executed according to the mode of the project. The core training is the food and nutrition education. The Bengoa Foundation in nine years, has developed 16 projects in more than 80 Venezuelan communities. With one of his allies, pharmacy SAAS, for the last four years has been running a programme of education against malnutrition, which has produced six pieces of television and printed nutritional guidelines to communities. In view of the nutritional and socioeconomic facts, it constitutes a big challenge to achieve the effectiveness, sustainability and equity of the communitarian programs for Latin America.
