To assess the impact of the radiant environment on occupants in space, we develop a ray-tracing simulation, which accounts for longwave radiation. Thermal radiation shares many characteristics with visible light, and thus is highly dependent on surface geometry. Much research effort has been dedicated to characterizing the behavior of visible light in the built environment and its impact on the human experience of space. However, longwave infrared radiation’s effect on the human perception of heat is still not well characterized or understood within the design community. In order to make the embodied effect of radiant surfaces’ geometry and configuration legible, we have developed a Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT) simulation method, which is based on a ray-tracing technique. It accounts for the detailed geometry of the human body and its surrounding environment. We use a case study of a pavilion built with an envelope consisting of active cooling panels in Singapore. Using measured data for the surrounding surface temperatures in the pavilion, we explore the impact of both the active panels and the surrounding passive elements and thermal environment on a person’s radiant heat exchange in different postures. The reflectivity and emissivity values of different surfaces are taken into account, and the ray-tracing process allows for multiple-bounce simulation. The model accounts for both longwave and shortwave radiation, and the simulation results are compared with field measurements for validation. The results are expressed both numerically and as spatial radiant-heat-maps. These show a variation of up to 11°C in MRT across the space studied. Furthermore, a digital manikin is used to assess the impact of the radiant cooling panels across the human body. The results show a 10°C variation in radiant temperature perceived by different regions of the body in one position. The findings reveal a significant heterogeneity of radiant heat transfer that current analysis methods typically overlook for both architectural space and the geometry of the human body.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"3 1","pages":"1147 - 1166"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87145940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Establishing private universities and increasing the capacity of university admissions in higher education are among these policies. Although these policies can reduce the youth unemployment problem temporarily, it leads to an influx of highly educated people in the labor market in the long term. Creating job opportunities for these young people will be more difficult, which requires the extensive cooperation of universities and higher education institutions to train student entrepreneurs. Hence, in this present study, the employment of university graduates is simulated through system dynamics approach. Then using the experimental design method, sensitivity analysis and optimization of variables are performed. In the following, identifying the variables influencing the employment of university graduates, scenarios are introduced regarding dynamic universities in youth employment.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"21 1","pages":"89 - 109"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90239436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One approach that has taken a leading role in current research is scenario-based testing. For various reasons, simulation is considered to be the most practicable solution for a wide range of test scenarios. However, this is where many existing simulation systems in research reach their limits. In order to be able to integrate the widest possible range of systems to be tested into the simulation, the use of co-simulation has proven to be particularly useful. In this work, the High-Level Architecture defined in the IEEE 1516-2010 standard is specifically addressed, and a concept is developed that establishes the foundation for the feasible use of scenario-based distributed co-simulation on its basis. The main challenge identified and addressed is the resolution of the double-sided dependency between scenario and simulation models. The solution was to fully automate the generation and instantiation of the simulation environment on the basis of a scenario instance. Finally, the developed concept was implemented as a prototype, and the resulting process for its use is presented here using an example scenario. Based on the experience gained during the creation of the concept and the prototype, the next steps for future work are outlined in conclusion.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"221 1","pages":"859 - 882"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74500380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The execution of the mission is defined by a mission thread; that is the sequence of actions/processes executed by elemental systems. The domain of complex missions has been described as “wicked” because traditional military and space program-based systems engineering practices fail due to a lack of discrete phases, a dependence on context, and the non-uniqueness of a “good-enough” mission thread. Wicked problems also tend to be unstructured (non-hierarchical) with no centralized control and do not lend themselves to linear step-by-step processes. Wicked problems are inherently uncertain leading to the broader issue of trust across a mission knowledge base, and any mission level analyses. Wicked problems are also characterized and challenged by combinatoric complexity. Mission success is primarily driven by the interrelationships between systems and not just by the individual systems themselves. The success of mission engineering will require an iterative approach of modeling, simulation, and analysis resulting in a continuous reduction in uncertainty and refinement in the topology of the mission thread. OODA-based decomposition of mission threads focused on Boyd’s Orient function provides focus on system interrelationships. Trust provides decision-maker confidence in the results that has proved elusive to traditional validation approaches. The approach described in this paper is based upon using applied category theory as a basis for building mission threads, mission models, data stores, and integrating simulation ensembles.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"40 1","pages":"201 - 220"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74051887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model adopts lane-changing time to describe the net lane-changing rate, assuming that the time is approximately equal to the relaxation time of traffic flow, but infinite when the absolute value of difference of traffic density between the two lanes is lower than 1 veh/km, as it is hard for car drivers to perceive such a small difference. Based on the two-lane traffic model, a simulation platform is built to predict traffic flow on a two-lane freeway ring with a tunnel of 0.3 km length having a speed limit of 80 km/h, and free flow speeds on lane I and II equal to 120 and 100 km/h, respectively. The platform uses a third-order Runge–Kutta scheme to handle the time derivative term, and a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme to calculate numerical flux. Simulation results show that the freeway tunnel can trigger traffic shock originating at the entrance when the coming flow density is beyond a traffic density threshold that is dependent on the off-ramp flow just upstream the tunnel. The occurrence of traffic shock leads to the mean travel time through the tunnel is almost a constant when the initial density normalized by jam density is less than 0.5. When initial density is above the density threshold, generally vehicles need more fuel consumption to run through the ring road in comparison with the case without tunnel. But the situation is just the opposite for larger normalized initial density such as 0.5.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"183 1","pages":"55 - 68"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90372848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although various control strategies, such as vehicle holding, speed guidance, and signal priority, have been proposed to eliminate or alleviate bus bunching, the impact of road traffic flow on bus bunching has not been well studied. To bridge this gap, this work proposes a new mesoscopic simulation model by incorporating the lattice Boltzmann model to simulate bus bunching considering the impacts of road traffic flow. Simulation results show that by utilizing the new simulation model, different phase diagrams can be observed. Under different conditions of traffic flow-density evolution, i.e., no oscillation, single oscillation, global oscillation, and irregular oscillation, the resulting bus trajectories are significantly different. In addition, an investigation of a real-world bus line in Beijing with global positioning system (GPS)-based vehicle location data shows that some results of the model are qualitatively consistent with the actual characteristics of the bus route. It shows that the proposed new simulation model has great potential for enhancing our understanding of the impacts of road traffic flow on bus bunching.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"527 1","pages":"183 - 199"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85665626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DT focuses on connecting the virtual and physical world as an emerging strategic technology. Initially, it was implemented through mirror models of physical objects to realize the monitoring of their whole life cycle in the manufacturing area. In recent years, DT technologies have been applied in different fields, and some typical DT solutions have been proposed to solve complex system problems. In this paper, we study the problem of how to combine the DT and other emerging technologies for UAV autonomy development and supervision, aiming to propose a basic DT framework to integrate DT and UAVs as reference rules for building DT systems, which includes four parts, that is, Virtual Space, Real Space, Service Center, and Data and Model Processing Center. Based on the proposed basic DT framework, a cloud-based DT system is then further constructed in which cloud platform, 5G, and VR are integrated seamlessly. The running and implementation processes of each subsystem are introduced in detail. Multiple experiments are conducted to verify the usefulness of proposed DT system, that is, real-time system monitoring and cloud processing, VR connection, human–robot interaction through VR technology, and so on. The experimental results show that the proposed DTUAV system can be used in the interaction of virtual and physical systems, remote supervision, intelligence integration of swarm of unmanned vehicles, and so on. Conversely, climate change is bringing about an increasing number of dangerous wind events causing damage to buildings and their surroundings. These factors further complicate the already difficult field of structural wind analysis. Current methods for calculating structural wind response, such as the Eurocode, do not provide methods for unconventional building shapes or, in the case of physical wind tunnel test and in-depth computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, they are prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. Thus, wind load analysis is often relegated to late in the design process. This paper presents the development of a computational method to analyze the effect of wind on the structural behavior of a 3D building model and optimize the external geometry to reduce those effects at an early design phase. It combines CFD, finite-element analysis (FEA), and an optimization algorithm in the popular parametric design tool, Grasshopper. This allows it to be used in an early design stage for performance-based design exploration in complement to the more traditional late-stage methods outlined above. After developing the method and testing the timeliness and precision of the CFD, and FEA portions on case study buildings, the tool was able to output an optimal geometry as well as a database of improved geometric options with their corresponding performance for the wind loading.","PeriodicalId":49516,"journal":{"name":"Simulation-Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International","volume":"1 1","pages":"1133 - 1146"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90538219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
