 Materials and Methods: A total of 74 confirmed hypertensive individuals (30 males, 44 females) of 30-55 years (test subjects) and 46 (22males, 24 females) age-matched apparently healthy normotensive individuals (control) were involved in this study. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine the concentrations of bio-elements and toxic metals while spectrophotometric methods were used for the concentrations of oxidative stress biomarkers and lipid fractions.
 Results: Comparative analysis between test and control subjects showed significantly reduced concentrations of vitamins C and E, GSH, the bio-elements, HDL and Zinc/Copper ratio. Significantly elevated concentrations of the toxic metals, MDA, CHOL, TG, LDL, and VLDL, the atherogenic indices- LDL/HDL, TC/HDL, and TG/HDL as well as Cadmium/ Zinc ratio. There was indirect association between the bio-elements and atherogenic lipid fractions but a direct correlation with HDL. Also, negative correlations were observed between the heavy metals and the antioxidants biomolecules.
 Conclusion: The concentrations of the measured bio-elements, vitamins C and E, GSH and HDL were significantly lower in hypertensive individuals while the levels of heavy metals, cholesterol, TG, LDL and MDA were significantly higher.","PeriodicalId":49491,"journal":{"name":"Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health","volume":"51 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136158775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

 Study Design: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used.
 Place and Duration of Study: Nsawam Government Hospital in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana between May 15th and June 15th, 2022.
 Methodology: We applied a quantitative research method where both self-administered and interviewer-administered strategies were applied to administer a structured questionnaire. A consecutive sampling approach was used to recruit a total of 180 women who sought surgical care. Data was analyzed using STATA version 15 Software. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression analysis were applied to determine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The level of significance was accepted at P=.05 at a 95% confidence interval.
 Results: Overall, 180 women took part in the study out of the estimated sample size of 189, giving a response rate of 95.2%. The proportion of hernia among the women was 56% out of which the common types were umbilical hernia (32%) and incisional hernia (12%). The rate of utilization of hernia care was 75%. Logistic regression showed that marital status (being single) (aOR = 0.03; 95% CI = 0.002-0.20; P =.001), occupation (traders) (aOR = 0.03; 95% CI = 0.003-0.35; P = .004), and reliance on traditional healers (aOR = 0.11; 95% CI = 0.02-0.74; P = .024) were significant predictors of utilization of hernia care.
 Conclusion: The study showed a high proportion of hernia cases among women seeking surgical care. The majority of these hernias were inguinal hernia followed by umbilical and incisional hernia. The study suggests that managers at the hospital level, policymakers, and stakeholders in the health sector should ensure the provision of affordable hernia care for women such that early detection would be one of the key strategies to prevent imminent complications or limitations to daily activity.","PeriodicalId":49491,"journal":{"name":"Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135351674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inverted papillomas have three unique features that distinguishes them from other sinonasal tumors including; a propensity for local destructive growth, a high rate of recurrence and risk of malignant transformation. The reported yearly incidence is about 0.6 to 1.5 cases per 100,000 people per year and they usually account for 0.5% to 4% of all nasal tumors. They occur at the following locations; both lateral nasal walls, ethmoidal cells, maxillary sinus, the frontal sinus, sphenoid sinuses and the nasal septum in decreasing order. It occurs most commonly in the fifth and sixth decades of life with a male-to-female ratio of 2-3:1. Inverted papilloma can arise from the entire Schneiderian membrane and molecular genetics have confirmed that it is an actual neoplasm that arises from a single progenitor cell. Most cases are diagnosed from clinical history and thorough physical examination. However, complete removal of all affected tissue with thorough histopathological evaluation is recommended to ensure a correct diagnosis. While there is yet no established pathognomonic histopathological feature to predict recurrence with all certainty, there is ongoing investigation for predictive markers of recurrence. Smoking seems to be a recognized risk factor for developing multiple recurrences and there is evidence that the presence of HPV serotypes 16 and 18 could be predictive of malignant transformation. The main aim of treatment is to achieve compete surgical resection and to prevent recurrence and malignant transformation. A period of clinical follow up is recommended after treatment. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive and updated overview of the clinical presentation, diagnosis, management and prognosis of this unique lesion.","PeriodicalId":49491,"journal":{"name":"Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136280342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
