One of these was based on a 1/100th scale model of the Herald of Free Enterprise ferry. The other models were modified versions of the Herald of Free Enterprise which were so modified that they did not decrease the efficient concept of the throughput of a conventional vessel. One modified model had nine longitudinal compartments, while another had six longitudinal compartments; these vessels should meet SOLAS90+50 regulations. The RO/RO ferry models with nine and six compartments had considerably better damage stability characteristics than the conventional model. The experiments were carried out on all models without the consideration of waves and wind. Small weights were placed on the model ferries, to represent motor vehicles, and water was added on the car deck. Measurements of the resulting heel angles were taken. All results were plotted on graphs and they were compared and discussed. The effect of cargo shift on the transverse damage stability of these vessels was found to be significant. The paper also contains a brief history of a few very important RO/RO ferry accidents that have taken place since the end of the Second World War.","PeriodicalId":49310,"journal":{"name":"Marine Technology and Sname News","volume":"2007 1","pages":"20-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78578830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fixed guide vane (or propeller/stator) type of propulsor, with its modest amount of efficiency improvement, has been recognized as one of the least complicated and robust unconventional energy saving devices among others. Thus, the paper presents a design methodology for this type of device and illustrates its successful application to a SWATH fishing vessel. The design methodology involves a three-dimensional model to predict the wake velocities around the axisymmetric SWATH lower hulls and an advanced lifting line procedure, which includes the deformation of the propeller's slipstream for the theoretical modeling of the stator and the propeller. The design application is carried out for a middle distance water SWATH fishing platform, and efficiency gain due to the use of the stator is presented over a conventional screw propulsion system. The sensitivity of the stator design, with respect to main design parameters, which are the number of stator blades and the distance of the stator from the propeller, are investigated in addition to the advantages of adapting the SWATH concept as a fishing platform.","PeriodicalId":49310,"journal":{"name":"Marine Technology and Sname News","volume":"151 1","pages":"233-240"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86665099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This brought the trophy, better known as the Little America's Cup, back to the United States after an eleven-year stay in Australia. The Cogito project was three years in length and encompassed the design/construction phase, initial sailing and tuning at her home, the Bristol Yacht Club in Bristol, Rhode Island, and the final training and competition at the race venue, McCrae Yacht Club on Port Philip Bay south of Melbourne, Australia. This paper will cover all phases of the project from the design through the racing.","PeriodicalId":49310,"journal":{"name":"Marine Technology and Sname News","volume":"1 1","pages":"163-184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91375715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimal and suboptimal options as far as the dimensions and steel grades are concerned are found by means of linear programming methods-the Dejikstra or Ford-Fulkerson flow algorithms. This is the most widely used diesel generator engine for marine applications within its power range. The combustion process is based on design parameters and features which enable operating and maintenance costs to be kept low even when the cheapest types of heavy fuel are used. The paper outlines how the design concept also results in very low emission figures, which will permit shipowners to observe prospective NO x regulations at no extra expense. The Uni-concept, which features the combined installation of the two-stroke low speed propulsion engine and the generating sets, sharing a common fuel system (Uni-fuel Concept), common simplified cooling water systems, starting air installation, etc., is explained. This concept enables the shipyard to select the simplest and most cost-efficient engine installation for the vessel The technology used for the unrestricted low load operation of the engine is presented, and an outline is given of the special operational conditions, and of the great electrical load fluctations that prevail, for instance during the loading and unloading of the vessel by means of its own cargo-handling equipment.","PeriodicalId":49310,"journal":{"name":"Marine Technology and Sname News","volume":"36 5 1","pages":"297-304"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82807614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
