We developed, implemented and validated a protocol for the semi–automated extraction of a set of morphometric variables of egg size and shape from digital pictures. The protocol was implemented in R language as a web app called OvometriK. After binarizing and calibrating images, this protocol uses geometric and trigonometric functions to calculate eleven egg variables. We tested calculations in several ways, assuming contour continuity or using voxel counts. Application was validated with geometric shapes and 30 manually–measured chicken eggs. Mathematical validation with spheres showed that the algorithm provided high precision diameter measures, with a correlation of 99.9 %. Average estimation error was 1.4 %. The mathematical volume estimation was underestimated by 27 %, while voxels were underestimated by only 6 %. Differences between manual egg measurements of diameters and those obtained from images was less than 3 mm (4 %). Correlation between estimated volume and measured by silica gel filling was higher than 90 % using the voxel count method. Neither inclination angle or picture resolution had significant effects on precision (3.2 % maximum difference). Measures showed high repeatability and represent a significant saving in processing time. This new protocol represents an improvement on previous programs regarding limitations of platform, accessibility and number of variables. Furthermore, its flexibility and openness means it can be adapted to other specific applications.","PeriodicalId":49107,"journal":{"name":"Animal Biodiversity and Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48730423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

El uso correcto del nombre comun es importante para la conservacion y gestion de las especies clave o emblematicas. En las publicaciones cientificas en ingles es muy frecuente denominar “Spanish ibex” a Capra pyrenaica y algunos autores defienden la idoneidad de esta opcion,pero en nuestra opinion no es el mejor termino para designar a esta especie. En este articulo proponemos el termino “Iberian wild goat” y revisamos la etimologia, la historia, la taxonomia y el uso del publico en general de los nombres usados para designar a las cabras (domesticas y salvajes) en el sudoeste de Europa durante los dos ultimos milenios. Utilizado por primera vez por Plinio el Viejo, el nombre “ibice” se ha aplicado en la mayor parte de los casos a la cabra salvaje de los Alpes (C. ibex) y son pocos los autores que lo aplicaron a C. pyrenaica hasta el siglo XX, cuando algunas obras influyentes extendieron su uso en las publicaciones cientificas. Los machos adultos de C. pyrenaica tienen cuernos lisos en forma de lira, que no se corresponden con el morfotipo de ibex, que tiene cuernos con nudosidades en forma de cimitarra. Aunque C. pyrenaica y C. ibex probablemente sean dos especies proximas desde el punto de vista filogenetico, sus nombres comunes no necesariamente tienen que coincidir. Los nombres comunes siguen reglas diferentes a las de los nombres cientificos. “Cabra montes” o “cabra brava” (wild goat en ingles) son los nombres comunes utilizados mayoritariamente por los autores de la peninsula iberica. Estos nombres estan profundamente arraigados en las lenguas ibericas y se han utilizado desde las primeras referencias a la especie en la Edad Media. Proponemos que se adopte el termino “Iberian wild goat” en textos juridicos y cientificos y en la interaccion con los medios de comunicacion. The matter of the correct common name is relevant to the conservation and management of conspicuous or flag species. The English name 'Spanish ibex' to designate Capra pyrenaica is extensive in the scientific literature, and some have defended its appropriateness. However, in our opinion, it is not the best term to designate this species. We propose that 'Iberian wild goat' should be used. Herein, we review the etymology, history, taxonomy and public use of the names used to designate goats (domestic and wild) in southwestern Europe during the last two millennia. Used first by Pliny the Elder, the name 'ibex' has been applied most often for the Alpine wild goat (C. ibex), and few authors applied this name to C. pyrenaica until the 20th century when some influential works extended its use in the scientific literature. Adult males of C. pyrenaica have lyre–shaped, and typically smooth horns that do not match the ibex morphotype, which ha","PeriodicalId":49107,"journal":{"name":"Animal Biodiversity and Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43987755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their quality is often measured only by their biometrical features, such as size, asymmetry or weight. Mechanic characteristics cannot normally be measured without destroying the antler and hence losing the commercial value of the trophies. Here, we studied ultrasonic velocities, density, and tensile strength across various sections of cast antlers of Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus). We found that the speed value depended on the section of the antler and the propagation direction. For antler sections, velocities were lowest for mid–beam and highest for brow tine. Results were similar for density and indirect tensile strength, probably related to differences in functionality among antler sections. Density explained most of the variability of ultrasound–speed. The time elapsed from antler shed affected density more than ultrasound speed. The indirect tensile strength showed a non–linear, decelerating relationship with ultrasound speed. We discuss the applications of ultrasound speed as a non–invasive tool to measure density and physical properties of antlers and antler sections, and their potential use as an index of quality.","PeriodicalId":49107,"journal":{"name":"Animal Biodiversity and Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42525666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used the von Bertalanffy growth model to estimate nonlinear function for length–at–age data sets. These European peripheral populations reach the highest growth rates (k of the von Bertalanffy model > 0.4 month–1) known for this species. Instantaneous mortality rates and fecundity were computed using von Bertalanffy model parameters for each population. Mortality rates found in Galician populations were 2.0–2.3 higher times than those observed in general for Gasterosteidae. Combining both mortality and fertility, different intermediate fitness optima in each population were obtained for mature females. Overall, these differences in life history compared to other studied populations of sticklebacks can be interpreted as local adaptations to a Mediterranean climate type with high degree–days. Consequently, these populations at the edges of the species’ range may have adapted to the unique environmental conditions and may be of interest in ecology and conservation.","PeriodicalId":49107,"journal":{"name":"Animal Biodiversity and Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46674816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coastal wetlands are hotspots for the conservation of biodiversity but they commonly suffer the impact of human activity because they are usually priority areas for socio–economic development. The aim of this study was to determine the role of several factors on the potential and real disturbances of human origin on waterbirds over an annual cycle, and to evaluate their impact on the waterbird community. The study was carried out at the Urdaibai estuary (Spain). Although Urdaibai is a main coastal refuge for aquatic birds in Northern Spain (a Ramsar site, Natura 2000 site, Reserve of Biosphere), it faces high levels of human–induced disturbances. We found disturbances varied across the day, week and year, with peak disturbance coinciding with hours, days and months with highest activity, mostly associated with leisure options. The impact on waterbirds varied between species and the response to such impacts was also species–specific. Disturbances were highest near the river mouth and decreased towards the upper parts of the estuary. Efforts to increase protection of waterbirds should consider reducing the disturbance in areas with the highest impact in order to increase the functional carrying capacity of the estuary for waterbirds and to create quiet feeding and resting areas, maybe by establishing reserves with restricted access.","PeriodicalId":49107,"journal":{"name":"Animal Biodiversity and Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46033355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Por lo general, la cripsis visual implica el deposito de pigmentos en el tegumento. Sin embargo, adquirir, sintetizar, movilizar y mantener los pigmentos puede ser fisiologicamente costoso. En este estudio he elaborado un modelo de optimizacion para analizar como pueden afectar los costes de la pigmentacion a la evolucion de la cripsis. El modelo proporciona una serie de predicciones que son faciles de probar empiricamente. Predice que la cripsis imperfecta deberia ser comun en la naturaleza, pero de manera que la pigmentacion fuera inferior a la necesaria para que la cripsis sea maxima. Ademas, la cripsis optima deberia estar mas cerca de la cripsis “maxima” a medida que aumenta el riesgo de depredacion o disminuye el coste de la pigmentacion. El modelo tambien predice la existencia de variacion intraespecifica en la cripsis optima, que depende de la diferencia en el riesgo de depredacion o de los costes de la pigmentacion que soportan los diferentes individuos. EnglishPredation is one of the main selective forces in nature, frequently selecting for crypsis in prey. Visual crypsis usually implies the deposition of pig -ments in the integument. However, acquisition, synthesis, mobilisation and maintenance of pigments may be physiologically costly. Here, I develop an optimisation model to analyse how pigmentation costs may affect the evolution of crypsis. The model provides a number of predictions that are easy to test empirically. It predicts that imperfect crypsis should be common in the wild, but in such a way that pigmentation is less than what is required to maximise crypsis. Moreover, optimal crypsis should be closer to “maximal” crypsis as predation risk increases and/or pigmentation costs decrease. The model predicts for intraspecific variation in optimal crypsis, depending on the difference in the predation risk or the costs of pigmentation experienced by different individuals","PeriodicalId":49107,"journal":{"name":"Animal Biodiversity and Conservation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45372105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
