This article describes the concept of critical design moments (CDMs) as a guide for designing context-sensitive and inclusive stakeholder interactions. The approach makes often implicit\u0000 processes explicit. It is rooted in the experiences of coordinating and participating in a transdisciplinary winter school in a village in Switzerland.While the importance of transdisciplinary (Td) processes as a means to address societal problems is well-established, guidance for the\u0000 intentional design of stakeholder interactions to meet specific goals, under different conditions and contexts, remains less explored. We propose the concept of critical design moments (CDMs) as a lens through which to identify key processes in the design of stakeholder interactions that affect\u0000 the relevance and impact of its outcomes. We demonstrate how an approach using CDMs can help to make explicit not only the goals of stakeholder interactions, but also how these goals might be met through the process design of specific activities orienting these interactions. The CDMs were\u0000 identified as part of the implementation of a Td winter school for early career researchers to provide them with real-world experiences of interacting with stakeholders and local residents of a community. Dafür braucht es einen Analyserahmen, der Ansätze aus verschiedenen Disziplinen integriert, um Mechanismen des Wandels systematisch zu ermitteln.\u0000 Mithilfe der embedded-agency perspective können Reallaborprozesse so konzipiert werden, dass relevante Daten integriert erhoben werden, eine Wirkungsabschätzung gewährleistet ist und auch die Vergleichbarkeit von Reallaboren unterstützt wird.The central concern\u0000 of real-world lab research is the inter- and transdisciplinary generation of socially robust transformation knowledge. Despite the fact that real-world labs explore and study fundamental mechanisms of change, there are few approaches that deal with this question from a systematic, theoretical\u0000 and methodological perspective. Concrete real-world lab projects should be able to live up to their claim as a central research mode, supporting sustainability transformations. Thus, approaches are required that foster a broader understanding of mechanisms of change in real-world labs. We\u0000 find promising approaches that describe mechanisms of change along discipline-specific analytical and empirical scales. Key challenges are to develop analytical frameworks that integrate such approaches from different disciplines, and to identify mechanisms of change in a systematic and comprehensive\u0000 way. In this article we present an embedded-agency perspective for analysing mechanisms of change in real-world labs and discuss the methodological implications.
