A Systematic Review of the Assessment of Resistance Training Behavior","authors":"Justin Kompf, Ryan Rhodes","doi":"10.1080/1091367x.2023.2258869","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/1091367x.2023.2258869","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACTThe measurement of resistance training (RT) is often based on adaptations of aerobic physical activity measures which may not contain the elements necessary to assess RT. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine what measures are used to assess RT and appraise their composition. Specifically, the inclusion of frequency, duration, intensity, the use of major muscle groups, reps, and sets. Search terms included “resistance training,” “strength training,” OR “weight training” AND “behavior” OR “participation.” Studies were evaluated based on whether RT measures assessed the key components of participation. In the 92 included studies, only one of the six components of the RT recommendations was assessed on average. This was almost exclusively frequency. Many assessments of RT were adapted from aerobic measures without rigorous validity evidence. Thirty-seven handball players performed three single-leg and double-leg DJs on a portable force plate during two sessions. Sixteen outcome measures and four sets of reliability metrics, including intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), were estimated. All outcome measures, except vertical time-to-stabilization, yielded high (0.70–0.89) to very high (0.90–0.96) interday and intraday ICCs for the single-leg and double-leg DJ tests. These results indicated that the single-leg and double-leg DJ tests can be considered reliable for short-term and long-term monitoring of collegiate handball players of both sexes. In addition, the single-leg DJ VJH calculated using these two variables differed in magnitude (mean difference in test measurements: 0.64 cm, p < .001, effect size: 0.165).
