Exposed mothers were 8% less likely to have a c-section, with no adverse health effects. We find suggestive evidence that they were more likely to return to their pre-birth employer and had higher within-firm earnings rankings in the quarter post-birth. These labor market gains fade over time. Using death records and a triple difference design, we find a 5.5% reduction in mortality for women, mostly due to a decrease in non-cardiovascular related mortality, and inconclusive evidence for men. We explore mechanisms using income and expenditure surveys and a triple difference-in-discontinuities design. Using PSID data, we find that increased exposure to the EITC in childhood reduces the likelihood of being in poverty (<100% of poverty) or near poverty (<200% of poverty) by about 5 percentage points. We also find evidence of reduced public assistance use for some populations.
