While previous research highlights key factors that shape an individual's employability and ways of getting employment, there is a paucity of research on sustainable employability. To bridge this gap, this paper adopts an integrative review methodology to assess, analyse and synthesize extant literature on sustainable employability with the main focus on its antecedents. Building on conservation of resources theory and social information processing theory, our analysis demonstrates that sustainable employability involves three key components: employability, vitality and work ability. The analysis further reveals that sustainable employability can be achieved through selected personal and social support resources. Based on these we develop an integrative sustainable employability framework proposing personal and social support resources as key antecedents of sustainable employability. Personal resources comprise career competencies, psychological capital, mindfulness, core self-evaluations and emotional intelligence. Social support resources are provided by co-workers and supervisors and exhibited as social cues. With that, we extend and contribute to the sustainable employability literature by offering avenues for future research. From a managerial perspective, this review holds important implications for individuals to enrich their working capabilities as well as organizations to employ productive individuals.
","PeriodicalId":48326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Management Reviews","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.1,"publicationDate":"2021-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/ijmr.12276","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45035401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Women enjoyed newfound freedoms (including the right for many to vote), the Jazz Age commenced, technology improved communication and transportation on a mass consumerist scale, and the economy boomed. It was a decade of breaks with tradition and modernity for the masses, in which no frills practicality, combined with the emergence of celebrity as an aspirational mirror on life, gave a sense of freedom and possibility. It also saw the advent of commercial aeroplane travel and a consequent broadening of cultural horizons.

It is easy to make comparisons between the Roaring Twenties of the 20th century and today as the world looks to recover from decades of war in the Middle East and arguably one of the worst pandemics in modern history. Once again, technology—and particularly digital technology—has played a vital role in shaping new expectations and as societies seek to ‘build back better’ we are looking at significant breaks with tradition. Ironically, air travel may be an element of daily life that is slow to (re)emerge this time around as we continue to battle with the aftershocks of Covid-19. As with the 1920s, the nostalgic buzz and excitement associated with the emergent post-Covid era camouflages many of the accompanying challenges that we now face, both in society and in academia.

IJMR, first launched in March 1999, is also entering its twenties. For most of us, this is a period in our lives of increasing maturity, a developing sense of who and what we are, with a growing confidence to pursue our goals with determination and purpose. As a new editorial team, we feel the same sense of maturity and purpose in our stewardship of this leading journal. Entering what is thus an important period both for the journal and for the management research community more widely, the Roaring Twenties of our own era, we are collectively facing a number of considerable challenges which have the potential to change the publishing landscape for some time to come.

The first of these challenges relates to the changing work environment we find ourselves in as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This global crisis has impacted the way we do research, and with this, opportunities to publish in high-impact journals. On the back of this, and with virtual working likely to become a routine part of our lives even post-lockdown, the question arises as to what it means to be ‘global’ and how, as an international journal, we can ensure that our reach truly encompasses research and readers from around the world. The second challenge relates to the arrival of Open Access publishing, and the likely knock-on effect this will have on research processes, policies and practices within business and management. There are some genuine affordances of Open Access that the academic community should actively emb","PeriodicalId":48326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Management Reviews","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.1,"publicationDate":"2021-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/ijmr.12275","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47926321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the field has grown significantly, we have witnessed an emergence of distinct streams of research within the SAP research community. Thus, it is time to take stock of this body of work to better understand the structure of the field and provide a refreshed agenda for future research. Our review is based on bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of 340 articles. As a result, we identify the following six clusters of research: praxis, sensemaking, discourse, sociomateriality, institutional and process. Co-citation analysis shows significant disconnects between some of these clusters. Building on our review, we identify various ‘crossing strategies’ for connecting across four disconnects: (i) micro and macro; (ii) sociomaterial and discourse; (iii) critical and more mainstream; and (iv) practice and process perspectives. By harnessing diversity, these crossing strategies suggest rich agendas for future SAP research, ranging from digitalization to gender inequality.
","PeriodicalId":48326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Management Reviews","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/ijmr.12274","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45383521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this introduction to IJMR’s special issue on philanthropy, we examine the developing levels and directions of institutional philanthropy scholarship, together with the consensual and contradictory themes they exemplify and the theoretical leads to which they give rise. Modern philanthropic theory is still largely based on archetypes developed in the early 20th century that accord a central role to foundations in addressing social challenges, yet the complex health, education and social service fields within which philanthropy operates have changed dramatically. We argue for the elevation of, and deepening directions for, theoretical study of institutional philanthropy. At present, institutional philanthropy has a modest theoretical literature, at the same time as we can notice an extensive and growing grey literature in the philanthropic community, often grounded in traditional strategic management. We reflect on the grey literature's potential development into theoretical scholarship, drawing on and fusing with a broader range of academic disciplines and organizational theories, and the linked study of the field as a discourse community. This is predominantly driven by technological developments, particularly social media, and the rising level of consumer empowerment in the marketplace. A maturing stream of research has emerged assessing the effects of social media platforms on luxury brands, offerings and consumers. However, there has been no comprehensive analysis of this extant literature synthesizing the current state of knowledge and postulating future research directions. This paper addresses this gap by utilizing a systematic literature review approach. A total of 115 articles were collected and analysed and five core themes were identified, examining (1) luxury brand strategy, (2) luxury brand social media communications, (3) luxury consumer attitudes and perceptions, (4) engagement and (5) social media's influence on brand performance-related outcomes. These themes are comprehensively explored to understand the myriad impacts of social media on luxury businesses before conceptualizing the themes as a holistic framework explaining social media's role within luxury. The framework developed highlights the fragmented yet progressive nature of research on the confluence of social media and luxury, and signals fruitful avenues for further inquiry. It is proposed that scholarly attention is directed towards multiple lines of inquiry, including social media's role in luxury brand construction online, social media's role in facilitating ‘moments of luxury’, younger consumers’ luxury consumption, as well as the integration of both future innovative technological developments and novel social media platforms within luxury branding.
","PeriodicalId":48326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Management Reviews","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/ijmr.12271","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44301635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this goal, a rigorous examination of its foundational knowledge structure underpinning the construct is urgently required. Using co-citation analysis examining 151 SBE-related articles with 4038 citations over more than two decades (1994–2019), six knowledge fields deemed to have constitutive influence on SBE literature have been identified: atmospherics, product evaluation, sensory marketing, service marketing, experiential marketing and brand experience. Combining the results of a hierarchical cluster analysis and a metric multidimensional scaling analysis, the authors located three fundamental premises: (1) brand settings are arbiters of brand meaning; (2) the intrinsic processing of SBE involves the entrainment of exteroceptive and interoceptive processes; and (3) SBE outcomes are non-representational. At the end of the paper, these findings are organized into an integrative framework, highlighting research concerns and research gaps at the antecedent, processing and outcome stages. However, this research has focused primarily on extraversion, with introversion being relatively neglected. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to take stock of extraversion and introversion research in the workplace. Doing so allows us to propose a shift in focus away from extraversion to the study of introversion and its potential positive benefits. First, we briefly review the traits’ evolution during the past century and then examine 10 commonly used trait extraversion scales to better understand how extraversion and introversion are studied. Thereafter, we review 10 years of scholarship (2009–2019) appearing in 12 leading management journals. Overall, we find that there is a positive bias towards extraversion and its positively valenced characteristics such as positive affect, outgoingness and socialness. In contrast, our review reveals that introversion is treated as ‘low extraversion’ and often imbued with negatively valenced characteristics such as social awkwardness and low social self-esteem. Based on our multilevel review of the literature, we propose a working list of positively valenced characteristics of introversion and suggest how these introversion characteristics might be beneficial at multiple levels in organizations. In doing so, we hope that our paper will generate new ways of seeing introversion and extraversion alike, which should help right the balance in our shared understanding of how extraversion and introversion can positively shape workplace outcomes.
","PeriodicalId":48326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Management Reviews","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/ijmr.12268","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45451563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It offers a comprehensive review of the literature associated with a style of philanthropy that, characterized as ‘strategic’ in orientation, is accompanied by a set of goals for creating impact and adopts a public policy focus. Such approaches are grounded in the unique roles adopted by private foundations in society; alongside their nebulous place as stakeholders in the systems and services occupied by private and public agencies. Firstly, the authors undertake a comprehensive literature review in order to discern what elements of strategic philanthropy have resonance for funders operating with a public policy systems change orientation. From the findings they develop a framework for understanding strategic engagement in public systems that identifies areas of intervention where foundations have the greatest capacity for effectiveness based on their role identification in policy engagement, social innovation or convening. Understanding these three key points of intervention can be used in management and practice to inform the pathways for the adoption of goals among different stakeholders operating with diverse values, purposes and constraints.
","PeriodicalId":48326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Management Reviews","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/ijmr.12269","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47654988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
