We made use of a survey among the adult Dutch population (the LISS panel), with information on the self-assessed occupational class, education and political preferences of both partners in cohabiting heterosexual couples. Our results show that, next to the more often found effect of one’s own socio-economic status, the lower the self-assessed occupational class and educational level of the partner, the more likely one is to vote for the PVV, a Dutch populist radical right party. Whereas previous literature has shown that partner’s socio-economic status affects voting behaviour through economic policy preferences, we show the partner’s self-assessed position, for both men and women, is also relevant in explaining behaviour via other political attitudes, such as anti-immigration views. Regardless of one’s own political attitudes, the attitudes of the partner affect one’s likelihood to vote for the populist radical right. With this study, we thus show that including partner characteristics provides further insight into the role of occupation, education, gender, and political attitudes in populist radical right voting, providing evidence of the importance of people’s strong ties in voting behaviour outcomes.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"201 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138504332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We argue that material and latent deprivation can explain the effects of becoming and remaining unemployed on SWB by partnership status, as both partners and their employment status crucially shape the extent of deprivation. To test our hypothesis about partnership-specific unemployment effects on SWB and the mediating roles of latent deprivation (in terms of status loss) and material deprivation, we use 14 waves of German panel data. To identify time-varying unemployment effects, we rely on time-distributed fixed effects models. Our results suggest a strong negative and rather time-constant impact of unemployment on SWB, buffered over time for those with working or nonworking partners. Furthermore, our results indicate in particular material deprivation but also latent deprivation to be relevant mechanisms for explaining partnership-specific trajectories in the loss of SWB.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":" 1221","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135186437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on administrative register data we use sibling fixed effects models as well as a before-after-test design to investigate the shorter-term effects of parental job loss. The results show that there are hardly any effects of parental job losses on children’s exam results, while we find a reduction in the transition to the academic upper secondary track, both for maternal and paternal job losses. We find no systematic evidence that the negative effects would be larger if the job loss is followed by a longer period of unemployment or by a loss of income, and no evidence for a moderating role of parental education.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"69 S6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135544564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Applying the Gini coefficient as the main summary measure of the dispersion in the distribution at the country level, we show that heterogeneity in paternal time has been higher than that in maternal time throughout the last half-century. The gap has narrowed over the last decade, mainly due to a reduction in paternal time heterogeneity. This pattern is observed not only across countries over time but also within those countries for which we have repeated observations. We also show relevant socio-economic variations. Heterogeneity among low-educated mothers started to be systematically above that of high-educated mothers in the 1970s. In the group of fathers, heterogeneity has always been higher for the low-educated and it has been on the rise in the last decade. Results of a counterfactual analysis suggest that the main driver of the trends in paternal timne heterogeneity is the reduction in the share of fathers who do not provide any childcare, especially among the low-educated.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"11 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135874067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Health-related behaviours are central to unhealthy assimilation, and here we focus on an understudied and central part of our daily time: sleep. Building on diverse streams of literature, we conceptualize and empirically study the sleep assimilation patterns of immigrants. With data from Germany, we demonstrate that immigrants sleep significantly more than natives upon arrival, while their sleep ‘advantage’ dissipates with years spent in the host country. We also explore the heterogeneity of the sleep assimilation process by gender, education, wages, work schedules, and job physical intensity.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135976129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, we argue that cultural and economic network resources constitute an important—yet understudied—explanation for why individuals’ cultural capital yields returns in the labour market. To test our expectations, we collected unique panel data in the Netherlands with information on individuals’ cultural capital (i.e. highbrow participation), offline core, and extended networks, and occupational outcomes. In line with theoretical notions of communicating cultural match, signalling competencies, and enhancing emotional returns, our results show that cultural capital is positively associated with a higher overall occupational position. Besides, individuals’ access to network resources largely explains the association between cultural capital and a higher occupational position. Interestingly, cultural resources in the extended network play a more important role than economic network resources in the conversion of cultural capital into a higher cultural occupational position. Conversely, economic core network resources are more important than cultural core network resources in the conversion of cultural capital into a higher economic occupational position. Our study thus provides strong support for the idea that the conversion of cultural capital into occupational returns, via social capital, is field-specific.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"59 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135169060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We test a central tenet of the DPP using a choice experiment on the placement of trust in hypothetical economic transactions. According to the principle of catalyzation, the impact of implicit cultural orientations on overt behaviour should be greater if the behaviour comes about in an intuitive rather than a deliberative manner. In this study, we focus on the implicit attitudes towards class and ethnicity and measure their impact on social behaviour via estimates of the effects of corresponding attributes within the choice experiment. Using a framing technique to experimentally induce intuitive or reflective responses, we find that implicit attitudes affect the placement of trust in the intuitive framing condition but not in the reflective framing condition. Besides providing a strict test of a central tenet of the DPP in a choice-experimental set-up, our study also sheds light on different cognitive mechanisms underlying discriminatory behaviour.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"56 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135511669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study assesses the mechanisms underlying the association between subjective well-being and concerns about immigration. The analyses rely on the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (1999-2017), a long-running data set that follows individuals over time with a total of 60,319 respondents and 329,556 person-year observations. Individuals who are on average more satisfied with their income, housing situation, and life overall are less concerned about consequences stemming from immigration. The impact of changes in subjective well-being reaches beyond the influence of objective well-being; moreover, if the same individuals become less satisfied with any one of these life dimensions, their concerns about immigration increase. In turn, an increase in satisfaction is followed by a decline of immigration-based concerns. These results imply that political measures that strengthen resilience and foster coping mechanisms are critical to reducing concerns about immigration, cultivating societal integration.","PeriodicalId":48237,"journal":{"name":"European Sociological Review","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134944188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
