However, due to the limitations of painting’s ideograms, poetic painting has limitations in presenting the connotations and extensions of poetry. Qiao Zhongchang’s The Sequel to the Ode to the Red Cliff Scroll of the Northern Song Dynasty is one of the typical models of ancient poetic paintings. From the perspective of the relationship between poetry and painting, the writer analyze the intertextual and shielding phenomena therein, with a view to better understanding the constituent elements of the poetic paintings of the ancient literati and the role they played in the interpenetration of literature and art.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"25 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141801539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The Analysis of the Misuse of the Quantifier “Ge”","authors":"Wangyi Zhang","doi":"10.22158/sll.v8n3p74","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22158/sll.v8n3p74","url":null,"abstract":"This paper investigates the misuse of the quantifier “Ge” among international Chinese learners, a critical issue in Chinese language education. The problem arises from learners’ struggle to grasp the nuanced distinctions between Chinese quantifiers and those in their native languages, compounded by the vast array of synonymous quantifiers in Chinese, which complicates learning and often leads to indiscriminate application of “Ge” as a catch-all solution. This frequent misappropriation stems from mother tongue negative transfer, excessive generalization of target language rules, adverse effects of learning environments, and the impact of inappropriate learning strategies. To address these issues, this paper proposes a multi-faceted approach. Curriculum development must integrate multimedia resources and interactive exercises to facilitate multi-sensory learning. Instructional strategies should adhere to practicality, emphasizing real-life scenarios, contextualized learning, differentiated instruction catering to learners’ linguistic backgrounds, fostering positive linguistic transfer, and nurturing an error-tolerant classroom culture. Combining the teaching practice of quantifier “Ge” with ChatGPT-type artificial intelligence models can greatly enrich teaching methods, and improve teaching efficiency and learner engagement. These measures aim to counteract learners’ misconceptions, bridge the gap between linguistic systems, and ultimately enhance the acquisition of Chinese quantifiers, contributing to a more effective teaching and learning experience.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"44 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141799979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intertextuality between modern and contemporary literary creation and local chronicles is not only the inheritance of excellent traditional culture and local memory, but also the reconstruction of modern local writing. From the Xianghe Trilogy to Xianghe Chronicle and Chushui Scenery, Liu Renqian’s short, medium and long novels and essays have all been intertextualized with local chronicles. This article focuses on Liu Renqian’s depiction of the local products and customs, and explores how he inherits and reconstructs modern local writing under this reflective intertextual writing, based on the geographical and personnel divisions in the Xinghua New County Annals.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"8 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141803793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to discover their linguistic features and investigate how well they can perform in this translation. Through a corpus-based analysis, the research explores the STTR and word/ sentence length of their translations and conducts both automated and human evaluations on their translation quality. It reveals that GPT-4o exhibits higher lexical variety and both the two machine translation systems tend to produce more and shorter sentences than the human translation does. Both of them perform surprisingly well in the translation, as they get relatively high BLUE scores yet low TER scores, as well as high adequacy and fluency rates. Our evaluation results also show that Youdao AI Translate displays generally better performance than GPT-4o in the translation of Chinese-to-English literary texts, and they can complement each other to achieve even better performance, though a certain amount of errors are still present in both of their translations.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"60 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141808234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In his satirical comedies, Molière often creates sensible, vivid, contemporary, and real characters through descriptions of detailed behavior and the setting of coincident and conflicts. Harpagon, for instance, has become a global synonym for miserliness due to Molière’s extreme focus on this single character trait. Critics of his time labeled Harpagon as a “flat character”, yet it is precisely this “flatness” that makes the character memorable. Molière possessed a serious spirit of realism and a democratic tendency, using comedy as a means to educate the public. Through characters like Harpagon, he exposed the bourgeoisie’s cruelty, hypocrisy, and greedy exploitation of the lower class, delivering sharp and pungent satire. Molière’s ability to craft such characters not only entertained but also conveyed powerful social critiques, solidifying his importance in literary and social history.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":" 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141831501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many games imported from abroad in Chinese gaming market. In addition to their super-excellent quality, what is more important is that they have achieved successful game localization after entering China. The most crucial aspect of game localization is translation of game texts, and translators often need to choose different translation strategies for different types of game texts to meet the needs of the target market and audiences. By analyzing the translation texts of the popular game League of Legends, it can be found that comprehensively applying various translation methods to different game texts of the game, its translation quality can be improved, making it much easier for the target audience to accept it.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"184 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141828589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores the acquisition of bilingualism, its influence on cognition and language development as well as neurobiological implications in comparison with monolingual speech. Bilingual individuals demonstrate improved executive functioning abilities such as flexibility while exhibiting deferred decline through regularly switching between both languages spoken. Linguistic proficiency is affected by ecological factors like age at which learning began or attitudes towards multilingual states that affect usage frequency across differing environments. Although word retrieval can become an impediment for those who are bilingual; however advantages lie in increased vocabulary range alongside metalinguistic awareness gained from diverse communication scenarios. The structure of brain regions linked to processing multilinguality also correlate intrinsically during decision making. The future research direction benefits studying cross-cultural creative expression impacting effective simultaneous use .Enhancing appreciation amongst speakers via comprehension urges us further into grasping influences behind producing multicultural forms essential within our modern day society.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"9 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141354252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is found that although harmonious discourse analysis is dependent on China’s development context, it is not contextually limited and can be employed to analyze the relationship between human beings, society and nature in multimedia ecological discourse in Western contexts, proving the interpretation power of harmonic discourse analysis in non-Chinese contexts. This study broadens the application context scope of harmonious discourse analysis, enriches the methodology of harmonious discourse analysis, and provides a new perspective for the study of multimodal eco-discourse in Western countries.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"6 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140964298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper scrutinizes David Tod Roy’s English translation of Jin Ping Mei, titled “The Plum in the Golden Vase or, Chin P’ing Mei”, which adeptly captures the linguistic and cultural nuances of the original while crystalizing his extensive research through the strategy of thick translation. Through a detailed analysis of Roy’s treatment of wordplay in Jin Ping Mei, this study delves into the efficacy of thick translation as a pivotal approach in preserving and conveying the authentic rhetorical features of the novel. It is discerned that the paratextual elements within Roy’s translation play a crucial role in both the comprehension and preservation of wordplay as integral rhetorical elements of the original text. This not only ensures the readability and aesthetic appeal of the translation per se but also enhances its fidelity in conveying the linguistic and cultural authenticity of the source material.","PeriodicalId":482288,"journal":{"name":"Studies in linguistics and literature","volume":"8 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140982053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
