Despite the urgent need to increase women’s safety and wellbeing, trajectories to suicide are not well understood and few studies have tested potentially important mediators, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that could help to improve risk stratification and clinical responses. Methods This study used baseline data from a prospective cohort study (2019–2020) to examine differential effects of psychological, physical, sexual, and multiple IPV on suicidal ideation and suicide attempt and test whether pathways are mediated by PTSD. Simple random sampling – online/in-person in Australian emergency departments (EDs) – was used to survey consenting women with a recent suicide-related ED presentation. Structural equation modelling was used to test the pathways between recent and lifetime IPV, PTSD, and suicidal ideation and attempt. Results Of the 1,715 women ( M = 30.24, SD = 11.91 years) who participated, 1,012 (59%) reported lifetime IPV exposure, with 608 (35%) reporting recent victimization (< 18 months). Presence of PTSD wholly mediated the effects of psychological, physical, and sexual IPV on ideation ( p < .05). Multiple IPV was unique in its direct effects on ideation and attempt and these pathways were most consistent for recent IPV, compared with lifetime exposure ( p < .05). Conclusions Pathway analysis identified two high-risk patient-populations: Women with recent multiple IPV and those with a diagnosis of PTSD following lifetime IPV exposure. Findings can be used to improve risk prediction and clinical intervention for patients living with mortality risk from partner- and self-directed violence.","PeriodicalId":48180,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Violence","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135853263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a step toward understanding such intergenerational influences, the present study investigates whether aggression exposure in the family-of-origin is associated with negative expectancies of romantic partner interactions when facing a challenging couple discussion. Rejection sensitivity is tested as a mediator of this association, and gender was explored as a potential moderator. Method Negative expectancies were assessed before a 10-minute discussion about desired changes in the relationship in a sample of young adult dating couples. To test the theorized relationship between variables, the study employed self-report measures of parent aggression, rejection sensitivity, and negative expectancies. Results Multilevel analyses showed that exposure to family-of-origin aggression was positively associated with negative expectancies about the upcoming change discussion task, even after controlling for dating aggression within the current relationship. Additionally, rejection sensitivity mediated the association between parent aggression and negative expectancies. Gender did not moderate these associations. Conclusions Findings suggest that individuals who experience aggression in their family-of-origin are more likely to anticipate negative interactions with their dating partner during young adulthood. Results also highlight rejection sensitivity as a key mechanism of this process. Taken together, these findings help to explain why some individuals have negative expectancies as they approach difficult discussions with a romantic partner, which may be a putative link in the intergenerational continuity of aggression.","PeriodicalId":48180,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Violence","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136209290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Perpetrators use various forms of RCA such as controlling the outcome of a pregnancy, contraceptive sabotage and pregnancy coercion. Current research has focused primarily on quantitative data and health interventions, yet there is limited qualitative research on the overall experience of RCA. To address this gap, this study aimed to investigate the question: “What are women’s lived experiences of RCA?”. Methods Twenty women who had experienced RCA were recruited to participate in qualitative in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Results Three themes were developed that describe women’s lived experiences of RCA: I didn’t have a way out, where women described how their partners threatened them both with direct violence or indirectly through manipulation; I still feel guilty which centered around women’s overwhelming feelings of guilt and self blame and I don’t feel worthy, that outlined how RCA eroded women’s self-concept, particularly in relation to motherhood. Conclusions Our findings foreground the profound impacts of RCA on women’s mental health, identity and wellbeing which can linger for many years after the experience. It is vital that practitioners working with women who have experienced RCA consider these impacts and how to address and respond to them effectively.","PeriodicalId":48180,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Violence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135350694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies have revealed that most IPV is bidirectional rather than unidirectional, which can result in serious consequences for those involved. However, the impact of bidirectional violence (BV) on parenting, and more specifically on the parent-child relationship, is understudied. Thus, this study aims to understand the impact of BV on the parent-child relationship and analyze the differences in the perceptions about the quality of the parent-child relationship between parents involved in unidirectional IPV, parents involved in bidirectional IPV, and parents without IPV. Methods The sample comprised 138 participants of both sexes, aged 18 years or over, and with underage children. The study was conducted online, and data were collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Inventory of Marital Violence, and the Inventory of Parent-Child Relationship. Results Parents (male and female) involved in bidirectional IPV reported that the communication dimension was the most impacted and presented perceptions of lower quality in the relationship with their children than parents involved in unidirectional IPV perpetration. Conclusions These results suggest that individuals involved in BV might transpose the dynamics they establish in their marital relationship to their relationship with their children, resulting in less positive parent-child relationships. A new perspective on victim and perpetrator profiles emerges from this study, which should be considered regarding parenting intervention.","PeriodicalId":48180,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Violence","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135834468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
