Specifically, I illustrate how the theoretical model can serve as the starting point in framing the study, as a lens for guiding the data collection and analysis, and as the end point in explaining the integrated findings. The article is based on an explanatory sequential mixed methods study conducted with 248 teachers in Jamaican secondary schools that sought to understand how beliefs shaped their use of technology. This article contributes to mixed methods research by providing illustrations and analytical insights into the role of a theoretical model in enhancing rigor in designing and conducting mixed methods research.","PeriodicalId":47844,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mixed Methods Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2022-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49083155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A content analysis of the two sets of articles shows strong differences, with the random sample dominated by convergent designs and lower integration between the qualitative and quantitative results. This research contributes to the field of mixed methods by showing systematic differences between articles published in its flagship journal versus a broad sample of articles from outside this core set. In addition, it offers recommendations for how to reduce this disparity.","PeriodicalId":47844,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mixed Methods Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2022-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48459594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This methodological article advances a shortlist of six criteria synthesized from diverse, recent sources. The six criteria are a rationale for mixed methods; quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods questions; separate quantitative and qualitative data; a mixed method design and a diagram; integration in a joint display; and meta-inferences. The shortlist, the diverse sources of information used in developing the list, and its application in an empirical study provide essential criteria for new scholars in the field of mixed methods research.","PeriodicalId":47844,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mixed Methods Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2022-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47707695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Triangulation depends on the comparison of results from qualitative and quantitative studies that attempt to answer the same research question(s), so there are three possible outcomes: convergence, complementarity, and divergence. After reviewing each of these alternatives, I present an approach that cross-tabulates tests of hypotheses as quantitative results and themes as qualitative results, based on the extent to which those results are convergent, complementary, or divergent.","PeriodicalId":47844,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mixed Methods Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2022-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42152511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper critically assesses the potential contributions of the repertory grid technique when used in mixed methods research. After providing a background survey and description of this relatively little-known research instrument, the strengths and limitations of repertory grids are considered. This report discusses some of the ways that this technique can significantly enhance the quality of the data collected from research participants within the three core models of the mixed method design framework.","PeriodicalId":47844,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mixed Methods Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2022-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49077249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To examine this assertion, we studied the practical utility of workplace assessments in 1801 public organizations in Denmark, of which 540 chose mixed methods. We measure utility in terms of action taken as well as perceived utility. We contribute to mixed methods research by documenting higher practical utility in mixed methods. Mixed methods share with qualitative methods an association with influence from local stakeholders and employee engagement, but not the weaknesses of qualitative methods (such as lack of documentation and incompatibility with management preferences). Mixed methods may serve diverse stakeholders as a successful hybrid rather than as a unique paradigm.","PeriodicalId":47844,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mixed Methods Research","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.9,"publicationDate":"2022-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45180221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Education was the top field (n = 41, 33%) among empirical papers published in the first 10 years (2007–2016) of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (Molina-Azorin & Fetters, 2017). Educational research associations have special interest groups for mixed methods research (e.g., American Educational Research Association, European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction). This interest in mixed methods research and the wealth of available articles in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research presents a prime opportunity to collect impactful discussions about applying mixed methods research in educational contexts that can be useful not only for educational research but also for the mixed methods community. The purpose of this virtual special issue is to showcase the breadth of applications of mixed methods research in educational research published in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research as of early January 2022. The 19 articles chosen for this collection were based on education broadly defined and included both empirical and methodological articles. These studies were either based on schooling contexts (e.g., primary schools, colleges, professional development for school officials), studied educational constructs (e.g., learning processes, college recruitment and retention), or included students, teachers, or other educational officials as participants. Special attention was paid to select articles from the breadth of education subfields (e.g., higher education, educational psychology, teacher preparation, educational leadership). Articles included in previous virtual special issues were excluded. The goal of this editorial is to identify common practices educational researchers have used when applying mixed methods research among the articles chosen for this virtual special issue. These articles are organized into three thematic areas based on their common practices. When applying mixed methods research approaches, educational researchers: (1) align their research study design features with specific educational contexts, (2) apply unique forms of integration to merge or transform data, and (3) use visuals throughout the mixed methods research process.
