This study aims to reveal tourists’ perception of red tourism through the lens of destination image.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000This study collected 9,819 user-generated photographs within four types of red tourism destinations (RTDs) and used a computer visual and semiotic analysis approach to conduct photograph-based cognitive and affective attributes extraction. Network analysis further visualized the co-relations between cognitive images and affective images. ANOVA analysis compared the differences of the four types of destination images.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Ten dimensions of cognitive image and eight categories of affective image of red tourism were identified. It found that monuments, statues, memorial symbols were the distinctive cognitive features, and admiration was the most dominant emotion. Heterogeneity of destination images was identified among the four types of RTDs.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study is one of the first to explore tourists’ consumption of red tourism through the lens of destination image, which reveals the inconsistencies between the officially projected images and tourists’ perceived images of red tourism. Using Plutchik’s model, it validates a series of positive and negative emotions contributing to the affective images of red tourism, which expands the findings of emotions within the extant red tourism research. Throughout this process, consumers undergo various psychologies related to verification. Specifically, they experience four positive verification psychologies: fear of missing out, anticipated emotions, status self-esteem and promotional perception. They also encounter two negative verification psychologies: psychological reactance and invasiveness. In addition, environmental factors such as the type of tourism live-streaming products and tourism destinations, along with individual trait factors like cognitive miserliness, tourism experience, autonomy, regulatory mode and impulsiveness, play significant roles in shaping verification behavior. These factors collectively influence the formation of verification behavior.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Originality/value</h3>\u0000<p>This study can provide recommendations for tourism companies to conduct marketing events following live-streaming. It is one of the earlier comprehensive studies discussing how to promote verification behavior following tourism e-commerce live-streaming. Specifically, top tourist destinations are analysed, such as Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, as well as Europe in general.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000This study adopts the panel regression approach based on the data that is provided on a daily basis, and it covers a period of nearly 14 months, starting on 24 February 2022 and ending on 15 April 2023.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The findings indicate that the European T&L sector is impacted by macroeconomic variables. Namely, the T&L sector is significantly impacted by interest rates, geopolitical risk, oil and gas, whereas inflation has a muted effect, indicating a comparatively lesser influence on the dynamics of the industry. This research contributes to existing literature by providing one of the first quantitative analyses of how macroeconomic factors impact the European T&L business in the context of a geopolitical conflict.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000A study of the Russian–Ukrainian war may be limited by a number of research constraints. The continuing nature of the conflict, the lack of communication between the parties and potential political prejudice are some of these difficulties. Any research on the Russo-Ukrainian war should be done with these limits in mind.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000Macroeconomic variables play a significant role on the T&L sector development; therefore, when designing resilience strategies, they need to be accounted for.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to analyse how macroeconomic factors affected the European T&L business using a quantitative approach. However, the existing research on business tourism is fragmented, and there are gaps in the current understanding of the subject. This study aims to identify the intellectual structures, current hotspots and research directions in the business tourism field from 1994 to 2023.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000A bibliometric visual analysis using VOSviewer was conducted to assimilate the available knowledge from 136 business tourism-related articles collected in the WoS Core Collection database between 1994 and 2023.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The results indicate that the number of business tourism-related research fluctuates, but the overall trend is gradually increasing. It synthesizes four main research themes, which are tourist behavior, destination marketing, information technology and work-family interferences of business travelers.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the first to systematically review business tourism publications over the past 29 years. Zero-order bivariate correlations among variables and linear multiple regression were conducted to predict green innovative behavior based on internal marketing, personality traits and psychological capital. Binary genetic algorithms were used to segregate the subset of predictors that would be most suitable to describe variance in the outcome.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The results showed that internal communication, incentive and reward systems, work support, work environment, openness and creative self-efficacy were the most important predictors of almost all the phases of green innovative behavior.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The research showed that a multidimensional approach in analyzing green innovative behavior is necessary as some factors can be significant or not so significant predictors. Acknowledging that innovation is a multistage process, entailing distinct activities and requiring varied individual behaviors to accomplish each task, amplifies the importance of this inquiry. Employees’ personal characteristics have direct impact on green innovative behavior in hospitality. Further, the results gave an insight into the possible mix of elements of internal marketing that can be used for boosting employees’ green innovative behavior in hospitality. The proposed model is inspired by recent studies that discuss the implementation of the SDGs agenda in tourism and on Fennell’s (2019) framework for tourism ethics.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>The study proposes a multi-level model of governance that espouses the need for a stronger supranational system that curtails the power of both governments and the private sector. Two samples were studied (2015 and 2021).</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>Tourism development does not affect the quality of employment in regions. The institutional regime of the country to which the region belongs is associated with the job quality (JQ) in the region.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Research limitations/implications</h3>\u0000<p>Only subjective indicators of employment quality are considered in the analysis.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Practical implications</h3>\u0000<p>The quality of employment is related to the institutional regime. {"title":"Developing a thriving domestic tourism sector in emerging economies: a horizon 2050 paper","authors":"Elizabeth Agyeiwaah, Bob McKercher","doi":"10.1108/tr-11-2023-0816","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/tr-11-2023-0816","url":null,"abstract":"<h3>Purpose</h3>\u0000<p>The purpose of this paper is to argue for the development of a vibrant domestic tourism sector in emerging economies as a means of moving towards a more sustainable tourism sector and achieving many of the goals outlined in the UNWTO’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p>It uses a perspective approach through a critical state-of-the-art review of selected domestic and international tourism studies.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>This paper illustrates how developing such a sector will provide a range of economic and social benefits to emerging economies and their residents, as well as lowering the per-capita tourism carbon footprint of destination areas.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Practical implications</h3>\u0000<p>This study identifies policy initiatives that can be developed to help emerging economies transition from an international tourism focus to a more balanced focus.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Social implications</h3>\u0000<p>This study indicates the social benefits of developing a domestic tourism sector in emerging economies.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Originality/value</h3>\u0000<p>It equips national tourism organisations and small and medium tourism enterprises with specific actions for the use of tourism as a prosperity tool in the pursuance of these benefits.
