Turkey is neither in the West nor in the non-West, but continues to be an active global actor in the traditional structure of the international humanitarian order. Thisliminal identity can be considered as a positive, albeit ambivalent, status reinforcing Turkey’s activism. Turkey invokes Islamic and Ottoman aspects of its identity in recipient countries through bilateral relations, while it reinforces its Western liberal dimensions through implementing traditional practices of multilateral humanitarian government. This article argues that Turkey, being suspicious and critical of traditional actors at discourse level, remains integrated into conventional and Western structure of humanitarian government. This article analyses the different constitutive elements of Turkey’s liminal identity and how Turkey operationalizes its humanitarianism.","PeriodicalId":47695,"journal":{"name":"Globalizations","volume":"20 1","pages":"1120 - 1143"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49524215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Myanmar’s solidarity art demonstrates a new version of the phenomenon, where digital transmission replaces older modes of distribution, and the artwork is displayed publicly. While artwork of this nature may be useful, it requires interrogation because of the potential for imbalance between the producer and consumer – in this case between the Global South and the Global North. In this article, I review critiques of this art and its well-intentioned siblings, humanitarianism and advocacy. I then identify three elements of Myanmar’s transnational solidarity art that mitigate concerns about potential North/South imbalances – multiple transnationalisms, collective self-representation, and resource reciprocity. This newest form of solidary art, I conclude, can play a generative role in supporting transnational human rights activism.","PeriodicalId":47695,"journal":{"name":"Globalizations","volume":"20 1","pages":"1048 - 1064"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45455663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the way popular legitimacy is understood in this literature remains limited to discursive acts, namely public discourse by state officials and political parties. We argue, instead, that growth model legitimation towards groups outside the dominant social bloc also includes material (re-)distribution measures. Furthermore, these measures may not necessarily be in line with growth requirements or with growth-model logic, and may even be counter-productive to those requirements. We demonstrate our arguments by analyzing the Israeli case, where legitimacy problems of an export-led growth model led the government to implement legitimacy-seeking policies that included the liberalization of consumer-goods imports and of credit for households and small business.","PeriodicalId":47695,"journal":{"name":"Globalizations","volume":"20 1","pages":"1032 - 1047"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46385382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organized through policies and thought practices that take ideological, economic, and cultural forms as significant to the homeland — these deglobalist agendas which accord a worldwide phenomenon since the 2010s – are implemented via a decoupling from cosmopolitan outlooks, multilateral trade deals and even cross-cultural and intercultural exchanges in media. This article wishes to theorize deglobalization to shed light on how it helps us to identify the localization of capital, tariff increases, and a new phase in cinema history: ‘the deglobal cinema phase’. I will also argue that Cloud Atlas (2012) and Okja (2017) are permutations of global cinema and films that are counterhegemonic to deglobal cinema's focus on national seclusion and deglobalization's cordoning off national from global space. Thus, global cinema’s currency and the systems it builds and critiques has presupposed a pathology of the outside, to turn film into the collective life of the planet in the face of forces that now purport the inside.","PeriodicalId":47695,"journal":{"name":"Globalizations","volume":"20 1","pages":"1014 - 1031"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45487209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores how China communicates its role to the international audience: is the role of global climate leader being increasingly seen as an appropriate one for China? From a role-theoretical perspective, it studies how China’s expectations changed during the post-Paris era 2016–2021. The article shows that China adapted its climate-leader role 2016–2020. However, a more apparent change in the role in 2021 exemplifies role learning. The article concludes that China has shifted the auxiliary role of climate leader to a more central position in its role set, reinforcing its master roles of responsible great power and leader of the developing world. Understanding China’s emerging leadership is crucial for recognizing the global variability of climate leadership conceptions, particularly in non-western contexts.","PeriodicalId":47695,"journal":{"name":"Globalizations","volume":"20 1","pages":"1065 - 1082"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49441855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A crisis in home and homeplace is thus not new for the racialised mother, it is foundational to the hetero-patriarchal modern (settler) colonial project. I do not, could never, stop here but rather I foreground ongoing Indigenous sovereignties and a political project of nurturing and revival of kinship (m)otherwise as a powerful Black axis upon which the urban might be decolonised and Indigenised in complex inter-cultural and inter-generational ways and as pluridiverse relations and relationality.","PeriodicalId":47695,"journal":{"name":"Globalizations","volume":"20 1","pages":"208 - 224"},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49283266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
