The methodology employed includes the ADF test for unit root, the Johansen Test for Co-integration, the Ordinary Least Square(OLS) Technique, and diagnostic tests like the normality test, Stability test, Granger causality test.The explanatory variables were financial deepening (FID), credit to the private sector (CPS), bank capital to asset ratio (BCAR), population growth (POP), and trade openness (TOP) while the dependent variable is the Gini coefficient (GINI) proxy for financial development. The unit root test result shows that the variables are in the same order of stationarity, they were all stationary at first difference. The Johansen Test for Co-integration shows that there is a long-run relationship between the variables in the model. The OLS results of the analysis show that financial deepening (FID) and bank capital to asset ratio (BCAR) have a negative relationship with income inequality in Nigeria with financial deepening having a significant relationship with income inequality; and bank capital to asset ratio have an insignificant relationship with inequality. The results also show that Credit to the private sector (CPS), population growth (POP), and trade openness (TOP) maintain a positive and insignificant relationship with income inequality in Nigeria. Based on the findings,the study recommends that policymakers should focus on several key strategies, capable of promoting financial deepening through initiatives like expanding banking services to underserved areas.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"28 32","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140081671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study interrogated the effect of insecurity on voter turnout in Rivers State gubernatorial elections from 1999 to 2023. The specific objectives of the study were to; examine the state of insecurity during elections and assess the impact of insecurity on the conduct of elections in Rivers State since 1999. The ‘Structural Functionalism’ theoretical framework was employed in analysing the variables (insecurity, voter turnout, and elections) contained in this work. The qualitative research design method was employed in this paper involving the use of secondary sources of data collection while graphs, charts, simple percentages and tables were used in analysing the generated data. The major research findings were that; elections in Rivers State since 1999 have been characterized by insecurity, declining level of voter turnout due to insecurity in Rivers State; and election-related insecurity is usually caused by desperate members of the political class in connivance with both the State and non-state security actors. In addressing this, the study proposed a number of recommendations including the following; establishment of election offences commission, scaling up of anti-electoral violence advocacy, de-registration of perpetuators of elections insecurity in the voters’ register, and life ban on convicts from political participation, among others.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"11 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140082036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using liberalism as a theoretical approach to capture the discourse, the paper relies on qualitative data collected from secondary sources. The study argues that political leadership and corruption are interwoven, with far-reaching implications for socio-economic development. The paper concludes that for Nigeria to experience political and socio-economic development, responsible and credible leaders must emerge to implant the act of good and selfless governance in the country through policy formulation and implementation. The study reveals that Nigeria has yet to benefit fully from the conduct of external relations since independence in 1960. This is because some of the domestic factors that determine Nigeria’s image (economy, military, demography, leadership, constitution, etc.) are not fully developed to give the nation the leverage to assert its influence at the regional level and on the global scene. It is, therefore, recommended that these factors that impede the formulation and implementation of Nigeria’s foreign policy should be looked into and resolved so that the country can benefit both from its domestic policy and foreign relations and maximize fully her potential rather than people turning the table for their benefit.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135686664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It used secondary data which were drawn from various sources including Food and Agriculture Statistical Facts, Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, and World Hunger Index. The data spanned between 1981 and 2021. Descriptive and econometric (Autoregressive Distributed Lag) methods were employed for data analysis. Findings showed that in Nigeria, exchange rate and domestic food production significantly affected food imports. Production of domestic agricultural inputs should, therefore, be encouraged through appropriate technology development. An increase in quality domestic agricultural inputs will bring about a decrease in the importation of agricultural inputs, thus reducing the influence of the exchange rate on agricultural production. Intensification of agriculture, therefore, should be encouraged more at the three levels of government through adequate and sustained support to farmers especially in the rural areas. This will increase domestic food production and will discourage food import.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135686662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theoretical frame for the work is the Social Bond Theory. The study is carried out using both quantitative and qualitative research. A descriptive research design and in-depth interviews (IDIs) are used for the study. The study area is the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The population of public secondary schools is 26, with about 16,783 senior secondary school students. The sample size is 520 senior secondary school students. The questionnaire titled \"Traditional Values and Adolescent Sexual Orientation of Secondary School Students\" is used for data collection. It has a reliability of 0.78. A median item is used to answer the research question. The benchmark of acceptance for any item is 2.5, and anything below 2.5 is rejected. The content analysis is applied to the in-depth interviews. Findings from the study revealed that adolescents might not directly support same-sex behaviour due to the traditional values in place emanating from stigma. Also, some students might get involved in same-sex practice if they are opportune to travel out of the country; this implies that the only obstacle to such practice is traditional values. A recommendation was made that parents should educate their children about sexual orientation about our traditional values from infancy until adolescence and stop seeing it as taboo.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135686666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose was to establish the extent to which it approximates the Western system. The study adopts the survey research design to randomly select ten Local Government Areas out of 31 and 15 youths from each of the Local Government Areas for the study. The Questionnaire (r=0.75) was used for data collected to establish the perception of the youths on Western and historical approaches to crime, punishment, and jungle justice. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of percentage, mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics of t-test. The findings of the study reveal that the weighted mean of 2.63 out of the 4.00 maximum obtainable scores, which is higher than the standard mean of 2.50. Also, it revealed that there was no significant difference between male and female perceptionsofWestern and historical approaches to crime, punishment, and jungle justice (t = -.411; df=148; p>0.05). Based on the findings, the study recommends that Western and historical approaches should be adopted when discussing crime, punishment, and jungle justice. The government should improve on ways to reduceand end crime in the society. Jungle justice should be discouraged and orientation programmes should be organised for people not to take laws into their own hands.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135686661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The qualitative paper, which is quantitative inapproach adopts a two-stage sampling technique for data collection and analysis. Five oil palm-producing communities were purposively selected out of which a random sample of 400 households where chosen for the study. The research instrument was a questionnaire. Out of the 400 copies of the questionnaire administered analysis was basedon 315 that were retrieved. Using profitability analysis and a linear regression model, this study showed that the average profitability ratio of oil palm production in the area was N2.71 but was statistically not significant. The most important endogenous factors determining oil palm production and profitability in the area include number of children, size of land area cultivated, number of employees and output. The study recommends, among other things, the urgent amendment of the provision of the 1978 Land Tenure Act and the allocation of more land area for agricultural purposes especially for oil palm production.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135686665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper identifies the categories of N-Power beneficiaries and the extent to which the policy influence on their economic life as well as the impediments of the N-power programme on the society. This study utilized the survey design and gather data from both the primary and secondary sources.Questionnaires were used to collect data, while key informant interview was used to complement the questionnaire.The Yamane’s formula for determining sample size was used to select 400 persons for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was adopted, where the entire target population was grouped into strata to reflect the beneficiaries of N-teach, beneficiary schools and the government officials. Data for the study were analysed using tables, figures and percentages for analysis of data. Findings reveal that the beneficiaries of N-Power programme were mostly composed of non-graduates which comprised secondary school leavers and other skill acquisition aspects followed by the N-Teach, Health strand, N-Agro and Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) strands respectively. Though the programme has improved the standard of economic life of the beneficiaries through poverty reduction, proficiency skills in ICT, financial empowerment, on-the-job experience and investment in small scale businesses, delay in payment of allowance, unpaid allowances, distance to working places and lack of supervision has been the major impediments. The study, therefore, recommends prompt and timely payment of the stipends by Federal Government, timely resolution of problems of unpaid allowances, posting of beneficiaries nearest to place of residence and teacher education for N-Teach categories as well as proper supervision.","PeriodicalId":476191,"journal":{"name":"AKSU Journal of Social Sciences","volume":"56 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135686663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
