Using ESG news data from Chinese publicly listed companies, we show that companies with political connections have significantly higher sentiment scores for ESG news than others. However, the effect arises primarily because they leverage the political power derived from these connections to interfere with media coverage rather than due to superior actual ESG performance. The effect is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises, older firms, companies with highly educated executives, and male-dominated firms. We set up a theoretical model to clarify this effect and, then, report the results of a series of lab-in-the-field experiments conducted in two communities of Bangladesh, villages in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the University of Chittagong. The participants played a trust game and a confidential die-roll game. Our experimental results show that mutual monitoring helped to increase honest behavior in both the traditional and university communities, but worked more effectively in the latter compared to the former. As predicted by our theoretical model, other-regarding preferences worked differently by significantly discouraging honest behavior among the community leaders but encouraging honest behavior among the students.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":47583,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asian Economics","volume":"97 ","pages":"Article 101875"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143312158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we explore how an international bridge between Laos and Thailand affects Laotian households. We use the change in the share of food expenditure out of total expenditure as an indicator of improved living standards via infrastructure. Our estimation results generated through difference-in-differences analysis and propensity score matching show that establishing an international bridge decreased the share of food expenditure, suggesting that the living standards of households close to the bridge improved. Our main results are robust to alternative treatment measurements. Finally, we explore the heterogeneity of treatment effects using a machine learning approach and find that, while households with younger heads are likely to benefit more from the bridge, almost all households in districts close to it can benefit.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":47583,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asian Economics","volume":"97 ","pages":"Article 101876"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143312159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address the issue of endogeneity, the System Generalized Method of Moments (SGMM) estimators are employed in empirical estimations. The initial results show that lagged foreign direct investment (FDI) directly has a detrimental effect on the progress of urbanization. However, the indirect effects offer a more detailed perspective. Through its contributions to economic growth, FDI indirectly facilitates urbanization, showing that economic development stimulated by foreign investment can drive urban expansion. Environmental regulations, meanwhile, serve a dual purpose: as a mediator, they enable FDI to promote stricter environmental standards, which subsequently encourage urbanization; as a moderator, they enhance the positive influence of FDI on urbanization. The study suggests that in addition to FDI and environmental regulations, urbanization in Vietnam is promoted by higher economic development and human capital accumulation.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":47583,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asian Economics","volume":"97 ","pages":"Article 101874"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2024-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143312162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly within the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a critical export partner for China, many firm-level partnerships exhibit short durations. Through survival analysis, we demonstrate the significant role of financing constraints in these unstable export partnerships with RCEP. Aligned with the pecking order theory of exports, financing constraints prompt firms to either reduce the number of export destinations or shift to larger economies as export partners, thereby destabilizing export partnerships with RCEP members. Moreover, our findings indicate that while traditional bank support benefits large firms in mitigating the adverse effects of financing constraints, small firms rely more on financial support from intermediaries and government subsidies. In addition to financial support, firms can maintain stable export partnerships with RCEP by diversifying export products.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":47583,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asian Economics","volume":"97 ","pages":"Article 101870"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2024-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143312163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The heterogeneity test shows that the promotion effect of robot adoption is more significant among large-scale enterprises, private enterprises, and non-high-tech enterprises. Mechanism studies show that robot adoption promotes quality upgrading of enterprises' export products mainly through channel mechanisms such as product competition, trade expansion, and first-mover advantage, and product competition involves a coexistence of \"price competition\" and \"quality competition,\" with \"quality competition\" taking the lead. We explore this relationship by analyzing the variation in housing price appreciation across different age groups and cities, utilizing individual-level data from the 2017 CMDS survey. To establish a causal relationship, we employ an instrumental variable approach. Our findings reveal a significant negative effect of increasing housing prices on social integration and settlement intentions among migrants. Furthermore, we identify several individual characteristics that can mitigate this effect. Factors such as lower housing demand, longer educational attainment, being married, female gender, and working for the government are associated with a reduced impact of housing price increases on social integration and settlement intentions. These results underscore the long-term consequences of the real estate market on city development.
