Social empathy is a construct that may have the potential to improve intergroup outcomes. Social empathy is a framework that emphasizes macro-level perspective-taking as well as contextual understanding of systemic barriers for marginalized groups. In general, multiculturally focused initiatives have seen better success for intergroup outcomes than those based on colorblind ideologies. To explore social empathy’s ability to promote positive intergroup outcomes, this study investigated the relationship between the different facets of interpersonal and social empathy and these two contrasting racial attitudes. Cross-sectional surveys were administered to two different study samples: U.S. adults (n = 475) and students enrolled in a large public university (n = 290). As hypothesized, social empathy was key in predicting both racial attitudes across both samples in multiple regression models. The aspect of social empathy known as contextual understanding of systemic barriers showed the largest effects and was negatively associated with colorblind and positively associated with multicultural attitudes. Interpersonal empathy was largely unrelated to either racial attitude. Future research should examine whether interventions aimed at increasing social empathy can improve intergroup outcomes in social service settings.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"342 - 356"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45366447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translation and adaptation of items of the Korean version of HSWSE followed the suggested process by the World Health Organization. To ensure privacy of study participants, the popular mobile messaging app for smartphones in South Korea was utilized. The two-fold strategy involved the recruitment of medical social workers working in hospital settings; a recruitment message was sent to the regional representatives of The Korean Association of Medical Social Workers, and the message was forwarded to their members. Various correlation and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted for data analysis. The evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Korean version of HSWSE indicated that it is a valid and reliable population-based and working environment-focused instrument. Study findings will enable the Korean version of HSWSE to be usefully utilized to improve the task performance of medical social workers, and evaluate the factors influencing their education and training. Study findings shed a light on the needs for developing and verifying culturally responsive instruments, and furthermore if its validity and reliability of the Korean version of HSWSE can be transferable internationally.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"333 - 341"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41947384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies conducted in South Africa have outlined the different forms of abusive care, which include disrespect, neglect as well as abandonment. Research conducted on the mistreatment have focused on matured and married women as it has been assumed that childbearing occurs after marriage. This study placed emphasis on the experiences of young women utilizing public healthcare services during childbirth. Using a qualitative method, the study aimed to shed insights into the experiences of young women utilizing public healthcare services. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 young women aged 20 to 25 years living in a South African township. The study findings were thematically analyzed. The interviews suggest that young women experienced different forms of abusive care including, disrespect, abandonment and lack of privacy. The study recommends that the healthcare system in South Africa should effectively address the causes of abusive care and take appropriate action to ensure accountability and that women receive professional and dignified childbirth experience.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"179 - 190"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45191964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to investigate the serial mediation effect of attitudes toward evidence-based practice and job autonomy in the relationship between evidence-based knowledge and service quality perception. The study is based on a sample of 1159 social workers, which comes from the China Social Work Longitudinal Study (CSWLS) 2019. Results indicate that a serial mediation path from attitudes toward evidence-based practice with job autonomy is posited to operate between evidence-based knowledge and service quality perception among social workers. These findings suggest that the government and social service organizations should collaborate to offer evidence-based courses, enhance evidence-based practice training, and improve organizational climate to promote positive service quality perceptions among Chinese social workers. Future research should delve into social workers across diverse cultures and countries and examine the effect of other factors, such as social workers’ evidence-based skills and abilities, on perceived service quality to broaden the current research.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"240 - 251"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48629393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also examined the assistance available to family carers from other informal support networks. In-depth interviews were used to gather the experiences of 18 female carers and collect the views of 20 workers of social service agencies. The study found that family support for informal carers is still relatively strong in Hong Kong, as demonstrated by various forms of assistance offered by family members, including siblings sharing caregiving duties and jointly paying for a domestic helper to provide social care for parents with dementia. Also, neighbors, property security guards, and religious organizations are addressing the daily and emergent needs of carers. Based on the findings, it is suggested that social service agencies need to give siblings advice on how to effectively share the caregiving tasks and provide dementia awareness training for neighbors, workers of religious and community organizations, and security guards of properties. Future research is advised to use a quantitative approach by having a large sample size and including carers who are taking care of family members with various health problems.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"262 - 271"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45510369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Family functions refer to a set of values practiced by the family members. This study aims to analyze the effect of family characteristics, family knowledge and participation in the Family Development Program on the functioning of families in Indonesia. This study used secondary data from the cross-sectional study “The 2019 Population, Family Planning and Family Development Program Accountability Performance Survey (SKAP)”. This study involved 69,662 families selected using a probability proportionate to size sampling, collected June-September 2019 across 34 provinces in Indonesia. The education level of the householder has the most significant impact on family functions practice among family characteristics variables (β = .106, p < .05). Family knowledge (β = .188, p < .05) and participation (β = .032, p < .05) in the Family Development Program has a significant positive effect on family functioning. These findings further reinforce the role of Family Development Program in helping families carry out their functions optimally. Thus, this study recommends further socialization of Family Development Program to promote well-functioning family.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"205 - 221"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46056496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on a sample of 857 high school students between the ages of 13–19 from Beijing, this article examines the pattern of social services provided to Chinese youth and the impact of these services on their resilience and positive or negative psychosocial adjustment (depression, delinquency, prosocial behavior). The results reveal that: (a) Chinese youth generally make very limited use of services but they report moderate satisfaction; (b) both frequency and satisfaction of service use significantly predicts resilience, and resilience significantly predicts lower depression and higher prosocial behavior; (c) resilience fully mediates the relationships between social service frequency/satisfaction and depression/prosocial behavior. The findings give support to the public health model of social services and reveal that building resilience is one mechanism that universal service contributes to youths’ psychosocial adjustment. Future research may further investigate the relationships between social services, resilience and psychosocial adjustment in other geographical areas and time periods of China, and comparative studies between China and other countries may also be useful.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"147 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47424607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a dearth of studies that investigate such relationships in the nonprofit sector and the Eastern setting. Drawing on the Job Demand-Resource Theory and the Broaden and Build Theory, this study endeavored to investigate the moderating role of psychological capital in the relationship between work engagement and turnover intention of paid employees in the nonprofit sector. Data were gathered from 423 employees employed by 30 nonprofit organizations in Palestine and were analyzed through structural equation modeling. The findings showed a substantial inverse link between work engagement and turnover intention. The study also discovered that psychological capital strengthened the negative association between work engagement and turnover intention. This study, thereby, plugs such empirical gaps within the nonprofit and positive psychology literature. Future research may incorporate job resources or strategic HRM bundles into the model to investigate how job and contextual resources may shape such relationships.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"222 - 239"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43928988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study also explored whether personality traits moderate the positive relationship between religiosity and self-regulation and between religiosity and punctuality. Using PROCESS model 4, among 734 federal university employees in the South-east Nigeria, the results of the study showed that religiosity related positively to punctuality. Consistent with our proposition, self-regulation mediated the relationship between religiosity and punctuality. Religiosity associated with self-regulation and punctuality for individuals who are low on extraversion. Religiosity was related to self-regulation and punctuality both for individuals high on agreeableness and those high on conscientiousness. Religiosity related positively to self-regulation and punctuality for individuals low on emotional stability. Religiosity related to self-regulation and punctuality for individuals low on openness to experience. These results imply that self-regulation is key to punctuality, while individuals’ personality disposition propel individuals’ punctuality to appointments. These findings have implications for improving punctuality to work and appointments among public service employees and overall service delivery. Future studies should extend the present study by comparing punctuality among private and public service employees and explore the outcomes of punctuality at work.","PeriodicalId":47419,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Social Service Research","volume":"49 1","pages":"161 - 178"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45632806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study sought to understand the lived experiences of foster parents who care for a child with complex medical needs. Using a phenomenological approach, a sample of eight foster parents were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Foster parents indicated they felt supported by their assigned workers, but many foster parents experienced problems with the workers assigned to their foster children. Findings indicate the need for increased supports and services for foster parents, and a need for children’s workers to receive more training to increase their knowledge of how to support children with disabilities, as well as their foster parents.
