One-day competitions are frequently implemented in practice, with teachers’ surveys and national evaluations showing them to be the most common activity in schools. Yet one-day provision receives surprisingly little research attention in literature and implications of the competitive nature of activities are not meaningfully explored. More generally, current evaluation approaches in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education tend to be measurement-focused, which obscures crucial differences - between students, schools and program experiences - behind reports of average effect sizes. In this study, the perspective and resources of Realist Evaluation are used to provide a holistic and comprehensive theorisation of experiences and effects in one-day competitions in secondary schools. The contribution of this approach is twofold. First, it provides a much-needed elaboration of what can happen in one-day competitions, developing foresight with which to think through how effects are generated for different students in different contexts. Second, by applying Realist Evaluation to explore a familiar enterprise and entrepreneurship activity, with regards to impact evaluation approaches, this study shows the usefulness of complementing measuring with thinking.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":"53 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141808167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the ebb and flow of emotional energy in a student-centred university incubator that employs a lean startup method. We contribute a model that illustrates the roller coaster of emotional energy experienced by the student founders during the program and highlights the key role that interactions play in de-energizing or re-energizing participants. We further examine the impact of these interactions on the participants’ emotional energy, and the significance of re-energizing interactions in the program to support the development of opportunity confidence.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":" 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141826415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We theorize that if mentees perceive their business-related values to be similar to a potential mentor’s values, they are more likely to choose this mentor, and that this relationship is moderated by different types of the potential mentor’s experiences (i.e., entrepreneurial experience, industry experience, and mentoring experience). We test our hypotheses using a metric conjoint experiment and 2,240 assessments of potential mentors by 140 entrepreneurs. Our findings reveal that mentees' perception of business-related value similarity with a potential mentor increases the likelihood of choosing this mentor. Further, higher levels of mentors’ experiences strengthen this relationship. We discuss the implications of our study for research on entrepreneurial mentoring and relational learning in the entrepreneurial context, and we provide practical insights on how the matching process in mentoring programs may be facilitated.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":"909 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140749203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A systematic literature review method was chosen as it enables to identify characteristics of extracurricular entrepreneurship and enterprise education (EEE) through synthesis of validated studies of the phenomena. Findings indicate that EEE differs from formal EE owing to the influence of voluntariness and students’ engagement in the EEE. Students’ engagement in EEE and the motivation behind their engagement will be fundamental in the understanding of why, when, whom and how students engage and the outcome of engaging. The study contributes to the EE literature by addressing how the uniqueness of voluntarily participating in EEE influences learning situations, which distinguishes EEE from formal EE. Thus, the study has implications for research regarding how EEE and different EEE activities and initiatives need to further be explored to understand the potential of learning from participation in extracurricular entrepreneurship and enterprising education. The study provides implications for practice in regard of how EEE can be organized to foster learning.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":"53 34","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140796163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To encourage considerations of design in entrepreneurship education, this paper elaborates how designing can be embedded in entrepreneurship education as a distinct composite capability to be developed. It outlines a perspective of entrepreneurial action as design, whereby activities of framing, modeling, and performing give a concrete action its entrepreneurial meaning of concerning a future venture. We discuss how the underpinning capabilities can be developed in educational settings, using principles, methods, and examples as distinct types of instructions to be deployed by entrepreneurship educators in different combinations and for different purposes. We develop the implications of our work by offering a set of design principles tailored for entrepreneurship education.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":"29 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139527057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These issues have a stagnant effect on EE. What if they all have a single root cause? What if our efforts to see what works in EE have been hampered by limitations in established scientific methods? Designed action sampling is a new scientific method that combines action research, design science, experience sampling and critical realism. Teachers co-design action-oriented step-wise experiments that are then carried out by other teachers, who reflect in written form afterwards upon effects they see. Originally conceived in EE, the method has been used mostly outside EE by around 4,000 teachers and 36,000 students to form large communities around school development, vocational education and teaching in segregated areas. We investigate what problems can be solved in EE through this innovative design-based research method. Teacher communities in EE could adopt the new method to build more active communities that co-design, share, replicate and evaluate classroom level practices. This could reverse the stagnant effect of vexing issues in EE. Achieving this through research method innovation has not previously been proposed.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":"68 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138594832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Closely related to entrepreneurship promotion are the very individuals engaging with entrepreneurship, whose belief and efforts to succeed are highly correlated with their view that they ‘have what it takes”, measured as entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE). ESE has thus become a critical factor toward understanding entrepreneurship support. However, most extant scholarship focuses on formal and university education, while little is said about incorporating entrepreneurship and ESE with technical vocational education and training (TVET) to develop entrepreneurs. This is surprising because so many micro and small businesses, particularly trades, are heavily anchored in TVET. This study compares academic and TVET post-secondary students in Trinidad and Tobago to determine the factors that enhance their ESE. Data emerged from three (3) regression models explaining how academic and TVET students’ ESE are correlated with several factors. Parents with a university degree, friends who are entrepreneurs and an extracurricular focus on entrepreneurship were vital factors that saw a positive correlation with ESE among the TVET population. In contrast, academic students are driven primarily by experiences. Full-time work experience and entrepreneurial experiences were significantly correlated with the ESE of academic students. Our work highlights that academic and TVET students’ ESE have different world views that impact education. This study demonstrates the importance of tailoring entrepreneurial learning for TVET students by linking ESE with cultural capital theory. We found that when teaching academic students entrepreneurship, more emphasis should be placed on experiential learning. Our research provides empirical findings we believe to be both unique and highly relevant to the literature of entrepreneurship education.","PeriodicalId":472238,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship education and pedagogy","volume":"179 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135342112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
