This global public health issue has both short and long term ramifications for how people work, go to school, care for families, and communicate. This paper provides a portrait of the changes and effects brought upon by the pandemic and government appeals for \"self-restraint\" (as opposed to lockdown policies in other countries). In addition, the experiences of Japanese families from the perspective of university students, looking at several aspects such as work, schooling, and relationships. The observations suggest that there are notable impacts upon the Japanese family brought upon by new living arrangements. These include increased interactions and opportunities for more frequent communication between family members. On the other hand, significant issues including financial insecurity caused by reduced or stagnant incomes, tensions between family members due to work-at-home lifestyles, exacerbate existing problems faced by Japanese families. The stress from new living arrangements in small dwellings may have further intensified gender inequality in the division of housework and carework, and become a catalyst for greater strain in relationships. This paper provides an assessment of the current changes experienced by Japanese families based on news reports and statistical data, as well as perceptions of the pandemic from Japanese university students.Résumé:COVID-19 transforme la façon dont les familles et les sociétés réagissent à cette crise de santé publique. Ce problème mondial de santé publique a des ramifications à court et à long terme sur la façon dont les gens travaillent, vont à l'école, s'occupent des familles et communiquent. Ce document fournit un portrait des changements et des effets provoqués par la pandémie et les appels du gouvernement à «l'auto-retenue» (par opposition aux politiques de verrouillage dans d'autres pays). En outre, les expériences des familles japonaises du point de vue des étudiants universitaires, en examinant plusieurs aspects tels que le travail, la scolarité et les relations. Les observations suggèrent qu'il y a des impacts notables sur la famille japonaise provoqués par de nouveaux modes de vie. Il s'agit notamment des interactions accrues et des possibilités de communication plus fréquente entre les membres de la famille. D'un autre côté, des problèmes importants, notamment l'insécurité financière causée par la baisse ou la stagnation des revenus, les tensions entre les membres de la famille en raison du mode de vie au travail, exacerbent les problèmes existants auxquels sont confrontées les familles japonaises. Le stress causé par les nouveaux modes de vie dans les petits logements peut avoir encore intensifié l'inégalité entre les sexes dans la division des tâches ménagères et des soins domestiques, et devenir un catalyseur de tensions accrues dans les relations. The objective is to explore how individuals and families are coping with their regular and new roles during the COVID-19 pandemic in general and, in particular, under the \"Stay-at-Home Directive\" (SAHD). SAHD is one of the crucial public health directives to contain the pandemic. The study examines the concepts role strain, role compartmentalization and two of the three types of health-related behaviour (preventive health behaviour and sick-role behaviour). The secondary data examined through qualitative content analysis are 75 personal interviews with individuals published in the news media. The interviews were identified using a systematic search of published news media articles around the world in FACTIVA during the period 1 January to 30 March 2020, the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings confirm the positive influence of role compartmentalization in decreasing role strain in the context of a public health crisis as families re-arrange their lives under SAHD. This influence appears stronger among healthy families (not yet infected by the virus) and among individuals who are parents.Résumé:Il s'agit d'une preuve exploratoire de l'analyse de concept des individus et des familles confrontés à la crise de santé publique de la pandémie de COVID-19 dans 16 pays à travers le monde. L'objectif est d'explorer comment les individus et les familles font face à leurs rôles habituels et nouveaux pendant la pandémie de COVID-19 en général et, en particulier, en vertu de la «Directive sur le séjour à la maison» (SAHD). SAHD est l'une des directives cruciales de santé publique pour contenir la pandémie. L'étude examine les concepts de la souche de rôle, de la compartimentation des rôles et de deux des trois types de comportement lié à la santé (comportement préventif en matière de santé et comportement malade). Les données secondaires examinées par l'analyse qualitative du contenu sont 75 entretiens personnels avec des individus publiés dans les médias. Les entretiens ont été identifiés à l'aide d'une recherche systématique d'articles de presse publiés dans le monde entier dans FACTIVA pendant la période du 1er janvier au 30 mars 2020, les trois premiers mois de la pandémie de COVID-19. Les résultats confirment l'influence positive de la compartimentation des rôles dans la diminution de la pression exercée sur les rôles dans le contexte d'une crise de santé publique à mesure que les familles réorganisent leur vie sous SAHD. Cette influence semble plus forte parmi les familles en bonne santé (pas encore infectées par le virus) et parmi les individus parents.","PeriodicalId":47212,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Family Studies","volume":"51 1","pages":"236 - 253"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2020-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49201764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing a dual approach, we illustrate the extent of various institutional support and resources for families offered by the government in tandem with social distancing measures to restrict social activities, and closure of non-essential business, and also document issues related to the economy, education, family interactions and mental well-being of families from different social backgrounds. This approach enables us to show the extent to which Singaporean families have adapted to the different economic and social stressors and how institutional support has been utilized as a catalyst to resilience. The pandemic as a force of social change demands urgent research on the social impact on and resilience of families in Singapore. Future research directions should include children's development with the interaction of family socioeconomic conditions, focus on mental well-being of all generations in the family, continuous safeguard of victims of domestic violence, empowerment, and investigations of the shifting family values. A concerted research strategy will offer the opportunity for a better understanding of the paradigm shift experienced by Singaporean families, and, to identify policy implications on strengthening the resilience of families.Résumé:À partir des déclarations gouvernementales, des communiqués de presse et des principaux reportages sur les mesures, le soutien et les problèmes sociaux liés à COVID-19, nous illustrons et examinons les défis auxquels les familles sont confrontées à Singapour pendant la pandémie. En utilisant une double approche, nous illustrons l'étendue des divers soutiens institutionnels et ressources offerts aux familles par le gouvernement en tandem avec des mesures de distanciation sociale pour restreindre les activités sociales et la fermeture d'entreprises non essentielles, et documentons également les problèmes liés à l'économie, à l'éducation, les interactions familiales et le bien-être mental des familles de milieux sociaux différents. Cette approche nous permet de montrer dans quelle mesure les familles singapouriennes se sont adaptées aux différents facteurs de stress économiques et sociaux et comment le soutien institutionnel a été utilisé comme catalyseur de la résilience. La pandémie en tant que force de changement social exige des recherches urgentes sur l'impact social et la résilience des familles à Singapour. Les futures orientations de recherche devraient inclure le développement des enfants avec l'interaction des conditions socioéconomiques familiales, se concentrer sur le bien-être mental de toutes les générations au sein de la famille, la protection continue des victimes de violence domestique, l'autonomisation et les enquêtes sur l'évolution des valeurs familiale","PeriodicalId":47212,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Family Studies","volume":"51 1","pages":"385 - 398"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2020-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3138/jcfs.51.3-4.013","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44424829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
