Although this literature is growing, it mostly focuses on whether crime changes in the city/area where a sporting event is taking place. Thus, it is unclear whether crime in a different city/state can be affected by airing a sporting event on television. The current study contributes to the literature by investigating the impact of televised professional sporting events by the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL on calls for police service in San Antonio, Texas. Specifically, this study examines whether five categories of police calls for service in San Antonio increase or decrease on days in which NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL games take place compared to days with no games. This study examines this association between March 2020 and March 2021 during which in-person sporting events were not permitted in San Antonio because of COVID-19 restrictions. Results indicate that days with particular sporting events are associated with increases in certain calls for police service, while others are associated with decreases. Our findings suggest that police departments may consider increased patrol on days that certain sporting events take place. This study draws on in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted with 37 streetworkers (SWs) in a large city in the northeastern region of the United States. As ‘street-level’ bureaucrats (SLBs; Lipsky 2010), SWs serve as liaisons between public agencies and their high-risk youth clients who need support, resources, and assistance. We find that SWs report three primary factors that influence their clients to engage in crime and violence, namely that youth are: 1) socialized into a culture of survival; 2) influenced by gangs; 3) reacting to exposure to trauma. We employ Lipsky (2010) and Anderson (1999) as our theoretical framework to further understand these findings and how they may affect SWs’ interactions with their clients. Lastly, we discuss our findings in the context of existing scholarship and present policy and program recommendations.","PeriodicalId":46770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Crime & Justice","volume":"46 1","pages":"508 - 525"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43764880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research used nine years of self-report data from high school students in Massachusetts (N = 22,120) to explore whether the effect of gang membership on delinquency was moderated over the survey period: 2001 to 2017. The dependent variables included physical fighting, weapon and gun carrying, and drug use and access. The findings suggest that the effect of gang membership on physical fighting and weapon carrying significantly weakened toward the end of the survey period, although this dissipation was not gradual or linear over the survey period. The implications of these findings are discussed with the aim of identifying future avenues of research that could be completed to further examine the role of time period on gang membership.","PeriodicalId":46770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Crime & Justice","volume":"46 1","pages":"486 - 507"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44200553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Australian context, cross-cultural replication is an uncommon and relatively scarce practice. This study provides the first detailed analysis of the Corrections Mental Health Screen (Male) in an Australian setting. Using data for a national sample of 620 male police detainees interviewed as part of the Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) program, our objective is to examine the scale’s item-level characteristics in a cross-cultural context, as well as to explore the consequences of a violation of the assumption of unidimensionality. Our results confirm that all 12 items of the CMHS-M are significantly correlated and exhibit strong internal consistency, although several items are relatively uninformative in these Australian data. The item measuring prior experience of psychiatric hospitalisation is particularly uninformative, while items which measure general psychological and antisocial traits (such as the lack of empathy, impulsivity, and interpersonal conflict) are likely to confound measurement in criminal justice settings. A two-dimensional model proves to be a superior fit and has implications for the estimation of the relationship between mental health, crime, and race.","PeriodicalId":46770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Crime & Justice","volume":"46 1","pages":"526 - 542"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45922112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore this premise by examining the roles of legitimacy and media awareness in terms of police ability to protect against the negative impacts of such publicity. Officers from a midsize police agency in California were surveyed regarding media consumption and awareness, as well as perceptions of legitimacy. These factors were examined as to their ability to influence officer responses to post-Ferguson publicity. Officer awareness of pro-policing news coverage was related to lessened impact of negative publicity, but perceptions of media unfairness and awareness of negative policing news exerted a greater, and negative, influence. Media consumption and social media use were not found to be related to the impact of post-Ferguson coverage, but more nuanced measurement is warranted to capture the full range of news and social media interaction that officers have. Perceptions that the community viewed them with less legitimacy heightened impact of negative publicity as well, consistent with findings on officer concerns related to the effect of high-profile incidents on the public.","PeriodicalId":46770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Crime & Justice","volume":"46 1","pages":"468 - 485"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44899144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
