A recent innovation may change that. Synthetic diamonds are gem-grade stones produced in a sterile lab – far from the notorious bloodied mines. The online retailers who sell these lab-grown jewels publicly disavow their mined counterparts while emphasizing their own products’ ethicality. This rhetorical strategy, which I term reverse mediation, enables industries to sublimate consumers’ guilt for their complicity in decades of grotesque consumption and offer the market a more ethical alternative to re-ignite consumers’ desire. In the era of capitalist realism, reverse mediation is an important mechanism to maintain the tacit consent of an increasingly skeptical public.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75024490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Online mental health resources may be an alternative to traditional mental health care for this population, but less is known about factors that influence immigrant mental health problems or how online technology affordances influence online mental health/therapy applications and online support communities with this population. Drawing upon minority stress theory and an affordance of health communication technology framework, the current study surveyed U.S. immigrants regarding the impact of mental health stigma and discrimination on stress and depression as well as predictors of immigrant use of online mental health/therapy applications and online mental health support communities. The study findings revealed that when controlling for number of years living in the United States, increased perceived mental health stigma was positively associated with greater perceived stress and depression. However, perceived discrimination did not predict stress or depression. Moreover, that higher perceived mental health stigma was a significant predictor of increased mental health mobile application use among immigrants, and greater weak-tie support preferences were predictive of increased online support community use. These findings are discussed alongside theoretical implications, practical considerations, limitations, and direction for future research.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91048739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While previous studies of Chinese singles are typically geared toward the country’s so-called “leftover women”, and treat singledom as pejorative or problematic, this study focuses on the emerging demographic of young urban singles and their distinctive social role in reform-era China. Based on semi-structured interviews with 18 singletons from Guangdong Province who are entering the workforce, this study provides an exploratory overview of this new generation of young Chinese singles. The interviews reveal how this emergent single culture is prompting changes in individual autonomy, interpersonal attachment, marriage, gender norms, and family dynamics in contemporary China.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84311206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theoretical framework for this research came from the three classical works by Walter Lippmann published a century ago. This study is a centennial anniversary empirically grounded reexamination of his ideas. The research found a stark contrast between the ways the American and Russian media covered the elections in the counterpart country. Consequently, it is found that at that time it is not Russian but the American media outlet acted in a way that could present a danger for democracy.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83032445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a two-step collection process through focus groups (n = 17) and individual interviews (n = 15), collegiate (or early) emerging adults discussed the relational process of catching feelings. This relational process begins when initially the person who catches feelings engages in a relational investigation of their potential new partner, relying on disclosure to cultivate their budding feelings. This relational investigation, using rumination and information seeking to reduce uncertainty, helps to bring individuals closer to their Person of Interest, hopefully culminating in mutual disclosure and connection. These findings offer insight into the conceptualization of emerging adult contemporary romantic relationships.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81579367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Kuwait, many Twitter users have posted humorous tweets about the Coronavirus to influence the public’s understanding of the pandemic and exert pressure on government to take measures to stop the spread of the disease. However, the impact of many of humorous tweets was indirect and negative, causing panic and division among social groups. An online survey was employed to examine the effects of humorous Twitter messages on understanding the pandemic, causing hatred toward others and augmenting a sense of negative emotion in society. The response of 1,031 to the survey indicated that humor increased negative emotional reactions and increased understanding of the pandemic. There was no link between Twitter humor and hatred of others. The influence of humor during times of uncertainty and crises is discussed.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89842414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants (N = 294) were randomly assigned to either report on recent lies they told or on lies told to them by others. Based on truth-default theory, it was predicted that the frequency of reports of own lies told would be positively skewed, that most lies would be told by a relatively few prolific liars, and that people would report similar reasons for lying and being lied to. A key question is, do receivers report receiving fewer lies than senders reported telling? The results show that lies reported by senders and receivers did not differ in frequency. Senders, however, consider their own lies to be less important, less wrongful, and less hurtful compared to lies received.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81932422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though most public universities re-opened their doors in the Fall of 2020, strict safety protocols changed the ways in which college students interacted with their peers, significant others, and institutions, laying the groundwork for changes to the relationship environment. 390 students currently in a dating relationship completed an online survey during the 2020–2021 academic year. Following previous research on married relationships, hypotheses predicted that engagement in transition processing communication is associated with more positive relationship qualities for dating partners. With some exceptions, results suggest that participants’ engagement in transition processing communication, as well as their perceptions of their partner’s engagement, are associated with decreases in relational uncertainty and improvements in interdependence during periods of disruption to the relationship environment.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73254648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As we confront our painful past and debate who and what to commemorate, we are (re)writing history and (re)creating realities in small towns and big cities through the Southern United States. This narrative ethnography traces the development and placement of a monument to lynching victims in a mid-size Southern city, revealing complex connections and divisions across geographic, temporal, and racial borders.","PeriodicalId":46274,"journal":{"name":"Southern Communication Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73818083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
