The first one is reference to a kind, whereby a predicate describes a property directly of a kind as in Dinosaurs are extinct . The second one is a characterizing or a generic sentence that expresses generalizations as in Cats meow . A feature of generic sentences is that they tolerate exceptions. We accept sentences such as Mosquitos carry the West Nile virus to be true although the predicated property characterizes less than 1 percent of the generic noun phrase. In this article, I propose a feature‐based account of genericity and kind reference linked to a formal semantics that articulates the features responsible for genericity and kind reference and where they are encoded. I argue that genericity and kind reference is due to the [−domain restriction] feature encoded on the (D)eterminer, the [+set] feature on the head of the Set Phrase, and the [+/−exception tolerance] feature encoded on a predicate. This feature‐based account explains why a sentence like Cats meow is tolerant of exceptions while Dinosaurs are extinct is not. My account is in line with the Borer‐Chomsky Conjecture (Baker 2008), according to which crosslinguistic parametric variation is due to differences in the features of functional heads.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135543009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research is based on the participant observation method. The case study of debates on social media, and interviews with non-public representatives of the society outline a piece of the reality related to the language issue. The comments to the posts on topical subjects, diverse situations concerned with the implementation of language rights and performance of language duties demonstrate that the key attention in discussing the further development of Ukraine is paid to the importance of the Ukrainian language and moving on it by Russian-speaking Ukrainians. The debates also deal with the relevance of Ukrainization, feasible ways of its implementation, and problems the people face аt their language shifting. The output of the recent poll at the Institute of Sociology of Kyiv organized by the Ukrainian political experts in December 2022 is analyzed. It is defined that according to the poll for Ukrainian/Russian proportion in the life of Ukrainians, a positive trend toward speaking Ukrainian or increasing the Ukrainian share in the informational space of the respondents is detected. The results of the research witnesses the substantial impact of the Russian-Ukrainian full-scale war on the language behaviour of Ukrainians – social media users. The prospects envisage an in-depth study of the language-behavioral reactions of Ukrainian society and further following the changes in its language consciousness.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135914334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The metaphorical expressions with the component “fall into” are classified according to the target sphere, and their frequency of use is determined. The research material consists of a subcorpus of Ukrainian fiction texts of the 21st century, created basing on the General Regionally Annotated Corpus of the Ukrainian language. The research methodology includes corpus-based methods, structural and semantic modelling, and quantitative/qualitative analysis. The research concludes that treating emotional concepts as containers is the way to categorize affects and emotional states. For example, REDUNDANCY, EXCITEMENT, and DELIGHT ARE CONTAINERS. Among the states, such emotional concepts as ANGER, DEPRESSION, HYSTERIA, PANIC, and INSANITY alongside with the concept HOPELESSNESS are also verbalised with the help of words denoting container. Based on quantitative frequency indicators, it was found out that the concept HOPELESSNESS is most frequently verbalized with the help of structural and semantic model FEAR – IS DEEP CONTAINER. The author also observed individual metaphorical verbalisations of the concepts FEAR, ANXIETY, HYPOCHONDRIA, MADNESS, CATATONIA, MANIA, DELUSION, and PARANOIA. It is concluded that not all of the phraseological units found in lexicographic sources have a high frequency in the subcorpus. Considering the frequency of the researched metaphorical compounds, it can be argued that dictionaries do not consistently record metaphorizations, including new ones. The quantitative data on the use of such compounds in the corpus texts provide valuable information for lexicographic practice.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135913678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to most scientists, verb forms in -чий contaminate the language because they are artificial for the Ukrainian linguistic tradition. In the article, selective analysis of the articles of scientific journals of the medical specialty for 2022 was carried out for the presence of the use of active participles in the present tense. During the research, methods of observation, analysis, comparison, classification, etc. were used. The obtained results allow us to conclude that the named units are not the same in different regions of Ukraine. The recorded units are classified according to functional and semantic indicators. The largest quantitatively are the lexical groups denoting the characteristics of treatment (methods) and the characteristics of the properties of medical preparations. Changes in the fixation of such units in dictionaries were revealed: the transition of some to the category of adjectives, the complete removal of others, and the inclusion of typical ones for the Ukrainian linguistic tradition. Analysis of the most common erroneous word usage will provide an opportunity to improve the scientific language of medicine and will contribute to the purity of the language as a whole. In this aspect, it would be promising to create a guide to replacing active adjectival compounds in the language of medicine. In the survey, the main ways of avoiding the use of active participles in the present tense are given.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"490 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135914570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The material under consideration helped us offer two prior assumptions. Firstly, the body of homilies in the specified historical period (total number – 28 units) constitutes a distinct variety of performative texts, which share a set of specific features, and which, in aggregate, make up a homiletic type of discourse. Secondly, foregrounding of finite verb in Old English sentence is a genre-dependent phenomenon that has been attested in the preaching texts and the epic poetry. In this article, the term homily (sermon) is unfolded as a discursive phenomenon that establishes a close link between preacher and congregation, and, as such, serves as a medium of communication. This type of communication involves the dynamic interdependence of participants, the constant tension and continuity of the process, which results in the consolidation of spiritual and didactic principles of believers. Linguistically, it is represented by a number of grammatical phenomena shared by the homilies in question, which include formulaic initial addresses of the preacher to the audience, numerical tautological or parallel phrases, alliterative constructions, deictic elements, etc. Anglo-Saxon priest’s “fatherly conversation” can be described in didactic and Christian dogmatic terms, the spirit and letter of which were especially relevant in the context of the old Germanic ethnic groups’ existentia at the beginning of the second millennium.","PeriodicalId":46179,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA LINGUISTICA","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135913165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
