The transition from coal to cleaner sources of energy generation can be encouraged by the administration of new technologies. Hence, the study aims to review research progress on the pyrolysis of water hyacinth as a tool for the smooth transition to low carbon and climate-resilient economy. Water hyacinth is suitable for energy recovery due to its high carbon content and heating value. The outcome shows that pyrolytic products such as liquid, char and non-condensable gas fractions are beneficial. This paper contributes to policy and research deliberations on promoting and adopting pyrolysis technology in addressing South Africa’s energy crisis and water hyacinth invasion.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"14 1","pages":"103 - 116"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81670906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They contribute to climate change mitigation through two main mechanisms: carbon storage and substitution. Norway has ambitions to strengthen the contribution of its forest sector in climate change mitigation. Ideally, the future production and use of HWPs would increasingly shift towards products with high carbon storage and substitution benefits. We collected data from the literature and, when necessary, supplemented it with our own calculations, on carbon storage and substitution factors of HWPs that seemed relevant in evaluating the climate change mitigation potential in the context of the Norwegian forest sector. There are many uncertainties in the parameters. We identified and examined in more detail some uses of wood for industrial products that offer clear substitution benefits and, in some cases, long-term carbon storage. Wood-based construction materials, textile fibres, and insulation materials are examples of such products that could have high potential in the bioeconomy transformation in Norway.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"24 1","pages":"254 - 270"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78785034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This leads to unequal assessment of indoor air quality, because there is an identifiable difference between the limit values set out in the various guidelines. And these values would be related to the results obtained during the experimental activities of the application of the specific parameters and the interpretation of their effects on human health. The aim of this IAQ guideline and IAQ certification review was to develop IAQ label for Nordic countries and to find gaps the legislation established by the Latvian government. The development of indoor air quality labels provides an opportunity to maintain and promote the optimal functionality of human physiological processes and the sustainability of the building.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"840 1","pages":"28 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76961234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of them is acoustic technology, which appears to be an innovative and non-invasive means for flame extinguishing. A highpower and long-range extinguisher was built to explore the possibility of using this environmentally friendly technology. The article includes experimental results, obtained from a laboratory stand, on the possibility of extinguishing flames using amplitude-modulated waves depending on the frequency of the acoustic wave and the distance of the flame source from the extinguisher outlet, which is a scientific novelty. The advantages and disadvantages of acoustic technology are also analysed. The paper concludes that low-frequency acoustic waves are favourable for extinguishing flames because they cause more turbulence in the flame, and thus have a higher extinguishing efficiency. The results are promising and acoustic waves may be used to successfully extinguish flames in a wide range of firefighting scenarios in the future.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135319614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Charcoal made of wood waste materials allows for improving indoor acoustical quality. Therefore, this objective of the article is to investigate the sound scattering coefficients of QRD with the perforation ratio of oak wood charcoal elements. Sound scattering coefficient calculated with the measurement of the reverberation time in the reverberation chamber. The calculation results of the scattering coefficient show the growth of scattering in the frequencies - the highest value reached 0.88 (diffuser N7 with charcoal). The effectiveness of diffusers to diffuse sound waves increases as the number of wells grows. The diffuser with 80 % charcoal elements showed a higher scattering coefficient compared to the diffuser without charcoal elements.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135783300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental responsibility and digital efficiency – Europe’s twin to a green and digital economy paves the way for SMSPs to improve innovation capacity, upgrade demanded future skills and competencies, accelerate EU policies compliant operational, environmental, digital, social and market performance. The paper deploys a multi-case study approach. Using an ecosystem approach, the paper reveals potentials and pinpoints to key short- and long-term challenges pursuant to SMSPs in the three different EU macro-regions – Baltic Sea Region, Adriatic-Ionian Sea Region and Mediterranean Sea Region along the three TEN-T Core Network Corridors Orient-East Med, North Sea-Baltic and Scandinavian-Mediterranean. Departing from the role model – Baltic Sea Region – ports of Kaunas, Klaipeda & Wismar are connected via TEN-T corridors with ports of Bari and Corfu. In this vein, knowledge, skills and best practices are transferred from the North Europe to the South and vice versa using the concepts of co-creation and servitisation. Illustrated case studies reveal how all SMSPs are capable to kick-start environmental and digital transition through co-creation and servitisation mindset in a SMSP ecosystem conceptualisation.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135799339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increasing interest in alternative biomass for heat production also increases the need to develop appropriate combustion technologies. This paper investigates studies carried out in the context of renewable energy. The main objectives of the article are to identify the trends between alternative biomass types and combustion processes and to find binding keywords between the topics mentioned. Two bibliometric methods – performance analysis and science mapping analysis – are applied to analyse scientific literature related to the specific application from the Scopus database. Performance analysis results show that the number of publications and citations on using alternative biomass in energy is increasing annually. The most significant number of publications in terms of biomass types are municipal solid waste and algae, while in terms of combustion technologies, it is about direct combustion and gasification. According to the results of scientific mapping analysis, algae has a strong link to climate change and sustainability issues.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136304603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key sectors analysed within the Green Deal is the agri-food chain, with the strategy ‘From Farm to Fork’, aiming to design a sustainable food system from production to consumption, passing through industry processing, distribution, and all the related activities. For the agricultural sector, the objectives are in line with those presented in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, from technologies and digitalization, to organic farming. Concerning the transformation and distribution phases, the Commission is promoting the technological and technical innovation, the restructuring of companies and the improvement of the quality of work. The aim of this study is to perform a Life Cycle Assessment related to one of the main products of a company in the agri-food sector in central Italy. The product analysed was durum wheat pasta. A cradle-to-gate analysis was performed, starting from the cultivation of the wheat, arriving at the final pasta product. Different transformation steps were evaluated (e.g., cleaning, grinding, compression, extrusion). The analysis was aimed to identify the most critical phases along the chain, to plan improvements in terms of efficiency of the production process, with consequent enhancement of the environmental performance.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134884657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biomethane can directly substitute fossil natural gas and be used in all energy sectors. The selection of packing material for the ex-situ biomethanation in biotrickling filter reactors can be based on the physical and chemical characterization of the carrier material. The packing material selected for biotrickling filter reactors supports hydrogenotrophic methanogenic growth and thereby increases the area for H2 mass transfer. Chemical components and melting temperature analysis of wood ash material are carried out to determine optimal parameters for producing wood ash filter material. Physical characteristics of new wood ash filter material such as volume-specific surface area (m2 m−3), the external porosity (vol. %) and bulk density (kg m−3) are carried out to compare this material with other carrier materials that have been used in biotrickling filter reactors before.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"36 1","pages":"92 - 102"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74724708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 5th Generation District Heating and Cooling (5GDHC) network is the latest DHC concept characterised by low-temperature supply, bi-directional heating network operation, decentralised energy flows, and surplus heat sharing. Unlike the 4th Generation District Heating (4GDH) technology, the 5GDHC technology switched to a consumer/prosumer-oriented perspective. The introduction of 5GDHC solutions requires high investments, an important barrier to further developing DHC systems. Therefore, a novel pricing and business model could include introducing co-owners or energy managers into the system. Three different local market business models for 5GDHC at the community level have been tested. The reverse technical and economic simulation has been used for a feasibility study to determine the resources, business models, and combinations closest to the break-even point with lower costs and higher gains for all involved stakeholders.","PeriodicalId":46053,"journal":{"name":"Environmental and Climate Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"1 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89741834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
