It focuses on the attitudes of young people towards and experiences of democracy, particularly related to active engagement in politics. Democracy has been fought for in many of these countries and, as the editors and the authors of the book argue, may need to be protected again in the future. The eleven authors who are based in these countries reflect on how young people might use their civic rights and affect the politics on both formal and informal levels. The book offers a chance to evaluate the development of democracy in a region of the world that has witnessed substantial and profound changes in democracy over the previous three decades. It focuses on young generation and their capacity to contribute to the future development of democracy in their own societies","PeriodicalId":46035,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary European Studies","volume":"51 1","pages":"1041 - 1043"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88456699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field notes, and documentation, conducted, and subsequently analyzed using the principles of Transcendental Phenomenological Analysis. After examining the most frequently repeated concepts in the interviews, the following three themes emerged: 1) labeling, 2) targeting, and 3) social pressure and psychological status. This study showed the depths of the psychological pressure, discrimination, torture, and humiliation that detained and jailed participants who were excluded from society endured. The paper ends with several recommendations for Turkey to rejoin the community of nations protecting, fulfilling, and respecting human rights.","PeriodicalId":46035,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary European Studies","volume":"144 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74905104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, the existence of populist actors within the EP means a growing challenge to political groups regarding EU values. On that matter, special emphasis should be put on the chapter from Morijn (chapter 9) and the chapter from Kantola (chapter 10). In both chapters, the authors proved disappointed with how political groups have protected EU values. In Morijn’s chapter, the author has contended that violations of EU values are, in a certain manner, protected by large and mainstream political groups. In the same line of thought, Kantola has argued that nearly one-third of MEPs oppose gender equality. However, for Kantola, the most significant was identifying an impressive number of political groups that oppose equality gender, when EP acts as one of the promoters of such values. It may well be asserted that despite ‘democratic legitimacy’ becoming an issue of the past, the challenges to the EU values may well be an issue of the future, especially considering the consequences of the pandemic and war. All in all, and as acknowledged by Ahrens, Elomäki and Kantola, all chapters could be expanded into new research with further empirical data. An idea would be particularly interesting if it included issues like cooperation and competition among political groups or the impact of COVID-19 and Ukraine’s crisis, for example. There is a need for further research regarding the challenges and new opportunities that radical right populist actors put into the EP. The authors seem to be in a particularly good position to go in-depth with such a matter.","PeriodicalId":46035,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary European Studies","volume":"81 1","pages":"577 - 579"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84203954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, it links different streams of research and presents innovative inquiries into how ten states positioned themselves in the face of the British exit and with what foreign policy ramifications. More specifically, the collection examines the different countries’ coping strategies vis-à-vis Brexit, the underlying drivers of these responses, as well as their implications for patterns of national foreign policy Europeanization. After presenting the rationale and aims of the collection, this introductory article outlines the comparative framework used by the different contributors in their country studies. It then offers an overview of the main research findings derived from the individual articles. Subsequently, it summarises the comparative findings, with all contributions pointing to significant ‘sheltering’ within the EU, while ‘hedging’ strategies receive greater visibility for the countries most directly affected by Brexit. The overall results also evince a limited Brexit impact upon the foreign policy Europeanization of the countries examined. Finally, this introduction offers a reflection on the main conceptual and empirical ‘pay-offs’ of this Special Issue, closing with some avenues for future research.","PeriodicalId":46035,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Contemporary European Studies","volume":"118 1","pages":"581 - 589"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87609639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
