Reconstructing Democracy and Citizenship Education: Lessons from Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract

This book provides a comparative study of today’s status of democracy in several countries in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly those that were once part of the Soviet Union. It focuses on the attitudes of young people towards and experiences of democracy, particularly related to active engagement in politics. Democracy has been fought for in many of these countries and, as the editors and the authors of the book argue, may need to be protected again in the future. The eleven authors who are based in these countries reflect on how young people might use their civic rights and affect the politics on both formal and informal levels. The book offers a chance to evaluate the development of democracy in a region of the world that has witnessed substantial and profound changes in democracy over the previous three decades. It focuses on young generation and their capacity to contribute to the future development of democracy in their own societies
