Expert interviews are conducted with people who have special knowledge because of their professional position. The status of the interviewer when using expert interviews brings forth certain distinct nuances due to the specific nature of the interview methodology and epistemological considerations. A renowned and senior maritime specialist or a veteran maritime professional researching the nuances of their own field encounter methodological challenges while interviewing other experts during data collection. The paper aims to examine the impact on qualitative data collected in interviews when the interviewers themselves are experts in the field of research. The concepts from the social science research from various disciplines have been examined and discussed highlighting the methodological challenges.","PeriodicalId":46009,"journal":{"name":"TransNav-International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85749385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The civilian 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard is the basis for this implementation. Higher throughput, network capacity, user density, and lower latency are the main advantages offered by 5G over Long Term Evolution (LTE) and older standards. For this reason, these advantages are increasingly recognized in critical mission and military solutions. However, the 5G technology utilization in military equipment requires a deep analysis of the 3GPP standard, especially regarding technological gaps, security, and use cases. This is particularly important in using communication equipment during armed conflicts. Such equipment must be characterized by greater security and reliability than civilian equipment. Currently, work and analyses in this area are realized by the European Defence Agency (EDA), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), Allied Command Transformation (ACT), and NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO). In the Information Systems Technology (IST) Panel of the NATO STO, the research task group (RTG) ʺ IST ‐ 187 ‐ RTG on 5G Technologies Application to NATO Operations ʺ is working on this topic. This paper presents exemplary 5G use cases in the navy. We indicate potential advantages, problems, and technological gaps that should be solved before implementing 5G technology in naval systems.","PeriodicalId":46009,"journal":{"name":"TransNav-International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73725997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

S hips sailing in waters with dense traffic flow are easy to fall into compli cated multi-ship encounter situations and have a high risk of collision. Thus, it is crucial to conduct risk analysis in such situations. In this paper, a modified collision analysis method for detecting dangerous multi-ship encounters in ports and waterwa ys is proposed. The velocity obstacle algorithm is utilized to detect encounters. The model of the elliptic ship domain was integrated into the algorithm as the criteria. The Boolean operation was also used in the multi-ship encounter. A case study is conducted to illustrate the efficacy of the improved model, and a comparison between the existing method and the formal model is also performed. The results indicate that with the integration of the ship domain, the proposed method can effectively detect the encounters of multiple ships which are dangerous to collide.","PeriodicalId":46009,"journal":{"name":"TransNav-International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134982468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the Unity 3D engine was used to simulate the navigation of a coastal tradin g vessel along predefined routes in the Baltic Sea. The SA of the helmsman, who was either Chinese or European, was assessed several times wit h the SAGAT test (Endsley, 1995b, 20-21) and compared between low and high workload conditions and between manual and autopilot navigation. High workload and automated navigation both reduced SA sign ificantly and in an additive manner. No difference was found between Chinese and European participants. In contrast to previous accident analyses of SA, we found that SA l evel 3 (projection of future states) was most strongly affected by both factors, whil e SA levels 1 (perception of relevant information) and 2 (comprehension of the current situation) suffered to a lesser extent. Further research is needed to establish spec ific relationships between types of automation on ships, types of workload, and SA pr oblems in order to design countermeasures.","PeriodicalId":46009,"journal":{"name":"TransNav-International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134982474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method had been used to identify and analyze cause and effect relationships between factors that influence the use of inl and waterway transport. The author took into account interactions between seven factors. The factors were: (1) accessibility and condition of ports, transshipment infrastructure, shipyards, and service areas, (2) operating parameters of the linear infrastr ucture (waterways and locks), (3) technical condition of the fleet, (4) human errors committed by crew, infrastructure operators, and/or decision makers, (5) climate and weather conditions (floods, droughts, wind, ice, groundwater level), (6) financing the water transport system - repairs, ongoing maintenance of infrastructure; subsidies and discounts for shipowners, (7) availability of information (e.g. navigation messages), method of data collection and distribution, communication and promotion of inland navigation. The analysis based on the DEMATEL method used the survey conducted among Polish experts in the field of inland waterway transport. The results of the analysis show that the most influencing factor is financing, and the most important cause infl uencing inland waterway transport is climate.","PeriodicalId":46009,"journal":{"name":"TransNav-International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134982479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method was implemented in the simulator of the University of São Paulo, whose computing core is named “Dyna”. The model proposed calculates restoration and friction forces between bodies and has a Momentum -Impulse based criterion to reduce numerical issues when the simulation numerical integration has large time - steps. The model was empirically evaluated at the simulator by deck officers, in real-time simulations with pilots and tugmasters. We also ran simulations of that model to compare its performance under different integration time-steps lengths.","PeriodicalId":46009,"journal":{"name":"TransNav-International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134982649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
