Brief daily surveys were collected for 10 days from 94 RCC attendees from semi-rural, industrial towns. Participants reported at the end of each day whether they had visited their RCC on that day, how long they spent there, and which of nine activities they participated in while at the RCC. Accessed activities included attending recovery meetings, such as mutual support 12-step meetings, socializing, and volunteering. RCCs were visited on 30.9% of reported days. The modal amount of time spent at the RCCs was 1-2 hours and the most frequently endorsed activity was attending recovery meetings. There was a wide range of intraclass correlation coefficients for activity endorsement (.24 - .96), and for the percentage of participants who endorsed each activity (6.8% - 69.3%), suggesting that RCCs facilitate individuals' participation in the activities they most need and provide the flexibility to visit and participate in activities on days that attendees may need additional support.
","PeriodicalId":45949,"journal":{"name":"Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly","volume":"43 1","pages":"3-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11844811/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143484511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study's purpose was to assess patterns of AUD symptoms and heavy drinking in a heterogeneous national sample, in order to clarify the utility of the definition. Participants who self-reported having resolved an alcohol problem for at least six months were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk (N=386) and surveyed about their problem severity, current drinking, and AUD symptomology. We used latent class analysis to discern meaningful clusters of AUD symptoms and heavy drinking, as well as factors associated with class membership. A two-class model was the best fit for the data. The first class, which we termed Less Symptomatic, included 83.4% of the sample. Individuals in this class were unlikely to endorse of any of the 10 AUD criteria (<2.5% of the time) and 24.3% reported heavy drinking. In the second class (16.6% of the sample), termed Symptomatic, 45% of respondents endorsed at least one AUD criterion and 88.2% reported heavy drinking. These findings suggest that some individuals in recovery may continue to drink heavily with minimal problems, while others continue to experience AUD symptoms.
","PeriodicalId":45949,"journal":{"name":"Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly","volume":"42 4","pages":"379-392"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11567663/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142648549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patient compliance and efficacy in the broader population are major hurdles for current AUD medications. As a consequence, there is an urgent need for improved pharmacotherapeutics to complement behavioral approaches. Here, we report pilot testing of a minocycline analog, 10-butylether minocycline (BEM, 10 mg/kg p.o.), in two female minipigs with free-choice drinking to intoxication for nearly two and a half years. Each pig met DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis of severe AUD, and BEM reduced both alcohol intake and preference. BEM is currently undergoing testing for approval as an Investigational New Drug by the FDA for AUD treatment.
","PeriodicalId":45949,"journal":{"name":"Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly","volume":"42 4","pages":"393-403"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11463722/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142394153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
