Through our work of preparing pre-service elementary teachers to teach about race and racial injustice, we wondered if some content might be better developed using a specialized or alternative lesson model. We recognized that when faced with content as rich and complex as that related to racial justice, teachers may need to take a different approach, making more time to return to and reflect on key concepts. In this article, we discuss our work in preparing future teachers to approach complex conversations about race through picture books, vocabulary instruction, and thoughtful discussion. We discuss a Backstitched Lesson Model that enables teachers to revisit key vocabulary and to offer new and different perspectives about key ideas within one lesson. This creates opportunity for students to deepen and strengthen their understanding of both the vocabulary and the complexity of the topic.","PeriodicalId":45742,"journal":{"name":"Multicultural Perspectives","volume":"24 1","pages":"36 - 43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59985235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through encouraging the youth to use their home languages, by celebrating their cultures, honoring their experiences, and fostering peer relationships, we established a sense of community and a supportive writing space. The authors offer insights into their work and implications for educators in more traditional classroom spaces as well.","PeriodicalId":45742,"journal":{"name":"Multicultural Perspectives","volume":"23 1","pages":"241 - 247"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42985989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ambiguities of our history can be seen in the swings of public sentimentality. In the movies, these swings are highlighted. Our deepest sentiments can be unexpectedly unstable. What we find in the movies can emphasize these discontinuities. West Side Story, Hamilton, In the Heights, and Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union display some interesting differences in movies about similar themes. The endurance of underlying unresolved issues of immigration and conflict are reflected in the history of popular culture. The deepest of all these issues is our unresolved problem of race.","PeriodicalId":45742,"journal":{"name":"Multicultural Perspectives","volume":"23 1","pages":"220 - 223"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48805297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A work of educational criticism, the essay takes on the school’s passive refusal to acknowledge race and racism, instead preferring empty affirmations of multicultural tolerance and diversity. Centering the experiences of the author, his partner, and his son, who identifies as mixed-race, the essay isolates three points of critique, which focus on how a school’s embedded language practices—often subtle—can foreclose engagements with race and racism, how performative kindness can be wielded by schools toward discriminatory ends, and how anti-racism avoidance among educational leaders can function to construct the existence of school racism as a family’s private burden to bear.","PeriodicalId":45742,"journal":{"name":"Multicultural Perspectives","volume":"15 3","pages":"248 - 258"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41262110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using critical case analysis, workshop participants examine recent microaggressions committed by teachers and administrators against marginalized children and pre-service teachers in P–12 schools. Tools to recognize and disrupt these microaggressions are discussed as a means to take action. Here, I describe seven of the most salient pitfalls we should all seek to avoid if we are committed to making STEM education more culturally and socially relevant. Suggestions are provided to encourage educators, researchers, and curriculum developers to distinguish and stress the importance of engaging children in STEM instead of teaching STEM to students.","PeriodicalId":45742,"journal":{"name":"Multicultural Perspectives","volume":"23 1","pages":"224 - 231"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44199590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

School readiness, as a construct, has referred to the basic skills that children need to transition to elementary school. However, there is no consensus on which basic skills students should possess when entering kindergarten, and even less for bilingual learners. In this article, we draw on interview data from 15 staff members in one urban public elementary school in the U.S. Northeast. We focus on how teachers and staff perceived their Brazilian students’ disposition in kindergarten and first grade. Most of these professionals (nine out of fifteen) were themselves of Brazilian descent, shedding light on the understudied complexities of immigrant school personnel?s positions and experiences in the multicultural landscapes of U.S. public schools.","PeriodicalId":45742,"journal":{"name":"Multicultural Perspectives","volume":"23 1","pages":"206 - 216"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48649555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
