In particular, family SMEs search for new ideas and knowledge within their closest network of relationships (e.g. customers, suppliers and competitors), whereas non-family SMEs mainly focus on broader network relationships (e.g. universities, public institutions and fair trade organizations).,This study shows that within a natural resource cluster, the types of firm do matter. In fact, family and non-family SMEs use different open innovation search strategies to innovate; hence, this research may help and assist policy makers in tailoring innovation policies aimed at expanding the potential benefits of clusters for regional growth and development.,This research addresses the call to further investigate the link between family SMEs and innovation in developing countries, given that SMEs may also act as a lively player for regional development.,El objetivo de este articulo es investigar las estrategias de busqueda de innovacion abierta de las pequenas y medianas empresas familiares y no familiares en un cluster basado en los recursos naturales.,Este estudio esta basado en un analisis empirico con una muestra de 245 empresas Chilenas.,Los resultados muestran que no hay diferencias significativas en las actividades internas de innovacion entre las pequenas y medianas empresas familiares y no-familiares de la muestra. Sin embargo, se han encontrado diferencias en las estrategias de busqueda de innovacion abierta que utilizan de las empresas. Las empresas familiares buscan nuevas ideas y conocimiento para innovar entre sus contactos mas cercanos (por ejemplo: clientes, proveedores y competidores). Las empresas no-familiares se enfocan en contactos mas amplios (por ejemplo: tales como universidades, instituciones publicas y ferias internacionales).,Este estudio muestra que distinguir entre empresas familiares y no familiares dentro de los cluster basados en los recursos naturales es importante. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 HR professionals belonging to a multi-campus university system in Mexico.,The study shows that participation in the online community did not occur as expected by those promoting its use. An initial inductive analysis showed that the factors that undermine participation had to do with the interface design of the technology and the individual motivations and benefits derived from participation. A second analysis, using ANT showed how processes of negotiation, conflict, enrolment, alignment, and betrayal that occurred during the emergence and evolution of the new network played a critical role in technology adoption leading to the dissolution of the initiative to adopt the collaborative technology.,The study shows the value of ANT as a tool to better understand the adoption and use of collaborative technology. The analysis goes beyond existing explanations of participation, which tend to focus attention on matters such as the interface design or the personal motivations and benefits derived from participation. It does so by moving away from solely looking at what occurs within the boundaries of a community and understanding the context within which it is being introduced. It prompts the analysis of moments of problematization, interessement, enrolment, and mobilization to explore the adoption process, including the role of non-human actors.,El objetivo del articulo es explorar el valor de la Teoria del Actor-Red como lente teorico para explicar la no adopcion de una tecnologia colaborativa.,La nocion de traduccion y conceptos relacionados pertenecientes a la Teoria del Actor-Red son utilizados para explorar el caso de no participacion en un a comunidad virtual en el contexto organizacional. An aid for technology industry investors","authors":"Katherina Kuschel, Maria-Teresa Lepeley","doi":"10.1108/ARLA-08-2015-0231","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/ARLA-08-2015-0231","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose – Latin American investors are commonly suspicious of investing in copreneurial ventures (a male and female couple) integrated in working teams and show even higher levels of uncertainty when startups are led by a female founder. This paper addresses issues related to women as leaders in copreneurial tech ventures and analyzes whether these ventures are growth-oriented or conform to limited partnerships that merely meet women’s needs for a standard of living. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative, inductive and constructive approach was needed for addressing the research question. Three copreneurial women and two divorced copreneurs were interviewed. A grounded theory approach was followed to analyze data, which identified emerging themes. Findings – Copreneurial teams in technology have similar and complementary high levels of education and skill development. After enough time working together, each partner is well aware of mutual skills and each other’s strengths, allowing them to identify their roles. Both divide work and family, and have developed a level of mutual trust that is essential to moving forward. They commonly show a workaholic tendency with a high rational underpinning. All of these factors strengthen collaboration, and in many instances this business liaison can remain intact despite a breakdown in a sentimental relationship. Additional findings show that their growth-orientation take multiple structures. Practical implications – This study conveys information that can help investors make decisions that support these copreneurial teams. Originality/value – Although representing an increasingly common type of startup team, copreneurs in technology have not yet been addressed as a specific sample in family business research.","PeriodicalId":45515,"journal":{"name":"Academia-Revista Latinoamericana De Administracion","volume":"22 1","pages":"181-197"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2016-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86361758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To explicate these factors, the authors use a general definition of innovation, distinguishing between product and process innovations, and highlight the role played by banking relationships. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of a literature review covering works specializing in innovation, financing constraints, and SME characteristics, a quantitative study is carried out in Spain, using a sample composed by 267 Spanish SMEs.
