This approach provides us with the opportunity to shed light upon the (mostly implicit) capacity Jung’s psychology possesses to move beyond the limitations of individuality and to highlight the psyche’s collective dimension. The paper explores some of the ways in which we can become aware of such processes within the vessel of clinical work. A recap of Jung’s comments on affect and emotion is followed by a discussion of the contribution of the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon and particularly the role of affect in what he calls “transindividuation” (Simondon, 2020; Combes, 2013). Clinical examples will be provided to illustrate the way in which powerful affects can be observed to occur not only within the separate psyches of either patient or analyst, but also within a third field or “bond” (Jung, 1946, para. 367) which I believe we can usefully understand as “transindividual”.
","PeriodicalId":45420,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY","volume":"70 3","pages":"420-440"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2025-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/1468-5922.13089","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144171415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores Carl Jung’s insights into psychological time, illustrating his distinctive approach from philosophical and clinical perspectives. Philosophically, influenced by Henri Bergson, Jung reconceptualizes time as an expression of libido—a dynamic life force marked by continuous transformation that fuels growth, creativity, and the path to individuation. Unlike Eastern philosophical views that often regard time as an illusion, Jung presents a more affirmative perspective, suggesting that our finite, time-bound experience allows for a complementary relationship with the infinite, ultimately facilitating a profound sense of wholeness. Clinically, Jung’s approach diverges from Freudian psychoanalysis by questioning the linear model of psychological development and adopting circular epistemologies to interpret neurotic symptoms. Key Jungian concepts, such as archetypes and the principle of synchronicity, introduce a trans-temporal dimension to the unconscious, where past, present, and future converge and mutually influence one another, transcending linear causality—an idea that intriguingly aligns with concepts in modern quantum physics. Finally, while Jungian psychology challenges everyday notions of time, it does not dismiss the importance of ordinary temporal frameworks. The stability of Chronos and the transcendence of Kairos are equally vital, and a healthy psyche depends on maintaining a balanced harmony between them.

La distinction entre le temps physique et le temps psychologique intrigue les chercheurs depuis le XXe siècle. Cet article explore les idées de Carl Jung sur le temps psychologique, en illustrant son approche distincte du point de vue philosophique et clinique. Du côté philosophique, influencé par Henri Bergson, Jung reconceptualise le temps comme une expression de la libido, une force vitale dynamique marquée par une transformation continue qui alimente la croissance, la créativité et le chemin vers l'individuation. Contrairement aux philosophies orientales qui considèrent souvent le temps comme une illusion, Jung présente une perspective plus positive, suggérant que notre expérience finie et limitée dans le temps permet une relation complémentaire avec l'infini, facilitant en fin de compte un profond sentiment de plénitude. Sur le plan clinique, l'approche de Jung diverge de la psychanalyse freudienne en remettant en question le modèle linéaire du développement psychologique et en adoptant des épistémologies circulaires afin de mieux interpréter les symptômes névrotiques. Les principaux concepts jungiens, tels que l’archétype ou la synchronicité permettent de percevoir une dimension trans-temporelle de l’inconscient, à savoir une convergence du passé, du présent et du futur qui s’associent en une mutualité transcendante la causalité linéaire – une idée qui s’allie de manière intrigante à la ","PeriodicalId":45420,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY","volume":"70 3","pages":"441-461"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2025-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144171189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focusing on girls, the author suggests that the female hero plays an underexposed yet vital role in girls' individuation. The female hero is the female counterpart to the male hero, which in a patriarchal culture has been commonly assumed to be the source of support at this stage. It enables girls—supported by father and imagination—to liberate themselves and meet the demands for adjustment to the fatherly world while gendering their ego as feminine with an openness to the other sex where opposites are at play. Based in classical and post-Jungian theory, the author presents empirical material gathered during anthropological fieldwork in a Copenhagen primary school and includes dream, drawing and narrative to show how the female hero emerges and becomes an important element in resolving the developmental and individuation crisis girls may encounter as they enter into the educational system and venture further out into the world. A client case connects un-resolve in preschool to a later mid-life crisis.

Dieser Aufsatz bietet eine neue Perspektive auf die frühe Individuation, indem er beispielsweise Albträume von Vorschulkindern als Ausdruck einer ersten Individuationskrise und als Teil der Trennung des","PeriodicalId":45420,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY","volume":"70 2","pages":"277-299"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2025-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143770043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Before the Golden Flower: Jung’s Early Engagement with the Alchemist Zosimos of Panopolis","authors":"Fabiana Lopes da Silveira","doi":"10.1111/1468-5922.13086","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1111/1468-5922.13086","url":null,"abstract":"
A common assumption about Jung is that his interest in alchemy only began in 1928, when he was sent the Chinese writing The Secret of the Golden Flower by Richard Wilhelm. However, a closer look at Jung’s earlier writings reveals that his engagement with alchemical literature started much earlier than is often acknowledged. Imagery from the dream-visions of the alchemist Zosimos of Panopolis, first discussed in detail by Jung in his 1937 lecture “Einige Bemerkungen zu den Visionen des Zosimos” (1938), had already caught Jung’s attention decades before, in Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido (1912). This imagery also seems to be present in Jung’s self-induced fantasies which culminated in Liber Novus (The Red Book). By investigating Jung’s receptions of Zosimos’ writings in Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido and Liber Novus, this article intends to challenge the narrative that Jung only started building a meaningful relationship with alchemical literature in the 1920s and to understand why this view became so common. This paper also argues that, while Liber Novus has been a great source of insight into Jung’s writings that followed his “confrontation with the unconscious”, it can also illuminate parts of Jung’s work prior to this experience that have been neglected.

Eine verbreitete Annahme über Jung ist, daß sein Interesse an Alchemie erst 1928 begann, als ihm die chinesische Schrift Das Geheim","PeriodicalId":45420,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY","volume":"70 2","pages":"194-216"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143770634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
