Males obtained a slightly higher Full Scale IQ than females of 0.04d (0.6 IQ points), but this difference is not statistically significant. There was no consistent sex difference in variability. There were statistically significant differences between males and females in a number of index IQs and subtests, notably the higher scores obtained by boys on the Fluid Reasoning Index and Information and the higher scores obtained by girls on the Processing Speed Index and Coding. Also given are the sex differences on the American WISC-III. The results show similar sex differences in the two samples.","PeriodicalId":45285,"journal":{"name":"MUSICAL QUARTERLY","volume":"61 1","pages":"111-116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41572096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Outcomes related to the life cycle, such as fertility, infant mortality and life expectancy, are examined, as well as problem behaviors and sexually transmitted diseases. Results show that on most of these measures, differences between European-origin Australians and Australian Aborigines are larger than those between blacks and whites in the United States. In Rushton’s theoretical framework, this indicates that Australian Aborigines are higher r and lower K than Negroids.","PeriodicalId":45285,"journal":{"name":"MUSICAL QUARTERLY","volume":"61 1","pages":"36-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47029914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Little known today, even in his home country, Lavallée enjoyed an international career as a performer and educator, and spent many years as a “popular” musician in the United States before turning exclusively to “classical” music. Design: We completed a cost analysis from a payer’s perspective. In this setting, there is a single-payer model of service delivery. Setting: In Calgary, ‘Safeworks Harm Reduction Program,’ was established in late 2017 and offers 24/7 access to SCS. The facility is a nurse-led service, available for client drop-in. We conducted a cost analysis for the entire duration of the program. This covers two years and three months. Measurements: We assessed costs using the following factors, using government health databases: monthly operational costs of providing services for drug consumption, cost of providing EMS for clients with overdoses who could not be revived at the facility, and benefit of EMS costs averted from overdoses that were successfully managed at the SCS. Findings: The proportion of clients who have overdosed at the SCS has decreased steadily for the duration of the program. The number of overdoses that can be managed on site at the SCS has trended upward, currently 98%. Each overdose that is managed at the SCS produces approximately $1,600 CAD in cost savings, with a savings of over $2.3 million for the lifetime of the program. Conclusions: Overdose management at an SCS creates cost savings by offsetting costs required for managing overdoses using emergency services.","PeriodicalId":45285,"journal":{"name":"MUSICAL QUARTERLY","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47484504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Substantial differences in death rate of different ethnicities were found that are not easily explained by demographic characteristics of these groups such as age and urban-versus-rural residence. This study looks at possible explanations for these disparities. Socio-economic factors such as income and housing conditions are related to the observed differences in Covid-19 death rates, but average intelligence appears to be the best correlate. We also explore ethnic differences in the prevalence of some major chronic medical conditions that are associated with Covid-19 mortality, and find that these appear insufficient as explanations for the different mortality rates. It is hypothesized that intelligence has both direct effects by making people more able to avoid infection, and indirect effects through socio-economic conditions and through lifestyle factors that can lead to chronic health problems.","PeriodicalId":45285,"journal":{"name":"MUSICAL QUARTERLY","volume":"60 1","pages":"511-524"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43620269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(2016) found correlations between pupil size and measures of intelligence, with r values around .30. We attempted to replicate this association in a large dataset of US military personnel (n = 4,462). General intelligence, g, was extracted from 19 diverse tests. We first confirmed that right and left eye pupil size measures are strongly correlated (r = .97), suggesting high measurement reliability for this phenotype. However, unlike Tsukuhara et al., we could establish only small to nonexistent associations between cognitive ability and pupil size (r’s -.01 to .06, r with g specifically = .05). Regression analyses, controlling for multiple covariates, revealed that the association in this large representative sample was entirely attributable to confounding with race/ethnicity. Mean pupil size (mm) was 3.56, 3.35, and 3.23 for whites, Hispanics, and blacks, respectively. Relative to whites, this corresponds to effect sizes of 0.22 and 0.34 d. It is unclear why our results differ from those reported by Tsukahara et al. (2016), but the ethnic size rank order suggests an evolutionary explanation in terms of geo-bio-climatic selection for pupil size.","PeriodicalId":45285,"journal":{"name":"MUSICAL QUARTERLY","volume":"60 1","pages":"525-538"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46605438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
