Images from paintings to digital photographs influence how Americans see mountains and reproduce a collective vision. I describe the process by which this collective vision of nature and mountains in the United States has been constructed through the dissemination of visual media and the rise of domestic tourism. The progression of landscape representation modes over the past two centuries has continuously distanced the image from reality. Since the American collective vision of the mountain is a simulacrum, I use Jean Baudrillard's orders of simulation as a heuristic for understanding the diachronic relationship between the landscape and its visual representations. I argue that this collective vision possesses the powers to colonize, to nationalize, to exclude, and to constrain ways of seeing mountains. These powers inform one another to the present day and are all entangled with the collective vision of mountains. I trace the history of mountain representation in America and the process of American orogenesis to show how image production and distribution is linked to the orders of simulation and the power trajectory from colonization to nationalization to exclusion and ultimately to a myopic view of mountains.","PeriodicalId":45137,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Geography","volume":"38 1","pages":"102 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08873631.2020.1775005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46677949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that for the communities affected, this is not just a matter of land; it is also a matter of place. The paper introduces the concept of “territorial grabbing” as a way of understanding our spatial surroundings beyond considerations of land tenure, ownership, use, and occupation, taking into consideration symbolic and emotional structures, power relations, and social configurations involved in contexts of social occupation and appropriation. The paper presents how the actions and activities of the mining companies triggered processes of territorial grabbing, thus, confronting the communitieś spatial understandings with the spatial logic of the mining companies.","PeriodicalId":45137,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Geography","volume":"38 1","pages":"150 - 176"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08873631.2020.1857633","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42000511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research project features collaborative engagements undertaken with them, with the aim of sharing their observations, wisdom and concerns. Caiçara live primarily by artisanal small-scale fishing, cultivation of modest crops, and recently, catering to tourists. Their ways of life have remained substantially unchanged hundreds of years, until recently. The pattern of their lives highlights changing ecological conditions, manifesting vulnerability of the ecosystem and traditional fishing practices. Linked intimately to the environment, their ways serve to magnify many of the world’s most pressing concerns about climate change, the need for conservation, the effects of governmental regulation and the devaluing of traditional knowledge. The representation – or misrepresentation – of a people to the wider world crucially shapes their fortunes and promotes or inhibits their ability to effect positive conditions in their environment. In recognition of a long debate in cultural geography about the methods, merits and pitfalls of representation, the necessity remains for some type of portrayal of a people, if for no other reason than to permit them to be politically recognised. This participatory fieldwork transcends disciplinary boundaries through active witnessing.","PeriodicalId":45137,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Geography","volume":"38 1","pages":"50 - 80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08873631.2020.1839711","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44654637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper approaches the concept of therapeutic landscapes from an architectural perspective, analysing three separate case studies relating to geothermal architecture from the Ring of Fire. It attempts to bridge a gap in the literature regarding geothermal therapeutic landscapes, by understanding these places not purely as ‘blue spaces’ but rather as socio-cultural encounters which influence material and physical architectural conditions. This paper contributes to our understanding of the role of culture in producing and maintaining architectural places by reflecting on the way in which individuals and groups engage with place, their range of social encounters, experiences, narratives, affective beliefs, and embodiments that combine with architectural materiality and the associated complex culturally-produced meanings.","PeriodicalId":45137,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Geography","volume":"38 1","pages":"28 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08873631.2020.1820682","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43158839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This analysis is based ethnographic work in the village, including qualitative interviews with fifty residents, statistical data, press articles, and mapping. The results of my field study appeared to be out of kilter with the abundant literature on the themes I had selected and I was forced to re-center my study by establishing new models: instead of taking a migratory, ethnicist and transnationalist perspective to my study of a dominant group of Bolivian migrants, I decided to formalize a psycho-social geography. I questioned how globalization dynamics and the presence of various (mobile) inhabitants contribute to evolutions within a village community. My objective here is to demonstrate that researchers should be open to questioning their selected paradigms and to developing new analytical tools. As a result, the researcher will be able to produce more pertinent results.","PeriodicalId":45137,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Geography","volume":"37 1","pages":"323 - 335"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08873631.2020.1822645","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59907751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
