This is a study of the outstanding achievements of the Indonesian Pencak Silat athletes at the 18th Asian Games (AG) sporting event. There are many aspects that determine sports success; one of which is the athletes’ psychological skills factor. The purpose of this study is to explore psychological skills of Indonesian Pencak Silat athletes at the 18th Asian Games. Method. This study employed a retrospectives causal-comparative design method. The psychological aspects and achievements of Pencak Silat athletes are not yet available, and it therefore became an interesting exploration of Pencak Silat athletes’ psychological skills. The sample was 22 Pencak Silat athletes, with an average age of 22.8 years. The instrument employed was The Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports (PSIS). The data analysis techniques employed were descriptive statistics and document analysis. Results. The results show that the psychological skills of motivation, confidence, anxiety control, mental preparation, team emphasis, and concentration in a Pencak Silat athlete are high. Conclusion. The results show that the six aspects of a Pencak Silat athlete’s psychological skills are high. This is new evidence that strengthens the theory that a Pencak Silat athlete’s psychological skills, which are special elements of sports psychology, contribute to achieving success. © Idōkan Poland Association “IDO MOVEMENT FOR CULTURE. Early specialisation does not guarantee later competitive success. Development of general motor skills appears to be the key factor in achieving maximum success in sports at an older age. To prevent burn-out and early specialisation, the Slovak Karate Union introduced a new competition discipline – the Karate Agility Course (KAC), where young karateka apply their fundamental motor skills. The aim of this research was to examine the reliability of the KAC as a new competition discipline for young karate athletes. Material and Methods. Forty four young national level karateka participated in the study: 28 males (age 9.1±1.8 y, body mass 40.0±12.4 kg) and 16 females (age 9.9±2.7 y, body mass 38.9±8.8 kg). All performed the KAC for both age categories twice: test and re-test sessions were carried out on separate occasions, 1 week apart. Results. Test and re-test results showed the KAC to be reliable. Net time and total time for 8-11 year old children did not display any difference between the test and the re-test. The SEM and ICC for both variables were <5% and >.90, respectively. The Bland and Altman analyses reported a mean difference (bias) ± the 95% limits of agreement. Conclusions. The study showed that the new KAC discipline, with effort patterns replicating karate combat demands, can be considered as a reliable, karate-specific field test for assessing karatekas’ physical performance.","PeriodicalId":45092,"journal":{"name":"Ido Movement for Culture-Journal of Martial Arts Anthropology","volume":"167 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74341918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article focuses on the phenomenon of military items buried with individuals anthropologically identified as female. While the body of sources informing the analysis of this archaeological phenomenon have already been presented in a separate article [Bochnak 2010], this publication will discuss the possible lines of interpretation for such finds and attempt to explain them. Is the presence of military items in the graves of women enough to posit that warrior-women did exist in the Iron Age? Or perhaps, should it perhaps be viewed as an expression of other customs, not necessarily indicative of women actually wielding arms, barring exceptional cases? Methods. The article discusses both ancient and early mediaeval written sources mentioning women taking part in combat in the context of Central Europe [Cassius Dio, Vita Aureliani, Jordanes, Getica , Isidore of Seville, Etymologiæ, Paul the Deacon, Historia Langobardorum and Liutprandi Leges]. It is possible that at least some of these mentions pertain to extraordinary situations requiring all members of a local community capable of bearing arms to fight. For the Germanic peoples, the idea of armed women would not have been improper or offensive. The figure of the Valkyries – the fierce mythical daughters of Odin – should be testament enough. Nevertheless, all the above sources speak of territories which were either close to the borders of the Roman Empire or the location of which are not strictly defined. Sadly, we do not possess any similar sources confirming the existence of female fighters north of the Carpathians in the younger pre-Roman and Roman period. To demonstrate warrior women did exist, we first need to consider the social implications of the phenomenon, as well as the tactical advantages this may have entailed. Accounts of female warriors mainly describe communities which preferred ranged weapons over hand-to-hand combat, as was often the case among nomadic peoples. Cavalry formations were especially common in the steppes of Eurasia or America but both Central and Western Europe lacked the swathes of open space for such tactics to take hold. While the Germanic social order did allow women to assume prestigious functions, for example as envoys, it does not necessarily follow that these women would have enjoyed the privilege of carrying arms. Results & Conclusions. It seems more likely that the weapons discovered in graves did not belong to the deceased as such but were a form of funerary offerings or gifts. They may have served a magical purpose of some sort or were perhaps an expression of respect for the buried women. And even though women of the Przeworsk culture may have occasionally participated in armed combat, there is little evidence that they may be called warrior-women in the proper sense. © Idōkan Poland Association “IDO MOVEMENT FOR CULTURE. Competitive anxiety and self-confidence can be influenced by a number of factors, including skills levels and changes during sporting events. However, the effect of changes in-event are unclear. Problem and Aim. We aimed to compare in-event competitive anxiety and self-confidence among Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) athletes with different belt colors and compare the levels between the first and second bouts. 113 BJJ male athletes (26.6 ± 5.36 years) competing in the Northeastern Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2017 were included. Methods. They responded to the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R) after weighing and 15 min before their first fight and those who won responded again before their second bout. Cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence domains were analyzed. Null-hypothesis test and magnitude-based inference analysis were performed. Results. The athletes in the black belt group were older and more experienced (p<0.05). There was no difference between belt color groups in cognitive and somatic anxiety, and self-confidence (p>0.05). However, after winning there was a decrease in cognitive and somatic anxiety only in the blue, purple and brown belt groups, while only the black belt group increased self-confidence. Conclusions. We conclude that skills levels did not influence competitive anxiety and self-confidence in combat sports, but it did influence how it changed during a competition. © Idōkan Poland Association “IDO MOVEMENT FOR CULTURE.
