Mechanical engineering can make valuable contributions. Historical documents made of paper have unique characteristics that must be considered for their preservation and exhibition. Specially designed encasements have emerged as a solution to meet these requirements. In the present research, a comparative design study was carried out. The study comprises identifying the main functions of the encasements. Subsequently, it is analyzed how the capsules that appear in the literature have solved these functions. With the information obtained, three new encasements were designed for historical documents in Mexico. From the results and design experiences, some insights and design principles were obtained; these can be universally applied.","PeriodicalId":45083,"journal":{"name":"Archive of Mechanical Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135584606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The character of volumetric Lorentz forces acting on coils of compressing and expanding inductors was discussed, and numerically determined distributions of stresses and displacements created in coils under the impact of these forces were presented. The problems presented are relevant when designing durable inductors intended for industrial applications.","PeriodicalId":45083,"journal":{"name":"Archive of Mechanical Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135724056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology ensures proper interpretation of nonlinear results of numerical analyses of thin-walled structures. The suggested methodology is based on carrying out, in parallel to nonlinear numerical analysis, experimental research on some selected crucial zones of load-carrying structures. Attention is drawn to the determinants concerning the perfor-mance of an adequate experiment. The author points out on indicating the role of model tests as a fast and economically justified research instruments practicable when designing thin-walled load-carrying structures. The presented considerations are illustrated by an example of a structure whose geometrical complexity and ranges of deformation are characteristic for modern solutions applied in the load-carrying structures of airframes. As the representative example, one selected the area of the load-carrying structure that contains an extensive cut-out, in which the highest levels and stress gradients occur in the conditions of torsion evoking the post-buckling states within the permissible loads. The stress distributions within these ranges of deformations were used as the basis for determining the fatigue life of the structure.","PeriodicalId":45083,"journal":{"name":"Archive of Mechanical Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135724063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A regular formwork can be improved to have more functions, e.g., the formwork itself can climb to the desired construction site. Climbing characteristics of the formwork as well as opening and closing characteristics of the formwork shell are essential criteria for evaluating the performance of a self-climbing formwork. The effective ones were mentioned in different studies, where most of them were published in patents of countries, e.g., the United States and China. Dissimilar from these studies, this paper presents several improvements for some certain groups to enhance the features of a hydraulic self-climbing formwork. Based on the analysis of the composition and the working principle of the actual climbing formwork types, a new opening and closing method of the formwork shells and a new rail clamping device are suggested. They are applied to design a self-climbing formwork with the shell’s working size of 4 m × 3 m. Their load capacity, as well as the flatness of the concrete surface after casting, are assessed. The proposed solutions can result in various advantages, e.g., the shorter initial alignment time, the increase of the quality concrete surface, and the maximal automation for construction operations.","PeriodicalId":45083,"journal":{"name":"Archive of Mechanical Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68944898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cur-rently, available transportation systems have numerous limitations, therefore, the idea of a high-speed transportation system moving in reduced-pressure conditions has emerged recently. This paper presents an approach to the modelling and simulation of the dynamic behaviour of a simplified high-speed vehicle that hovers over the track as a magnetically levitated system. The developed model is used for control system design. The purpose of passive and active suspension discussed in the text is to improve both the performance and stability of the vehicle as well as ride comfort of passengers travelling in a compartment. Comparative numerical studies are performed and the results of the simulations are reported in the paper with the intent to demonstrate the benefits of the approach employed here.","PeriodicalId":45083,"journal":{"name":"Archive of Mechanical Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68945188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under some circumstances a rope can temporarily go completely slack, while a moment later, the force in the rope can increase to nominal or even higher value. Periodic occurrence of such phenomena can be damaging to the supporting structure of the crane and its driver. In the paper, mathematical models of offshore cranes that allow for analysis of the taut-slack phenomenon are presented. Results of numerical calculations show that the method of load stabilization proposed by the authors in their earlier works can eliminate this problem.","PeriodicalId":45083,"journal":{"name":"Archive of Mechanical Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135544656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
