{"title":"Histories of Sexual Violence in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Latin America: An Introduction","authors":"Daniel J. R. Grey, Eliza Teixeira de Toledo","doi":"10.7440/histcrit86.2022.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7440/histcrit86.2022.01","url":null,"abstract":". Objective/Context: This article explains why current events demand the exploration of histories of sexual violence, setting the four pieces that comprise this special issue in their broader historiographical and social context. Despite the important body of work that has been produced to date exploring issues related to gender and sexuality in this region during the nineteenth and twentieth century, sexual violence remains severely understudied. Methodology: Linking to protests against sexual and gender-based violence and harassment in Brazil and internationally since the mid-2010s, such as the global #MeToo campaign in 2017, the article reviews current scholarship on histories of sexual violence. Originality: This special issue represents a valuable collection of essays specifically devoted to the history of sexual violence in Latin America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The article demonstrates why this is such a pressing issue for historians to consider in 2022 and contextualises the following contributions. Conclusions: There is an urgent need for further research into the histories of sexual violence across different Latin American countries in later modernity, especially since the issues highlighted by all four authors—particularly related to gender, racial, and class discrimination and stereotyping that harm vic-tims—remain relevant to contemporary experiences. of Britain India. “‘Monstrous and Indefensible’? Objective/Context: This paper studies the role of the Chilean state during the great drought of 1967-1969 as a mediator between human beings and nature. Institutional adaptations and the effort to improve the infrastructure were elements of continuity with respect to previous droughts, but there were novelties as well, such as attempts to pursue weather modification and the artificial melting of glaciers. The support of technologies and scientists operating from peripheral state institutions was essential for these purposes. All the above took place in the context of the Cold War when the predominant environmental imaginaries made human intervention look favorable and necessary for the modernization of countries. Methodology: Diverse primary sources were used, such as ministerial documents, decrees, bulletins, and reports of different state institutions that allowed understanding the logic of state management during the water crisis. Similarly, research in national and international press helped identify how imaginaries about the environment were expressed and disseminated publicly, which tended to validate novel efforts to control nature. Originality: This is an original study for Latin America, which addresses the early appearance of science and technology in the efforts of what today would be known as geoengineering: mainly through the observation of new actors, which expanded the traditional forms of mediation between humans and nature, led by the state, concerning climate crises. Conclusions: In the 1960s, optimism grew for the human capacity to control and manipulate water resources by appealing to ways other than those previously known, associated with infrastructure development. Expert knowledge was placed at the service of peripheral institutions of the state to promote these changes with lasting consequences. The human desire to control nature at all costs was validated, which helps explain the temporal projection of experiments with artificial rain and glacier control to the present day in Chile","PeriodicalId":45016,"journal":{"name":"Historia Critica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44612747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective/Context: This article explains the causes of the tax evasion on metals in the royal mines of the province of Pamplona in the New Kingdom of Granada (nrg), in which royal box metals were not declared from the year 1636 to 1678. However, there were miners, mayors of mines, indigenous and enslaved people dedicated to mining in that same period. The Madrid authorities sought to establish the amounts defrauded through two visits, one carried out in 1659 and the other in 1676. Methodology : In addition to fiscal, ordinary and general visits, were consulted accounts of the royal treasury of Pamplona and the historiography of the New Granada mining. Originality: These revisions made it possible to show how the tax on metals was cheated in this jurisdiction and offer answers to a widespread phenomenon throughout Latin America and evoked by historians but rarely exposed in its details and specific cases, given its nature and the scant documentary footprint. Conclusions : Among the results, it is highlighted that the values potentially defrauded in the years analyzed, 1636-1678, reflect a higher production than that given in the stage with tax ❧ Este artículo es parte de una investigación posdoctoral acerca del fraude fiscal al tributo minero en la Nueva Granada durante","PeriodicalId":45016,"journal":{"name":"Historia Critica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44512246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective/Context: To analyze the elements that constituted the category of “honor” in Panama City during the period following the construction of the Canal, concerning race and gender; and to understand how migrant West Indian women negotiated these expectations of honor. Methodology: The research stems from an analysis of Panamanian legal codes to define “honor” as a socio-cultural construct and to understand moral anxieties about West Indian immigration. The cases of the Calidonia district in Panama City are also analyzed to observe the intervention of Afro-Antillean women in public and legal spheres of the state. Originality: In addition to analyzing a novel documentary source, such as the Panama City corregiduría cases, this article compiles the historiography on honor in Latin America and shows how this concept devel-oped in Panama during the US imperial incursion and the construction of the Canal, and how Afro-Antillean immigrant women navigated Panamanian discourses of honor through their vulgar public quarrels, in which they asserted their own moral values and social status.
