When the governor’s wife converts to Christianity, dumps all her earthly riches outside her front door, and turns celibate, the governor has the apostle tortured and his skin flayed off, but Thomas survives, and uses his peeled-off skin to raise the dead. This paper uses Kathryn Tanner’s concept of culture to compare the ideals advocated by this story – servitude to Christ, voluntary poverty, sexual abstinence, readiness to suffer, and zeal for evangelization – to ideals expressed in first-century Christian literature. However, even though the allusion to the story of creation, Eden, and the Fall is undeniable, this hymn does not speak of the human being as κατ᾿εἰκόνα, but straightforwardly as the εἰκών of God’s glory. We do not have any other further information about it. This article developed a hypothesis that the anonymous bishop may be the bishop of Aosta, Northern Italy, accused of proditio patriae, according to Cassiodorus, Var. 1,9. However, on the contrary of other bishops, accused of such a serious crime, who were usually exiled, the above mentioned bishop of Aosta is considered as innocent by Theodoric the Great. This could be because of the help of Faustus Niger, mentioned in the Ep. 6,9. Based on this explanation, the note proposes a new translation of the phrase in which “substomachans” occurs. The interpretation offered seems to be backed by Julian of Eclanum’s use of “substomachans”. He is the earliest of the surviving Latin authors to say either of these things about Perseus. And he is apparently the first author to combine these pieces of information – until, that is, John Malalas, who says much the same things about Perseus not once, but twice.
