The transceiver RFIC is composed of a quasi-chaotic signal generator, an OOK modulator, a gain-controlled low noise amplifier (GC LNA), an envelop detector, and a baseband variable gain amplifier (VGA). The quasi-chaotic signal generator proposed in this paper is composed of a voltage control oscillator (VCO), a frequency divider, a PN-generator, and an up-conversion mixer. The chip size is 2.4 x 1.2 mm2. The current of the chip is 41 mA at transmit mode and 17 mA at receive mode with a supply voltage of 1.8 V. Base-band and harmonic device terminations effects will be analysed, identifying novel conditions minimising IMD asymmetry and IM3 power levels. Such conditions, not relying on base-band terminations, are the basis for IM3 products minimisation via second harmonic load selection. The proposed criterion is then verified by harmonic load-pull measurements on a GaN HEMT under two-tone excitation. The proposed novel balanced circuit for power amplifiers provides a high efficiency at maximum as well as backoff output power levels and low sensitivity to load variations. To minimize the quiescent current at low output power levels, an adaptive current-mirror bias circuit can be effectively used. Compact impedance transformation network is designed, using micro-strip transmission lines, so that it simultaneously achieves fundamental load transformation and harmonic impedance control using only two open-circuit stubs (2fo, 3fo). The dimensions of the network's elements were determined in order to concurrently attain a high harmonic suppression, minimum loss and high power added efficiency. The measurement results of the PA prototype, which is designed using a 10 W gallium nitride (GaN) HEMT transistor, showed state-of-the-art drain and power added efficiency (PAE). The achieved PAE, power gain and output power, when the drain is biased at 50 V, were equal to 74%, 12.6 dB and 11.4 W respectively. Although power conversion efficiencies exceeding 80% have been reported for high (20 dBm) rectenna input power levels, wireless batteries will be most beneficial at large distances from sources that will radiate at power levels limited by national and international regulations. Therefore, the challenge is in maximizing the power conversion efficiency of wireless batteries for low input power levels, say 0dBm and below. By directly conjugate matching a rectifying circuit to a microstrip patch antenna, the need for a matching network between the two no longer exists. Thus the efficiency of the wireless battery will improve. Moreover, this matching technique automatically suppresses the reradiation of harmonics by the microstrip patch antenna since the harmonics will be mismatched. Thus, the impedance matching and filtering network encountered in traditional wireless battery designs has become obsolete. With the aid of analytical models developed for antenna and rectifier, single-layer, internally matched and filtered PCB rectennas have been designed for low input power levels. An efficiency of 52% for OdBm input power has been realized at 2.45 GHz for a wireless battery realized on FR4, showing an improvement -next to the size and complexity reduction -of more than 10% over a traditional rectenna design. The antenna is fed by a coplanar gap coupled with a V-shaped patch. Three inverted V-shaped slots are assumed on the rhombic patch and hence four resonant frequencies are obtained. Broadside radiation patterns and gain of over 5.0 dBi are also obtained. Experiments were carried out to verify the results estimated by IE3D simulator. Good agreements between simulated and measured results are confirmed. To further evaluate the performance, rhombic MSA with six inverted V-shaped slots is also investigated. Again, this antenna model accomplishes excellent multiband performances over the seven observed frequencies. One of the limitations of the conventional RFID system is its orientation, which poses a technical challenge to its performance. We propose a dual-planar L-shaped RFID microstrip patch antenna, which is formed by folding a flat uni-planar rectangular microstrip patch with a 90deg bend. The proposed design is tested and is seen to remove the orientation sensitivity of the RFID tag antenna, giving a 3-dB beamwidth of 150 deg. This antenna consists of monopole array having L-shaped structure for downsizing, the length of each radiating element being set to be quarter a free-space wavelength in each UHF TV channel. The characteristics were analyzed and measured. According to the analytical results, the antenna gain was 0 dBi on average from 400 MHz to 700 MHz. The antenna was loaded in a handy-type mobile TV and the carrier noise ratios of analog terrestrial broadcasting channels were evaluated. It was confirmed that the proposed L-shaped monopole array is applicable to mobile and indoor terrestrial broadcasting TV antennas. The GaN HEMT amplifier attains the output power of 3 W and the maximum power added efficiency of 62% with a 50 V drain bias for class-AB operation.
