If the depth of field of the microscope is infinitesimal, the image obtained from each focusing plane is an in-focus slice of the optical density of the specimen. The authors show that the finite aperture of any practical microscope inevitably results in the loss of a biconic region of frequencies in the 3-D Fourier spectrum of the optical density, oriented in the direction of the optical axis. Thus, the resolution along this axis is severely reduced. Outside the missing cone of frequencies, the spectrum is distorted by a strong low-pass effect. A closed form expression is obtained for the overall distortion function using principles of geometric optics, and by assuming that the absorption of the specimen is linear and nondiffractive. Methods for restoring the 3-D images obtained through optical serial sectioning are considered, and several examples are provided.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126707480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design philosophy of QuickSig has been to extend the Lisp language by a layer of general DSP constructs, abstracts, and structures like signals, filters, windows, graphical presentations, and related signal-processing operations. QuickSig is a fast prototyping system for algorithmic development. It is extendable to include new ways of modeling signals and signal processing, both numerical and symbolic. The main features of the present system and some features that are under development are reported.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115056782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of transmitting individual sinusoids, the entire speech spectrum is transmitted. The synthesizer estimates the frequency, amplitude, and phase of each harmonic from the spectrum. Relatively high-quality speech in the 4.8-9.6 kb/s range is obtained by modeling the magnitude/phase spectrum with a combination of pole-zero analysis, phase prediction and vector quantization. A window subtraction method ensures proper synthesis of unvoiced speech. The system is robust since it does not depend on pitch estimates or voicing decisions.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115249437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A general lower bound is presented for the variance of estimates based on high-order sample moments. Then, an expression is given for the variance of weighted least-squares estimates, of the type recently reported in the literature. The existence of an optimal-weight matrix for such estimates is exhibited. The analytic results are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations for some specific test cases.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116539831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Often, played-back signals are not in synchronism. Synchronization of two sampled waveforms usually requires that one of the signals be interpolated. An adaptive FIR (finite-impulse response) interpolator based on the least-square error criterion is used to synchronize the signals. Analysis of the interpolator shows that in addition to interpolation significant noise rejection is achieved at its output. Since least-squares filters are sensitive to outliers it is necessary to filter out relatively large impulsive disturbances prior to adaptive filtering. The authors present a detection-estimation algorithm for impulsive noise removal.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122858611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that the autocorrelation of an all-pole sequence, obtained by passing white noise through an all-pole filter 1/A(z), is an all-pole sequence of the form 1/A/sup 2/(z). The short-time modified coherence (SCM) representation, proposed here, is an all-pole modeling of the autocorrelation sequence followed by a spectral shaper. The spectral shaper, essentially a square root operator in the frequency domain, compensates for the inherent spectral distortion introduced by the autocorrelation operation on the autocorrelation sequence of the signal. The properties of the SMC representation, especially its robustness to additive white noise, are analyzed. Initial implementation of the SMC in a speaker-dependent isolated-word recognizer shows a considerable improvement over the standard linear predictive coding (LPC) representation. The SMC recognizer achieved an improvement in recognition accuracy equivalent to an increase in input SNR of approximately 13 dB, as compared to the LPC recognizer.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122933899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally speaking, this preprocessing operation reduces the intersignal coherence in the spatial correlation matrix and the variance of the spatial correlation function estimate. Two types of spatial averaging are considered: subaperture averaging and redundancy averaging. Subaperture averaging is shown to significantly reduce coherence only when the source propagation directions are widely spaced while variance reduction is accompanied by a reduction in apparent aperture. In contrast, the reduction of coherence resulting from redundancy averaging is relatively insensitive to source bearing separations. While the aperture is not affected, redundancy averaging may induce bias in the estimated source bearings.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"74 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114253697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It leads to a clarified view of output-error bias and stability. It is shown that a tradeoff between desirable stability and bias characteristics can be achieved in output error by manipulation of the adaptive gain. The composite regressor algorithm (CRA) is introduced as a means of affecting this tradeoff, independent of the gain. Output error is shown to a special case of CRA. A stability constraint for CRA is developed in a theorem, and the bias properties of this algorithm are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"472 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114287704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each source to be coded is assumed to have its own set of admissible quantizers (which can be either scalar or vector quantizers) which do not need to have integer bit rates. The distortion versus rate characteristic of each quantizer set may have an arbitrary shape. The algorithm is very simple in structure and can be applied to any practical coding scheme (such as a subband coder) that needs dynamic bit allocation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":448544,"journal":{"name":"ICASSP-88., International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122189295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
