Design for the environment (DFE) represents an effective strategy for developing ESPs and it needs to be implemented as early as possible in the design process. This paper describes a new framework for DFE methodology and tool development. A new CAD integrated DFE tool, called the DFE workbench, which is based on this new framework is also described.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. This is in part due to uncertainty as to the optimum system for collection and processing, and the ongoing challenges in consolidation, identification and sorting of plastics. This paper presents the results from the development of an economics and logistics model for a regional resin processing facility. This work is being conducted in conjunction with the Tufts University Stakeholder Dialogues on Recycling Engineering Thermoplastics. The model focuses on thermoplastics from electronics, and looks at both post industrial waste from molders and OEMs as well as post consumer waste. The approach considers a material flow that returns recovered thermoplastics back into electronic products as well as into alternative applications. Input and participation by companies along the supply chain including OEMs, recyclers, and resin suppliers has been key to the validity of the models.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. The basis for this form of DfE are the experiences and the data gained in numberless life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle engineering (LCE) studies as well as know how in applying generic modeling, simulations and scenario analysis. The method of life cycle costing (LCC) helps to implement economic aspects, which are often the main important aspects in industrial decision making. The goal is to bring environmental and economic considerations in harmony in respect to a sustainable development. LCE/LCA data and experiences shall be used for DfE to objectify the results, by using these scientific proven methods. It is applied and further developed on examples within the 'active disassembly using smart materials' (ADSM) project. The goals of this project are the demonstration of the feasibility of providing a nondestructive, cost effective, self-disassembly system for industry with the smart material device. Within the consumer electronics sector, existing state of the art products without smart materials are analyzed using LCA and LCC. A subsequent analysis with redesigned products consisting of embedded 'shape memory alloy' (SMA) and 'shape memory polymers' (SMP) devices is conducted. As a final stage the analysis is completed with assessed results and will be included in the activity of redesign for further product development.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. This approach describes much better what is happening in end-of-life scenarios, from the environmental perspective. It is a very powerful concept in assessing recyclability and end-of-life scenarios in general. It takes into account the environmental impact of treatment steps and the value of secondary materials. This paper presents the results of integrating three completely different environmental assessment models into the EWRQ concept: the Eco-Indicator '95, the Eco-Indicator '99 and the Fraunhofer IZM Toxic Potential Indicator.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. In addition, companies are requested to report product stewardship information to customers. However, performing life cycle inventories (LCI) and collecting product stewardship information is expensive. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are widely used to plan, organize, direct, measure, and control logistics, financial and human resources of organizations. Meanwhile, ERP systems are also prepared to register environmental management information, such as weights of raw materials and supplies, use of energy and water. ERP systems include much product and process related information needed for performing life cycle inventories, such as bill of material and work orders. The paper describes how an LCI on a product can be compiled using the ERP system SAP R/3. In addition, allocation methods for supplies on a product level are demonstrated with support from an ERP system. As an example the paper demonstrates how an LCI of an electric product of an automotive supplier was performed using the system SAP R/3. Finally, the paper summarizes the benefits and costs of the use of ERP systems for LCI qualitatively.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. This paper extends the previous research work on the environmental lifecycle impact of e-commerce to sustainable e-supply chain management for typical electronics products. The integrated e-supply chain network structure is modeled to account for material and information flows throughout the supply chain, including product demanufacture and reuse of materials and components. Various parameters defining business, technology and environmental issues of the e-supply chain are represented and optimized in a fuzzy logic based network to model data uncertainty and information gaps. A fuzzy multi-objective optimization method is proposed to-find the best possible balance between supply-chain variables, e-business strategies and environmental performance. As a case study, an e-supply-chain: management of typical desktop personal computers is modeled and optimized. Discrete event system simulation techniques are used to examine the stochastic behavior of the optimal network and further analyze supply chain performance.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. Examples include environmental management systems (EMS), design-for-environment (DfE) programs, restricted material lists, take-back commitment, and performance disclosures. These requirements are part of the growing practice of environmental supply chain management (SCM) that offers opportunities for OEMs to reduce costs and manage risk. The first generation of SCM focused on suppliers' policies, facilities, practices and record of regulatory compliance. Newer product-focused supply chain issues involving environmental attributes along the entire product life-cycle are becoming more common. Product-focused concerns include product composition, materials selection, recyclability, product-use, and product take-back. The shift from facility-based to product-based requirements is driven by high levels of manufacturing outsourcing and by OEMs becoming more accountable for the full life-cycle impact of their products. Verification of requirements is emerging as an important strategic issue for the next generation of SCM. This paper uses SCM examples from the electronics and automotive sectors to demonstrate and examine supply chain management issues and opportunities. Emerging issues for the next generation of SCM are identified.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat. Without making dynamic changes to meet the required capacity, companies could be confronted with the need for more people, space, and capital equipment, all costly investments. Therefore, the performance of demanufacturing operations becomes critical to not only ensuring proper environmental disposal options, but also improving process efficiency and minimizing expense. This paper looks at how the Global-Asset-Recovery Services organization of IBM and its' Asset Recovery Center (ARC) in Endicott, NY have been able to focus on improving both environmental performance and demanufacturing productivity while meeting the challenge of processing increased returns and controlling labor, space, and capital expense. The paper identifies and discuss the key actions taken over the past six years that have led to a continuing environmental disposal improvement. The amount of material dispositioned to the landfill has decreased by over 75%. It also highlights changes and enhancements that have been made to the process and demanufacturing line to realize greater than three times growth in productivity.","PeriodicalId":448468,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment. 2001 IEEE ISEE (Cat.
