Occupational therapy practitioners can address some of these problems. Focus groups were held with 17 occupational therapy participants to identify interventions promoting refugee children’s psychosocial wellbeing in middle childhood in high income countries. Four themes emerged: (1) Making the most with what you have, (2) The child in their various environments, (3) Occupational Therapy lens helping to build a bridge between old and new lives, and (4) Sensitivity matters/considerations. Findings indicate research is needed to identify intervention effectiveness and increase use of macro-level interventions. interventions.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45829589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Persons with fibromyalgia may experience stigma, when nobody understands the condition or how it affects their daily occupations. This retrospective case study describes how occupational therapy, as part of a biopsychosocial and multidisciplinary team approach, can use pain neuroscience education as an effective treatment strategy for fibromyalgia and discusses the benefits of an educational approach to improve our understanding of fibromyalgia, as well as decrease self-stigma and increase occupational performance.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43907736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those with PTSD showed significant SMC symptoms. Presence of SMC can contribute to explaining the PTSD symptoms of hyperarousal, avoidance/numbing, and Criterion E cited in the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (5th ed.) (DSM-5-TR). Participants also received a consultation and handout explaining sensory diet, the occupational therapy self-treatment for their issues, especially hyperarousal. As one of the 44 allied signatory organizations, AOTA staff joined sessions to discuss the $8 billion in new federal stimulus funds for mental health care through 988. The bill provides funding for states to develop a three-digit telecommunication code to support those in a mental health or emotional crisis. Once learning details about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and bill to provide funding, the AOTA Workforce Capacity Building team enlisted the expertise, talents, and resources of members to strategize on upcoming opportunities to help fill the workforce gap of mental health professionals and align views to position the future of the profession in mental and behavioral health. A micro volunteer group emerged consisting of those in academia, practice, and AOTA staff members. In support of the Unified Visionary Signatory, the AOTA encourages occupational therapy practitioners to use their skills, training, and expertise to address mental health in our communities: Every person. Every age. Every condition. This document highlights the challenges and opportunities for the profession of occupational therapy in support of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline bill and resources developed to educate the occupational therapy community. The objective was to assist in mobilizing those in the profession to help fill workforce gaps in mental health.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"321 - 330"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44098299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 99 participants, with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, the WHOQOL-BREF and PANSS were administered. A stepwise linear regression analysis was performed, with those variables of the sensory profile and the dimensions of quality of life that showed a statistically significant correlation. Participants with lower quality of life (WHOQOL-Bref score ≤ 60) showed a higher score in Low Registration profile (t(97) = 2; p = .048; δ = .42). Physical Health showed a moderate negative correlation with Sensory Sensitivity profile (r = −.415; p < .01) and Sensation Avoiding (r = −.372; p < .05). Psychological Health showed a moderate negative correlation with Low Registration (r = −.354; p < .01), Sensory Sensitivity (r = −.307; p < .01) and auditory processing (r = −.343; p < .01). Sensory preference could be a key aspect of mental health rehabilitation programs. Sensory modulation issues seem to be related to the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia. KEY POINTS Sensory preference could be a key aspect of mental health rehabilitation programs. Mental health services should consider the sensory profile of the patient in the evaluation and intervention. Sensory modulation approaches could be complementary interventions to improve the quality of life of people with schizophrenia.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"39 1","pages":"295 - 313"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44463917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
