With reference to the 6-th order dynamic model of the DFIG, the state-space model of the considered power generation unit is extended by including in it the dynamics of the drivetrain. At a first stage, the dynamic model of the power generation unit undergoes approximate linearization around a temporary operating point which is recomputed at each time-step of the control algorithm. The linearization procedure makes use of Taylor series expansion and of the computation of the associated Jacobian matrices. At a second stage an H-infinity controller is developed for the linearized state-space description of the power unit. This provides the solution of the optimal control problem for the wind power system under model uncertainty and external perturbations. For the computation of the controller's feedback gain an algebraic Riccati equation is repetitively solved at each iteration of the control method. Finally, the global asymptotic stability of the control scheme is proven with the use of Lyapunov analysis.","PeriodicalId":447143,"journal":{"name":"2018 5th International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA)","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132735109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Theoretical wave power resource is evaluated using wave hind cast covering 1948–2006. Evaluation of accessible wave power resource is performed in the account of the annual electricity production by wave energy conversion machines, which are based on the point absorber concept and apply water turbine with oscillating blades as a power takeoff subsystem. The theoretical wave power resource in Bulgarian territorial waters are assessed to reach 2187 GWh, which represents 6.208 % of the final electricity consumption in Bulgaria for 2017. The evaluation for the accessible wave power resource shows that it may cover about 1.65% of the final electricity consumption in Bulgaria for 2017.","PeriodicalId":447143,"journal":{"name":"2018 5th International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130428522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stand-alone micro-grids can play a vital role in this context. However, design optimization of such hybrid energy systems is a challenging task. Most of the recent studies use the techno-economic and demand data at the beginning of the project to optimize the system configuration for the micro-grid, which is expected to operate for more than twenty years. Changes in demand, advances in technology, prices of system components and fuel along the timeline are not considered in these studies, which often lead towards unrealistic results. In order to address the aforementioned limitations, the design process of a stand-alone micro-grid is divided into several stages and taken into discussion in this work. System design is optimized in three stages considering the changes of market prices of the system components and demand. Subsequently, each design is analyzed in detailed for a case study in Greece. Results of the study reveal that a significant change in Solar PV (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity can be observed when moving ahead on the time line when considering the changes in market conditions. Accordingly, major change in the operation strategy is observed. However, projected price reduction in energy storage is not sufficient to use it as a seasonal or diurnal storage, which results in poor utilization of PV energy during the summer.","PeriodicalId":447143,"journal":{"name":"2018 5th International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115721921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a stand-alone configuration, the stator feeds a three-phase diode rectifier and a stand-alone electrical load. The dc output voltage of the generator is regulated by applying stator flux-oriented control scheme in synchronous reference frame. The losses in the power electronics components depends on the current flowing through the switches and as such also influences the power rating of the converter. In addition, the speed range of the DFIG is also determined by the converter rating. Thus, in the present paper to extend the speed range, for the same converter rating, the slip of the system is limited which can be achieved by setting the stator frequency free. Since the stator voltage amplitude is imposed by the dc-link voltage which is regulated to a constant reference value, a variation in stator flux magnitude results in a frequency variation. Therefore, the stator frequency can be scheduled in such a way that the output power is maximized. After the dc output voltage and inner d-q controller are designed, simulation tests have been run to find the optimal stator frequency for a fixed range of speed and consequently used as a look up table to improve the power conversion efficiency of the generator system for a limited rotor side converter rating (approximately 22%) in a 2.5:1 speed range at constant dc output voltage and power.","PeriodicalId":447143,"journal":{"name":"2018 5th International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124595198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approximate linearization procedure is applied first to the the nonlinear state-space description of a power unit that comprises a steam turbine and a synchronous power generator. Using this modelling approach the power unit is synchronized with the grid's frequency. Moreover, an H-infinity Kalman Filter that relies on the approximately linearized model is used for representing the fault-free functioning of the power unit. The measured outputs of the power generation unit (that is the generator's turn angle and speed and the turbine's power) are compared against the estimated outputs which are provided by the H-infinity Kalman Filter. The associated differences form the residuals' sequence which in turn undergoes statistical processing in an aim to solve the power unit's fault diagnosis problem. It is shown that the square of the residuals' vector, suitably weighted by the inverse of the covariance matrix of the measured outputs vector of the power unit follows the χ2 distribution and stands for a statistical fault detection test. Actually, by exploiting the statistical properties of the χ2 distribution and its confidence intervals one can define reliable fault thresholds for the power unit's functioning. Whenever the aforementioned fault thresholds are exceeded the existence of a malfunctioning or cyberattack in the power unit can be concluded. Moreover, by applying the previous statistical test to the individual components of the power unit one can distinguish if the fault or cyberattack has taken place in the synchronous generator or in the steam turbine.","PeriodicalId":447143,"journal":{"name":"2018 5th International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126952265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quite often in the context of a smart city and the related technology paradigms and infrastructures that citizens must deal with. However, as the concept of smart cities becomes mainstream, the assumption is that citizens naturally and passively shift with these changes. In any given sector business models are natural benefactors to nascent technologies from which revenues and markets are created. In the smart cities space there is a wide range of innovations over citizen engagement strategies and citizen-centric activities including providing trusted sources for democratic legitimacy and transparency with local governments. The common focus has been on finding the trigger that engages communities in a sustainable way. The novelty in this paper is based on the idea that sustained citizen engagement needs a business model, in the same way that new markets need business models, around which frameworks for stakeholder definition, value added propositions, revenue creation and required outcomes can be developed and shared as a common vision.","PeriodicalId":447143,"journal":{"name":"2018 5th International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127174095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
