{"title":"Human-centered innovations for improving the experience of informal caregivers of people living with neurocognitive disorders","authors":"Atoyebi, Oladele Ademola","doi":"10.14288/1.0407269","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14288/1.0407269","url":null,"abstract":"Informal caregivers are an important part of the Canadian healthcare system. At any given time, about 28% of Canadians are caregivers and up to 50% will become at some point in their lifetime. As more people are being diagnosed with neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) such as dementia, there will be an increasing demand on and for informal caregivers. Caring for a person with a NCD is strenuous and carers experience a high level of burden compared to non-caregivers. Since the care, support, and companionship provided by caregivers are invaluable, there is a need to provide them relief, so they can continue to provide the much-needed assistance while having an appreciable quality of life. Research suggests that appropriate assistive technology reduces stress, and reduces caregiver demands. Technologies have greater impact and relevance if users are involved in the selection and design process of such solutions. A human-centered approach to design promotes the creation of solutions that are usable and acceptable to users. The overall goal of this research was to involve informal caregivers and people with NCDs to explore their needs, identify potential technological solutions, prioritize these and develop an initial prototype of a potential solution to meet their caregiving needs. To achieve this goal, five sequential studies were conducted including a mixed-methods study to determine the problematic care activities of informal caregivers of people with disabilities, a systematic review to identify the needs of informal caregivers, a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of technology-based interventions for meeting the needs of carers, a survey to identify the most prioritized technological solutions, including services for informal caregivers and human-centered prototyping of the most prioritized technology. This study found that people with NCDs and their caregivers prefer to be involved directly in identifying their needs and the practical measures to address them satisfactorily. Participants pointed out their unmet needs and continued to be interested in the process to determine the best solutions to address them. {"title":"\"The desert of the real\" : fictional Middle Eastern countries in American media","authors":"Christensen, Alexander C.","doi":"10.14288/1.0416749","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14288/1.0416749","url":null,"abstract":"Kamistan, Qurac, and Abuddin mark just three of the innumerable fictional Middle Eastern countries that proliferate American media works, but why exactly have these nonexistent places become such inexplicable fixtures in Hollywood cinema, television, comic books, and video games? This thesis explores three of these fictitious nations—Aladdin’s (1992) Kingdom of Agrabah; Dune’s (2021) desert planet Arrakis, scenes for which were filmed in Jordan; and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s (2019) Urzikstan—to begin to account for this phenomenon. These case studies represent three prevalent mediums and styles for imagining the Middle East: the magical ancient Middle East in animation; desert planets that proliferate science fiction; and the contemporary war-torn Middle East in military-themed video games. Each setting has been constructed from the “standardized molds” Edward Said details in Orientalism (26), bestowing each with familiar archetypes, stereotypes, and references that Western spectators identify. This mold, in turn, serves as a shorthand that assists with the spectators’ reading or understanding the milieux. Because the role that imagination and virtuality play in constructing these fictional Middle Easts, the thesis reads each of the case studies as Baudrillardian simulacra, copies without originals, each representing single installments in longer series of similar representations (the antiquated Middle East with genies, treasure, and magic carpets; the Middle East as the Cold War’s Third World, home to powerful resources and caught between competing empires; the Middle East as a site of instability and conflict). Plausibility and pleasure function as two throughlines that guide the paper. Plausibility relates to how the texts construct their milieux, operating within the standardized molds and drawing on familiar signs to plausibly convey their Middle Easternness to spectators. These milieux construct both shared and unique pleasures, paramount of which is a sense of Western authority over these virtual Middle Easts, which are created by, influenced by, and ultimately controlled by Western protagonists. {"title":"The role and impact of religious institutions in refugee settlement in the city of Kelowna","authors":"Derksen, Murray","doi":"10.14288/1.0401476","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14288/1.0401476","url":null,"abstract":"Canada is one of the leading refugee settlement nation states in the United Nations, with private sponsorship at the vanguard of settlement in the country. Canada has a highly developed private refugee sponsorship program, with more than 70 percent of the private sponsorship groups registered with religious institutions. The main purpose of this exploratory case study was to discover the role and impact of religious institutions in refugee settlement in the City of Kelowna. Kelowna is a mid-sized city in the interior of British Columbia that has seen a significant increase in refugee sponsorship since the response of Canada to the Syrian crisis in 2015. Most of the private sponsorship done in the City of Kelowna has been through religious institutions, who have worked in collaboration with government funded settlement services and community partners. Through various churches and the local mosque, former refugees are being settled and integrated into this primary urban center in the interior of the province. Data for this study was collected through two research tools: a questionnaire survey distributed among former refugees in Kelowna; and semi-structured interviews with key informants. The following questions helped guide both the questionnaire survey and key informant interviews: What barriers and challenges do refugees face as they settle in a mid-size city like Kelowna? What coping strategies do refugees use when settling in Kelowna? What is the role and impact of religious institutions in facilitating refugee settlement experiences in Kelowna? What policy and best practice recommendations can be made to enhance the settlement experiences of refugees in Kelowna? The results of this study show that churches and the mosque have a direct impact by helping newly arrived refugees cope with the barriers and challenges they face. This case study discusses three primary areas of impact: bridging the language barrier between newcomers, service providers, and sponsorship providers; assisting former refugees to establish their new lives in Kelowna and move them towards integration; and helping to ensure that newcomers move towards prosperity rather than precarity as they re-establish themselves and their families in the City of Kelowna. Many potential areas of further study were discovered during this research project, some of them needing immediate attention. The seventh story in the collection, “Providence,” remains one of the earliest examples of Canadian prose which explicitly explores the conflicts inherent to women’s experiences of feminist liberation and motherhood, and is among Munro's least critically explored stories. “Providence” captures the tenuous and exquisite experience of single-mothering a young child, its difficulties and sacrifices, and the equally painful and (still) unspeakable choice to leave one’s maternal role behind. It accordingly takes Carson’s alleged name-dropping as a starting point to argue that Decreation is a project of re-engagement that is underpinned by synthetic disjunctions of competing viewpoints. To this end, Carson relies on the principle of intratextuality, which instils a blurring of the speaker’s identity in the reader, while her use of echoes ingrains the notion of decreation in the reader's mind. Since both aesthetic strategies hinge on the principles of creative reproduction and recognition, they are capable of evoking a sense of iteration. Samson's Winter Wheat","authors":"Bronwyn Malloy","doi":"10.14288/CL.VI241.192427","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14288/CL.VI241.192427","url":null,"abstract":"On his most recent solo album, Winter Wheat (2016), Winnipeg singer-songwriter John K Samson lingers in the liminal space between despair and hope, locating a fragile fecundity in the dormant growing season evoked by the album's title Winter Wheat voices a series of missed connections, unfinished stories, and interrupted conversations that cycle through many registers of despair before partially resolving into the tenuous hope that, as Samson writes in the title track (borrowing from Miriam Toews' novel A Complicated Kindness), \"this world is good enough, because it has to be\" Rather than advocating for complacency, Samson's songs perform a painful recounting of the past in order to imagine the troubled present as a time of tentative potential: though the world is not and has not been \"good enough\" as it is, still, to quote the title track, we must \"salute the ways we tried, [and] find a way to rise\" (\"Winter Wheat\") Though we may not know exactly \"what survival means\" (\"Confessions of a Futon Revolutionist,\" Fallow), to use the words of artist Jenny Holzer that Samson quotes in Winter Wheat's album liner epigraph, listening to, for, and with weak hope in Winter Wheat might model some collaborative \"way[s] to survive\" Many narrators on Winter Wheat struggle with a central agon that feels very contemporary: when action is likely futile, should we act anyway?
