Implemented in MATLAB's discrete event simulation tool, SimEvents, we demonstrate the methodology by generating two distinct use cases based on a distribution supply chain and manufacturing system.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115867776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This novel approach enables local time steps for equations describing time evolution of grid-based elements (fluids, fields) and macro-particles on arbitrary grids while preserving underlying conservation laws. The solution-adaptive integration ensures robustness (stability) and efficiency (speed) of complex nonlinear simulations. Using this technique we achieved a breakthrough in simulations of multiscale plasma systems. A new particle-in-cell simulation tool, HYPERS (Hybrid Particle Event-Resolved Simulator), which solves a set of strongly coupled Maxwell's equations, electron fluid equations and ion particle equations of motion, is presented as the first multi-dimensional application of this technology. We discuss its parallel implementation and demonstrate first results from three-dimensional simulations of compact plasma objects that have been out of reach of conventional codes. Potential applications of the new methodology to other scientific and engineering domains are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124357848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The classical job shop scheduling problem which is NP-Hard, has often been modelled as Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) model and solved using exact algorithms (for example, branch-and-bound and branch-and-cut) or using meta-heuristics (for example, Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization and Simulated Annealing). In the proposed Iterative Simulation-Optimization (ISO) approach, we use a modified formulation of the scheduling problem where the operational aspects of the job shop are captured only in the simulation model. Two new decision variables, controller delays and queue priorities are used to introduce feedback constraints, that help exchange information between the two models. The proposed method is tested using benchmark instances from the OR library. The results indicate that the method gives near optimal schedules in a reasonable computational time.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114754174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The challenge is to find a policy that maximizes the number of survivors and minimizes the total cost simultaneously under a set of resource and geographic constraints. We develop an agent-based discrete event simulation (ABDES) evacuation framework based on an embedded geographic information system (GIS) module to solve a network evacuation problem that involves multiple candidate shelters, multi-priorities evacuees and several vehicle types. The evacuation framework consists of three interacting components: a disaster scenario generator module, a GIS module for analyzing an evacuation network, and an ABDES module. We conduct experiments using the city of Galveston as an example. The evacuation framework offers insight to decision-makers about the number and location of shelters, allocation and assignment of evacuation vehicles, and distribution of relief resources that are required to complete a large-scale evacuation.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114740613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If a problem involves the flipping of coins or the rolling of dice, for example, analytic methods are generally employed. If a problem involves a complex series of queues with a nonstationary arrival stream, discrete-event simulation methods are generally employed. This tutorial considers problems that are near the boundary between analytic methods and simulation methods. We use the Maple-based APPL (A Probability Programming Language) to perform operations on random variables to address these problems. The problems considered are the infinite bootstrap, the probability distribution of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistic, the distribution of the time to complete a stochastic activity network, finding a lower bound on system reliability, Benford's law, finding the probability distribution and variance-covariance matrix of sojourn times in a queueing model, probability distribution relationships, testing random numbers, bivariate transformations, and autoregressive moving average time series models.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116356539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy simulation is an efficient way to examine the effects of occupancy on a building's energy consumption and a cost-effective and non-intrusive solution to test occupancy-based HVAC control strategies. However, more than one hundred building energy simulation programs are used in research and practice, and large discrepancies exist in simulated results when different simulation programs are used to model the same building under same conditions. This paper evaluates different methods and sequences of coupling occupancy information with building HVAC energy simulation. A systematic review is conducted to analyze five energy simulation programs, including DOE-2, EnergyPlus, IES-VE, ESP-r, and TRNSYS, from the following five perspectives of heat transfer and balance, load calculation, occupancy-HVAC system connection, HVAC system modeling, and HVAC system simulation process.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"51 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120881645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The metric used to evaluate it was the occupation time. In this study it was considered four different occupation scenarios of the bleachers characterizing ways to drive fans to their seats. The selected scenarios were: (1) random entry, (2) entry driven by a dispatchers, (3) numbered seats; (4) numbered seats with dispatcher. Building experiments using the simulation software SIMIO it was observed that the policy based on the dispatcher results in a shorter total occupation time. Additionally, the research analyzed factors that could make difference, such as physical feasibility to support the large number of people, as well as cultural aspects.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125877677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It uses an inter-disciplinary approach that includes modeling and simulation, high performance computing and statistical analysis to examine questions of interest with large number of alternatives. Data Farming allows for the examination of uncertain events with numerous possible outcomes and provides the capability of executing enough experiments so that both overall and unexpected results may be captured and examined for insights. In 2010, the NATO Science and Technology Organization started the three-year Task Group “Data Farming in Support of NATO” to assess and document the data farming methodology to be used for decision support. Two case studies were performed as proof-of-concept explorations to demonstrate the power of Data Farming. The paper describes the Data Farming methodology as an iterative process and summarizes the results of the case studies.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129685620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to build a production simulator for this type of FPD production line, an object-oriented event graph modeling approach is proposed where the FPD production line is simplified into a job shop consisting of two types of inline cells, and the job shop is represented as an object-oriented event graph model. This type of job shop is referred to as a heterogeneous job shop. The resulting model is realized in a production simulator using an object-oriented event graph simulator and is illustrated with the experimental results from the production simulator.","PeriodicalId":446873,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2014","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128693769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
