The developed porous structure with the thickness of polymer walls in the range of a few microns and a high content of primary amino groups determined the high sorption capacity of the sorbents toward Alizarin Red in a broad pH range (2–8). Due to the cross-linking via hydroxyl groups of the chitosan, the static sorption capacity of the fabricated materials was higher than that of chitosan flakes, even for sorbents cross-linked at EGDGE:NH 2 -chitosan with molar ratio 2:1. The monolith sorbents were mechanically stable and supported flow rates up to 300 bed volumes per hour. The breakthrough curve of Alizarin Red sorption showed that the effective dynamic sorption capacity was 283 mg/g, and 100% of the dye could be removed from the solutions with concentration of 100 mg/L. The monoliths can be regenerated with 0.3s M NaOH solution and used in several consecutive cycles of sorption/regeneration without loss of efficacy.","PeriodicalId":44461,"journal":{"name":"Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2019-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42266973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thermodynamic function, i.e., surface free energy, of those systems was determined based on the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) approach. This parameter seems to be essential in determination of cell adhesion to polymeric materials and molecular interactions with living tissues. The obtained results show that the wettability and surface free energy of PEEK can be changed depending on the composition of the coating.","PeriodicalId":44461,"journal":{"name":"Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2019-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42609439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chitin and chitosan were isolated following demineralization, deproteinization, decolouration (raw chitin), and deacetylation (chitosan). After boiling, drying, and grinding, 62.12% of the ground shell was obtained. A yield of 40.92% was obtained after demineralization of ground crab shell, while after the deproteinization process 8.74% was obtained. After decolourization, 8.27% of raw chitin was obtained, and the final amount of chitosan extracted from the crab shells was approximately 5.89%. We also characterized the isolated chitin by determining its physicochemical properties using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). the of chitin. During the fourth step, we observed the biggest mass loss rate (24.8%). The mass loss observed at this was due to the decomposition of calcite in the collagen calcite. These results show the good thermal stability of the extracted chitin.","PeriodicalId":44461,"journal":{"name":"Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2019-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46295789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, alkaline reflux occurs in the case when alkaline intestinal contents enter the esophagus. The aim of the study was to examine the pharmaceutical properties of gels for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux, covering the mucosa, allowing prolonged contact with the esophageal mucosa. Formulations containing the PVP K-30 showed the lowest pH, which is an important feature and can be used in the treatment of advanced alkaline reflux. Gels containing PVP K-90 and chitosan can be used in the treatment of acid reflux. The addition of chitosan significantly increased the dynamic viscosity of the tested gels. The study of the work of adhesion showed the effect of PVP K-30 and PVP K-90 and their concentration on the value of the work of adhesion. The presented studies have shown that it is possible to obtain gels with high adhesion to the esophageal mucous membrane.","PeriodicalId":44461,"journal":{"name":"Progress on Chemistry and Application of Chitin and its Derivatives","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2019-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67092219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
