Given a set of arrivals, with pre-determined meter fix assignments and estimated times of arrival (ETA), the algorithm determines runway assignments and preferred sequences and schedules at the fixes and at the assigned runways. Separation constraints are imposed at all the fixes and, again, for wake vortex purposes, at the runways. The algorithm uses an optimization-based approach which can be configured to represent a variety of objective functions and levels of automation. In addition, the algorithm can be configured to emulate the center TRACON automation system (CTAS) traffic management advisor (TMA) tool developed by NASA","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129117076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to provide a complete INS solution (i.e., attitude, velocity, position, and biases), an extended Kalman filter algorithm is developed and implemented in real-time. A devised control strategy utilizes multiple PID loops with a hierarchy enabling simple attitude stabilization to full waypoint navigation. The developed ground station unit, a laptop computer, communicates with the avionics package via 802.11b WiFi, displays the aircraft critical information, provides in-flight PID gain tunings, and uploads waypoints, through a simple GUI. The system is installed in an off-the-shelf delta-wing R/C aircraft and demonstrates its performance for aerial robotic applications","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132190746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One such consideration is a modification of the standard air traffic control team configuration to include a \"multi-sector planner\" (MSP) position. This MSP position has been investigated in several research and field studies, both in the U.S. and in Europe. The feasibility and effectiveness of two of these concepts were investigated in the current study. One concept, termed \"Multi-D\", took the traditional role of a data-controller but provided these types of services to several radar controllers instead of one. In the second configuration, termed \"area flow\", the MSP coordinated with neighboring MSP areas and attempted to manage the overall traffic flows and actively balanced sector traffic levels within their area of responsibility. The experiment consisted of a pair of one-week human-in-the-loop studies, in which each MSP concept (i.e. multi-D and area flow) was tested separately with a different 5-person team. A baseline condition, which assumed traditional radar and data-controller teams with access to advanced decision support tools (DSTs) and automation, was also run each week to provide comparison data. Overall, data suggest feasibility of both concepts, with many similarities and some differences. Both configurations emphasize strategic traffic management and neither safety nor efficiency appeared to be adversely affected. Workload data supported an assumption that a single MSP can cover multiple sector positions with a better overall workload distribution. The coordination data revealed that both multi-D and area flow delegated a significant portion of their rerouting tasks to the upstream sectors since strategic traffic planning needed to occur well before the test sectors. The viability of requesting these reroutes to the upstream sectors needs to be verified in future studies. The MSP study was sponsored by FAA ATO Operations Planning and led by Kevin Corker at San Jose State University","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133009505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Important issues in designing a GCS concern the automation, autonomy and authority of operator support functions. The research described in this paper focuses on the design and evaluation of both operator support functions that act in the time-critical domain and the graphical user interface of the GCS. The operator support functions are based on the current airborne collision avoidance system and terrain awareness warning system. Those algorithms have been extended to enable autonomous function execution. The evaluation has been done in two experiments. The objective of the first experiment was to explore the influence of the level of authority (LoA) assigned to the system on operator situational awareness (SA) and performance. The results of Experiment 1 showed no influence of LoA on operator SA and performance. Possibly, no differences between the LoAs were found, because user interventions occurred most often in the tactical time domain, whereas the autonomous functions operate in the time-critical domain. However, although participants had enough level 3 SA (projection of current state into the future) to timely detect conflicts, they often did not come up with a good solution for them. In these cases, the solution to one conflict directly caused a new conflict. It also occurred that participants misjudged a safe situation as an upcoming conflict, intervening when this was not necessary. In order to better support operator SA, the GCS displays were redesigned. A second experiment was conducted, investigating the effect of the modified displays and the influence of LoA on operator SA and performance. The results of this experiment showed no significant influence of LoA. With the modified displays, only one unnecessary intervention occurred, and not one solution to a conflict caused a new conflict. This led to the conclusion that the modified display design provided the participants with better terrain awareness (level 2 SA) and better level 3 SA in the vertical dimension","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116527909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The route structure of the procedures was designed to enable diverging departure operations that distribute departure traffic flows over a wider area of DFW's terminal airspace. Operational changes associated with the implementation were found to result in more efficient utilization of available runways and constrained airspace around the airport. This paper documents the results of comprehensive evaluations of observed operational changes. It reviews the design of the departure procedures and evaluates dependencies between DFW's two general implementation objectives of (1) realizing departure efficiency benefits while (2) maintaining the distance flown in terminal airspace. This paper describes the analysis methodology developed to evaluate operational changes using radar data. It presents pre- and post-implementation comparisons of benefit metrics characterizing the distance departing aircraft fly in terminal airspace and the continuity of observed departure climbs. The results show that DFW's gains in departure efficiency were realized without significantly impacting the flight distance and climb continuity of departure operations in DFW's terminal airspace","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123520260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this effort at Boeing is to define a significant achievable step improvement in the efficiency, capacity and affordability of the air traffic system for the 2008-2012 timeframe, while also enabling transition to the US next generation air traffic system (NGATS). The concept attempts to take maximum advantage of existing ground technologies and functionality. In addition, it leverages airborne navigational capability that already exists on most commercial production airplanes and many in-service airplanes. Consequently the concept is expected to require only modest changes to airplane systems and ground infrastructure.
