This paper presents a simulation model of a 12-pulse DVR using photovoltaic as a means of providing an alternative energy source for the DVR. For the development of DVR model, two models were considered by using user-defined model and existing component model. To achieve stable characteristic of the DVR, a feedback control loop is employed so as to achieve a faster response in sag detection and mitigation capability. Simulations were carried out using the PSCAD/EMTDC electromagnetic transient program to validate the capabilities of the photovoltaic-based DVR in performing voltage sag mitigation. Simulation results proved the capability of the photovoltaic-based DVR in mitigating voltage sag in a distribution system.","PeriodicalId":443652,"journal":{"name":"2007 5th Student Conference on Research and Development","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116877619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several rubber tree leaf diseases are been studied for digital RGB color extraction where three sets of rubber tree leaf diseases image are digitally captured under standard and control environment. The identified regions of interest (ROI) of these diseases images are then processed to quantify the normalized indices from the RGB color distribution. This system involved the process of image classification by using artificial neural network where 600 samples were used as training while another 200 samples were for testing. The optimized ANN model in this work has two method which based only on the dominant pixel RGB (mean) and applying principle component analysis (PCA) on the pixel gradation values of each image. The optimized model was evaluated and validated through analysis of the performance indicators. Findings in this work have shown that both models have produced about 70% in diagnostic accuracy with more than 80% achievement for sensitivity. However, model with the applied PCA has lower network size.","PeriodicalId":443652,"journal":{"name":"2007 5th Student Conference on Research and Development","volume":"408 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122109713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, Pusat Tenaga Malaysia through its Malaysian Building Integrated Photovoltaics (MBIPV) programme has recently launched the Solar1000 bidding to encourage PV usage at households. However, photovoltaics are still expensive as it is rather a new technology in Malaysia. The development of PV system is also expensive with expensive facilities required to fabricate solar cells. To save development cost, PV system can also be modelled using PSPICE. Given that PSPICE is a common simulation software among electrical engineering students, it is useful to be able to use it as a simulation tool. This paper demonstrates the simulation of a PV system. One of the two types of photovoltaic, which is a standalone system, will be focused on in this paper. Standalone PV systems are the most popular systems used worldwide despite the more recent interest of the market in grid-connected systems. A standalone PV system should provide enough energy to a totally mains-isolated application. This paper discusses common PV features such as peak solar hour (PSH) concept, loss of load probability (LLP) and long term plus system level simulation of a standalone PV system modeled and simulated using PSPICE.","PeriodicalId":443652,"journal":{"name":"2007 5th Student Conference on Research and Development","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117261486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A vast amount of its data have been recorded which allows various lightning-related studies to be conducted. This paper presents the application of artificial neural network (ANN) in predicting the occurrence of lightning events based on historical lightning and meteorological data. ANN, which was inspired by the way biological nervous systems process information, is utilized in this study due to its strong pattern recognition capabilities; implemented through learning patterns and relationships in data. A two layer back-propagation neural network has been developed to predict the occurrence of lightning at least four hours prior to its arrival. Several network structures, training algorithms and activation functions have been rigorously tested in order to obtain the most suitable network with high accuracy and convergence capability, while the perfection of the developed network was conducted through postprocessing, indicated by the closeness of correlation coefficient to unity. The computation burden experienced in this study in achieving the converged solution has been alleviated by the introduction of indicator module to the original features of the training and testing patterns.","PeriodicalId":443652,"journal":{"name":"2007 5th Student Conference on Research and Development","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117305010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For size grading, the fruit is weighed manually hence the practice is tedious, time consuming and labor intensive. Therefore, this paper will discuss the development of a computer vision system for papaya size grading using shape characteristic analysis. The methodology involves data acquisition to collect the images and their weights. The RGB images were converted to binary images using automatic thresholding based on the Otsu method. Some morphological procedures were involved for image enhancement to distinguish the papaya object from the background. Then the shape characteristics consisting of area, mean diameter and perimeter were extracted from the papaya images. We classified according to combinations of the three features to study the uniqueness of the extracted features. Each combination was fed separately to a neural network for training and testing. The proposed technique showed the ability to perform papaya size classification with more than 94% accuracy in this research.","PeriodicalId":443652,"journal":{"name":"2007 5th Student Conference on Research and Development","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125057496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
