Although there have been no follow-up studies to Nash’s research, he has stirred the interest created by Charles Nordhoff and James Hall in their Bounty trilogy, the account of the actual mutiny in 1789 and its aftermath. As an echo of the dramatic ways in which the lives of the Bounty crew changed, Nash explores the changes that took place in language as the descendants of Alex Smith and Ned Young, mutineers who survived the bloodletting, moved from Pitcairn Island to Norfolk Island. A revision of his doctoral thesis at the University of Adelaide (2001), the book consists of 123 pages plus a remarkable section of 162 pages containing lists of placenames from the two Australian island environments that provided the setting for his research. The choice of Norfolk Island in the southwestern Pacific—an archipelago consisting of three islands, Norfolk, Nepean, and Philip—and Dudley Peninsula at the eastern end of Kangaroo Island, off the coast of mainland South Australia, meets the author’s goal to map the toponymic features of insular environments. This is an ambitious task to accomplish in places where the boundary between insider and outsider may not be easy to cross, and in fact, in Nash’s own words, “[a]s a rank outsider it took time to gain trust and establish friendship with knowledgeable people” (38). Not surprisingly, then, from the very beginning, throughout the eight chapters into which the book is divided, Nash points to the relevance of his fully immersive or “ethnographic” experience on Norfolk Island. Being able to establish connections with the islanders and to share with them both the personal and the work-related spheres of their everyday lives played a crucial role in his research. It is thanks to the long stretches of time spent on the islands (especially in Norfolk) and to the ties established that, as it may be expected when fieldwork is at stake, he was able to observe interactions between participants, interview people, and gain access to very useful primary and secondary sources. From this standpoint, the story and the implications of his meeting with the 84-year-old Norfolk Islander Bev McCoy are emblematic:","PeriodicalId":44254,"journal":{"name":"Names-A Journal of Onomastics","volume":"68 1","pages":"46 - 48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00277738.2020.1735811","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47954469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing upon six opening addresses from three high-profile trials, the study analyzes the forms, functions, and frequency of names that lawyers use to refer to defendants and victims in their narratives. The quantitative and qualitative analysis reveals that the prosecution and the defense differ starkly in how they use names to construct the identities of the characters. Such systematic differences contribute to ascribing polarized identities to the characters, which in effect negotiates reality by (de)legitimizing guilt and responsibility claims and mediating jurors’ perceptions.","PeriodicalId":44254,"journal":{"name":"Names-A Journal of Onomastics","volume":"67 1","pages":"185 - 198"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00277738.2018.1490515","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42545216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nick enjoys a well-deserved reputation for her meticulous scholarship and her ability to engage in interdisciplinary research. Her impeccable credentials are precisely what this massive and very significant project required. She holds a Ph.D. in English linguistics from the University of Freiburg, and an MA in German linguistics (University of Washington, Seattle), a BA in Germanic languages and literature (University of Maryland), a BSc in clinical and social psychology (University of Maryland), an MSc in forensic and investigative psychology (University of Liverpool), all with university and departmental honors. Finally, she was awarded the prestigious German post-doctoral degree of “Habilitation” for her research in English linguistics (University of Cologne), which represents the highest level of scholarly achievement in Germany. In her “Preface” (2019: ix-xix), Dr. Nick discusses her visit with her mother to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on its opening day (April 22, 1993) and their profoundly personal reactions to its historical significance. It is located on 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW in Washington, DC. Its street address pays homage to the Swedish architect, businessman, diplomat, and humanitarian who saved thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary. He disappeared on January 17, 1945 and was reported to have died on July 17, 1947 in the Lubyanka prison in Moscow. Dr. Nick states that the purpose of this book is “an exploration of names and naming immediately before, during and after the Holocaust” (xiii). Early in her research on names, Nazis, and the Holocaust, she decided not to approach her task from a statistical analytical perspective. Dr. Nick points out that this decision derived from “my profound respect and concern for the millions of people who had their identities and names stolen and replaced with serial digits during the Holocaust. It is also out of profound respect and concern for the people today whose lives have been, are, or will be threatened by a different genocide” (xiii). As a result, Dr. Nick sought to tell the stories of the people behind the names. As she observes, “the namestories shared here are embedded within a historical examination of naming laws, policies, and practices that were significant for the preparation and execution of the atrocities perpetrated during the Holocaust. In addition, this work examines the ways in which similar naming practices have been used in several contemporary genocides” (xiv). In her Acknowledgments section (xxi), Dr. Nick points out that:","PeriodicalId":44254,"journal":{"name":"Names-A Journal of Onomastics","volume":"67 1","pages":"231 - 235"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00277738.2019.1677051","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45256014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It looks at how core area newspapers and other critics have deprecated the rural aspect of these peripherals, leading rural residents in some states to argue against further use of the informal name. Peter Raper’s original lexicon was published in 1987 as the Dictionary of South African Place Names, with its second incarnation following soon afterwards as the New Dictionary of South African Place Names (1989). The production of the revised and updated third edition, with the same title, was in part “necessitated by the election of 1994 and the increase in the number of provinces from four to nine” (2004, vii). The subsequent need for this new fourth edition has been driven particularly by the ongoing changes to place names that were made possible by South African Geographical Names Council Act (1998). This has seen the standardization of a significant number of new names (2014, viii). The State Information Technology Agency has developed the database and archival system for these names, which was formally approved by the Department of Arts and Culture in 2002. The introduction to the third edition of the Dictionary noted the establishment of SAGNC as the national authority responsible for geographical names (2004, x), but the organization was at an early stage of its work in 2004. As the authors of the fourth edition helpfully explain: “New place names, and proposals for changes or revisions of names, are submitted to the SAGNC and to the Provincial Geographical Names Committees. On their recommendation names approved by the Minister of Arts and Culture are published in the Government Gazette” (2014, xi). Language, names, culture, and perceptions continue to evolve, and the fourth edition therefore provides a timely reflection of names in South Africa following many of these changes, with the inclusion of new entries and the revision of information about revised or altered names. The title of the fourth edition has also been revised to better reflect the geographical coverage, which, just like the third edition, includes “names of major features in neighbouring countries” (2014, vii). However, the authors note that since their remit was not to be inclusive of all southern countries in Africa, “[t]here has been no attempt at comprehensiveness” (2014, vii). The precision of the geographical references has also been revised for the fourth edition, with names given “latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes and seconds, and the GPS coordinates following [where available] the style of the Surveyor-General of South Africa” (2014, xxiii). The authors credit sources such as GeoHack and Maplandia for further data not available from the SurveyorGeneral (2014, xxiv). The convention that “[o]fficially approved names are preceded with an asterisk” (2004, xviii) has been dropped for the fourth edition. Reasons for this are not clearly stated, but the preface notes that “the implementation","PeriodicalId":44254,"journal":{"name":"Names-A Journal of Onomastics","volume":"67 1","pages":"236 - 238"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00277738.2019.1677052","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48367035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What Dylan, Prince, Elvis, and Mozart, Armstrong, Sinatra, Beethoven, and Lennon were to music, so were Trudgill, Svartvik, Quirk, Pyles, Leech, Greenbaum, Crystal, and Algeo to English linguistics. As university students, it was somehow beyond imagination that behind these surnames were real people, with real goals and dreams, challenges and defeats, lives and deaths. As university faculty, the scholarly legacy of these academics was as inspirational as it was awe-inspiring. I myself first came across Algeo’s work in my introductory classes in English linguistics. Required readings like The Origins and Development of the English Language (ISBN-10: 015507055X) not only introduced me — as well as countless others around the world —to the maddening yet magnificent processes that led to the formation of the English language today. They also gave delightfully tantalizing clues to the wondrous number of geographical, temporal, and social permutations it might take tomorrow. A few years later, as a graduate student in search of a dissertation topic, I stumbled across the book On Defining the Proper Name. I still remember how excited I was to learn that there was an entire branch of linguistics devoted to the study of names and naming. I had found my research topic. I wanted to study this history of official names used by the US Census for US American residents of African descent. That initial enthusiasm did not last long. My doctoral supervisor told me that onomastics was neither a serious nor a legitimate pursuit for a linguist. I still remember my profound feelings of frustration and confusion. How could it be that names, a linguistic phenomenon so seminal to every form of communication, had been resolutely relegated to the periphery of linguistic research? It was shortly thereafter that I made another discovery that steeled my resolve to stick to my original idea for my doctoral dissertation. The article that had such a profound affect upon me was published in a journal called NAMES. The article was “Is a Theory of Names Possible?” by John Algeo—the very same John Algeo whose textbooks were at the very center of","PeriodicalId":44254,"journal":{"name":"Names-A Journal of Onomastics","volume":"67 1","pages":"245 - 248"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00277738.2019.1692771","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43215477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
