Many national approaches to promoting Internet development have been taken since the 1990s. How have those strategic and regulatory developments impacted on broadband Internet access? To answer this question, this research investigates the relationships between policy and broadband access by developing a research model. The research findings in this study suggest the relationships between the elements of policy and broadband access and indicate how the various policy aspects interplay to affect broadband access. The research model contributes a different approach towards studying government 'policy-in-use' and understanding 'actual effects' of various government policies with regards to broadband Internet access, rather than examining the linkage between policy goals and means. The research demonstrates that government policies governing the telecommunications service market and promoting information infrastructure have a significant impact on Internet access. The research findings provide insights into the regulatory outcome and the effectiveness of national approaches, which would be helpful to inform and improve the current practice in Australia. As a single case study, the research can not be used to generalize beyond Australian experience with Internet development. The innovative concept developed is the \"diffusion -price\" model, an alternative long term estimation of price and diffusion elasticity, at the same time. It corresponds to the simultaneous estimation of the mutual influence of the product's price over its expected diffusion and vise versa. The discrete parts of the methodology arc the use of a diffusion model for the initial estimation of diffusion, the construction of a price index function for estimating the pricing mechanism and, finally, the construction of a \"diffusion-price\" model for estimating and adjusting the diffusion level and price quantities. The evaluation process whose solution was based on genetic algorithms, revealed remarkable results which can be used for business strategies development, as the pricing policy is able to make diffusion diverge substantially from the initial estimates. When looking at current mobile networks, they have mainly been designed for optimized delivery of voice calls and not for broadband data. Although mobile networks are evolving, we expect there to be a need for complementary solutions for providing wireless Internet access. Thus we introduce an ad-hoc networking solution using WiFi short range radio technology for extending cellular wireless broadband coverage and capacity into places where it is most urgently needed; densely populated areas and indoors. We further propose connecting the ad-hoc networking solution to the operator's total access offering. As a result, wireless users may enjoy an easy to use, good quality, secure and robust service offering when entering the wireless Internet era, and access providers are equipped with tools to utilize complementary access technologies in places where they suit best. Operators arc able to make efficient use of their existing investments and open new service concepts and business models with mobile Internet domain use cases evolution. While the prospect of combining the services provided by the Internet with seamless mobile access has raised much expectations, mobile Internet or mobile data services have not yet been adopted by the masses in a large scale. Despite the obvious interest on the topic, there has not been much accurate information on the market-wide adoption dynamics of mobile data services. The adoption of mobile data in Finland during 2005-2006 was studied in this research. Data on 80-90% of Finnish mobile subscribers and terminals was collected from mobile operators' charging-orientcd reporting systems in 2005 and 2006. The obtained results show that a major renewal has taken place in the Finnish mobile terminal installed base in 2005-2006 and the total data traffic volume in mobile networks has multiplied. However, the growth does primarily not result from increase in the number of users, whereas average traffic volume per user accounts for most of the growth in traffic volumes. Thus, it seems that the existing mobile data users have acquired more capable terminals and upgraded to relatively cheaper data tariff schemes enabling higher volume data usage. Since India has the third largest mobile subscriber base in the world, it is important to study the factors that affect the growth of mobile telecom services in the country. It is the objective of this study to determine the effect of different techno-economic variables on the growth of mobile services in India. The demographic, economic and market variables vary widely across regions of developing country such as India. Though a number of cross-country studies exist, this is one of first attempts to study the inter-regional growth of mobile services across service areas of a country with an evolving telecom market. We model the growth of mobile services using technology diffusion framework, incorporating other variables that impact growth. Our analysis of panel data using the model indicates that competition and network effects arc the factors that drive growth of mobile services in India.
